For the first time in its history, Sports Illustrated will feature a transgender model in its annual Swimsuit Edition.Sports Illustrated said Friday that 23-year-old Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio would be featured in the magazine, which is slated for a July 21 release. In an open letter published on Sports Illustrated's website, Sampaio said she was "excited and honored" to be a part of the upcoming issue."Being trans usually means facing closed doors to peoples’ hearts and minds," she wrote. "We face snickers, insults, fearful reactions and physical violations just for existing. Our options for growing up in a loving and accepting family, having a fruitful experience at school or finding dignified work are unimaginably limited and challenging.""I recognize that I am one of the fortunate ones, and my intention is to honor that as best I can."According to NBC, the Swimsuit Edition is just the latest barrier Sampaio has smashed as a transgender model. Last year, she was hired as the first openly trans Victoria's Secret model, and she was the first openly trans model to appear on the cover of any Vogue magazine."Valentina has been on our radar for some time now and when we finally met face-to-face it became apparent that besides her obvious beauty, she is an impassioned activist, a true pioneer for the LGBT+ community and just simply embodies the well-rounded woman we are proud to have represent SI Swimsuit across our platforms," Sports Illustrated said in a statement to NBC.In 2019, Sports Illustrated featured a Muslim model, Halima Aden, in the Swimsuit Edition. Aden sported a hijab and a burkini in her photo shoot. 1653

Following the Associated Press calling the presidential race for Democrat Joe Biden, statements of support from previous presidents calling for unity and congratulations were shared.President Barack Obama, who Biden served as Vice President between 2009-2017, started by saying how proud he was to congratulate Biden, his wife Jill, running mate Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.“I know he’ll do the job with the best interests of every American at heart, whether or not he had their vote. So I encourage every American to give him a chance and lend him your support,” Obama’s statement reads. “The election results at every level show that the country remains deeply and bitterly divided. It will be up to not just Joe and Kamala, but each of us, to do our part - to reach out beyond our comfort zone, to listen to others, to lower the temperature and find some common ground from which to move forward, all of us remembering that we are one nation, under God.”Obama also thanked everyone who voted and got involved this election cycle, and urged all Americans to stay engaged in civic issues.President Bill Clinton tweeted his support, saying “America has spoken and democracy has won.” He also touched on healing a divided nation, saying “Now we have a President-Elect and Vice President-Elect who will serve all of us and bring us all together.”President Jimmy Carter said he and his wife Rosalynn are “proud” of the Democrats’ “well-run campaign and seeing the positive change they bring to our nation.” Carter served one term as president, from 1977-1981, while Biden was a young senator from Delaware. For anyone who is still deciding whether to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, there's an interactive map created by a team of researchers that can help with that decision. The interactive map, created by professors at the Georgia Institute of Technology, shows the likelihood that at least one person would test positive for COVID-19 when gathering with a group of 10 or more people in a given area. The map includes data for every U.S. county and shows the risk for infection using data of recent COVID-19 cases across the country. The data depends on the size and location of the gathering. For example, for a gathering of people in Fayette County, Kentucky, the likelihood that at least one person would test positive for COVID-19 is:28% for a group of 10 people39% for a group of 15 people48% for a group of 20 people56% for a group of 25 people81% for s group of 50 people.Nearly 40% of people say they will likely attend a Thanksgiving gathering with 10 or more people despite the risk of catching COVID-19, according to a recent survey by Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.Another survey of parents nationwide found nearly a third say the benefits of gathering with extended family for the holidays are worth the risk of spreading or getting the coronavirus. The survey, conducted by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in partnership with the University of Michigan, says almost 3-in-5 plan to see extended family in person.Experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year. They recommend hosting a virtual gathering, if possible, to avoid another spike in cases. To use the Georgia Institute of Technology's map, click here. This story was originally published by Jordan Mickle on WLEX in Lexington, Kentucky. 1863

For millions of Americans, the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic could be starting to take shape. Late last week, a 0 per week unemployment supplement expired. Also funding from the Paycheck Protection Program has long been depleted. The program was implemented to help employers make payroll during the pandemic. In addition, data released last week indicated the US GDP declined by one-third in the second quarter of 2020.While Congressional Democrats, Senate Republicans and the White House are largely in agreement on the need for a stimulus, agreeing to a framework remains in question. The two sides are at odds over how much of unemployment should be supplemented by the federal government. There is also a debate on offering businesses liability protection from coronavirus-related lawsuits.“Today we have an emergency,” Pelosi said. “A building is on fire and they're deciding how much water they want to have in the bucket. This is very important. Millions of people could've fallen into poverty without the 600 dollars. They're so fussy about any anecdotal information they might have about somebody not going to work because they make six hundred dollars on this, but so cavalier about big money going to companies that shouldn't really be having it."Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met with Congressional leaders on Saturday."There's clearly a subset of issues where we both agree on very much,” Mnuchin said. “We're very interested in extending un-enhanced unemployment insurance, we're very interested in schools, we're very interested in jobs. I think as you know, as the Leader (Mitch) McConnell has said, liability insurance is very important to us. So there's definitely the PPP, there's a lot of bipartisan support." 1759

Flu shot signs have been displayed in several stores for weeks. But is it too early to get the shot?Nikki Price, director of pharmacy operations at Safeway grocery stores, says they’ve been offering the flu vaccine to customers for nearly two weeks now.In fact, Price says the vaccine is available around this time of year, every year. However, with flu season peaking in January, Price admits it’s still pretty early on in the season. So, does getting the shot early have benefits? We asked a doctor.“If you're over the age of 65, I don't recommend getting the flu shot right now,” says Dr. Lela Mansoori, with Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. “I would recommend waiting until after September.”Dr. Mansoori says that's because the elderly, and babies under 6 months old, don’t have as strong an immune response to the vaccine, compared to younger people.“The protective effects imparted by the vaccine may not actually last as long and carry them out throughout the entire flu season,” says Dr. Mansoori. If you're under 65 years old, Dr. Mansoori says getting your flu vaccine now won't make much of a difference, because the vaccine should cover you all year. But no matter when you get the shot, just make sure you get it.“The flu shot will protect not only you, but your parents, your grandparents, your children, and it can prevent death,” says Dr. Mansoori. “So, I think it's very important to get the flu vaccine.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting your flu shot by the end of October. 1542
