SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman says she was the victim of a violent attack inside her hotel room at the high-end Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.In an exclusive interview with 10News, Jacquee Renna is accusing the front desk staff of handing out her room number and a key without her permission. The hotel is staying tight-lipped with 10News about the apparent security breach, but it's giving details to the courts."I haven't felt safe since then," Renna tells Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner. "Suddenly, I heard the door kind of jiggle and I thought [room service] was coming to get our plates," she explains. She and her boyfriend were finishing dinner inside their hotel room when she says her ex-husband was able to unlock the door and break through the security latch."I saw the key in his hands so he had the key," she tells us. "He threw me over onto the bed. I could see rage in his face."Court documents claim her ex-husband punched her boyfriend in the face, dragged him at least twenty feet and kicked him in the head. Renna says her ex-husband then ran out to the parking lot, where he apparently slashed her boyfriend's tires, before leaving."[My boyfriend] had bruises and scrapes. I think we were both really in shock," she says. "The Omni has a responsibility to provide safe and secure rooms to their guests," says her attorney, Robert Fitzpatrick. He's helping her sue the hotel chain for negligence.Renna says that after the attack, the hotel manager apologized to her and said the hotel's front desk person had given the key to her ex-husband. Fitzpatrick adds, "Omni should never have given a key to the hotel room and they should have not disclosed the hotel room number."Hotel room attacks are uncommon but have made headlines in Southern California.Earlier this year, Covina police say security video caught a pastor lurking outside a Los Angeles hotel room, touching himself as he watched two girls who were alone inside. Officers report he later forced his way into the room and assaulted an 11-year-old. He was charged, but has pleaded "not guilty".Disturbing 2014 security video out of Kern County captured a front desk worker handing a room key to a man accused of posing as a female guest's boyfriend, before he reportedly fumbled with the room's peep hole, went inside, and sexually assaulted the woman while she was sleeping. He's seen running out with his pants around his ankles. He was convicted and a jury found that the hotel was partially responsible for the assault.It begs the question, who is responsible for making sure hotels in San Diego are keeping guests safe? To get answers, Team10 spoke to the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association, the San Diego Tourism Authority, local hotel negligence attorneys and private security professionals. None of them knew of any local, state or federal authority that has oversight. Hotels are left to police themselves. The Omni Hotel chain denied our request for an interview to discuss the new lawsuit, citing that it doesn't talk about pending litigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stolen cello worth 0,000 has been reunited with its owner. "I was driving home from downtown and I saw it. It was on C and 7th where the mailbox is at and I thought, well this is really weird. And then I got out and I knew what it was right away, so I took it," said Tony Cozano, who found the instrument. The instrument was returned to its owner, John Walz Monday. Walz is the principal cellist for the Los Angeles Opera and has played on more than 1,500 film scores from Titanic to Indiana Jones, even the new Star Wars films. RELATED: Police searching for person who reportedly stole 0,000 cello"I walked in to the house and just burst into tears. It's in perfect shape. There's no damage to it. Happy ending," said Walz in describing being reunited with the instrument. According to police, the cello was stolen on August 8 between 8 and 10 p.m. at the Town and Country Hotel on the 500 block of Hotel Circle North. In a news release, police said someone broke into the hotel room when Walz was away and stole several items. The cello was made by Mario Miralles and is valued at 0,000.  1174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A South Bay homeowner contacted Team 10, saying his homeowner’s association towed his car even though he has parked in the same spot for years.Cecilio Nazareno has lived in the Rolling Hills Ranch community since 2005. “It’s a nice neighborhood,” Nazareno said.He has never had any problems with his HOA until recently. Navarro went on vacation with his wife late last year for a couple weeks.He parked his car in front of his home, but when he returned it was gone. “We were shocked because my car… was missing,” Nazareno said.He thought it was stolen, but when he contacted property management, someone told him it was towed. “The person that I talked to knew it was my car. [He] said we towed your car because it was abandoned,” Nazareno said.The bill was more than 0. “It’s a lot of money for me, especially being retired,” the military veteran said.Navarro said there were two warnings on his windshield, but he obviously did not see it since he was out of the country. “Give us time to correct it. While you're on vacation and your car is parked, you don't have time,” Nazareno said.Team 10 contacted the property management company and got a response from Rolling Hills Ranch Community Association. General Manager Haley Murphy cited a rule that said certain vehicles cannot “remain parked on any street adjacent to the Property for more than twenty-four (24) continuous hours.”However, Team 10 found the rule was for oversized vehicles, not regular sized cars.Murphy then pointed out a different rule: “Any vehicles which would be considered abandoned over 72 hours are subject to regulations… and vehicles that can’t be driven must be kept in the garage or removed.” “I said, how can you say abandoned? I used that car and parked here since 2005,” Nazareno said.“When I was in the military I would leave it here for weeks on out.” Team 10 asked why Navarro was being towed now.Murphy would not answer that specific question, but cited yet another rule that said: “Any vehicle parked for more than 72 hours in the same space is subject to tow with no further notice.” Murphy said that because he lives in “the gated section of the community with private streets,” there are additional restrictions on parking. Nazareno said he, along with several of his neighbors, have never seen this rule.Attorney Dan Zimberoff is not affiliated with the case, but sees a lot of issues similar to Nazareno’s situation. “It’s really the three P’s you see a lot. Pets, poop, and parking,” Zimberoff said.He said it is in the interest of both sides to resolve issues before it goes to court. One way is mediation. There are both formal and informal processes.Nazareno no longer has the car, but still hopes for his money back. “For those board members and for those managers that are out there that spend a lot of time trying to get that homeowner, really, if they spent half the resources and the time on trying to build community, then everyone would be in a better position,” Zimberoff said.Murphy would not give Team 10 the total number of vehicles towed, but wrote “the Association has always employed a security company to monitor common area property and perform parking enforcement.”For more information and assistance with HOAs click here.  3276

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 70 members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team in San Diego helped in the recovery effort after 9/11. Wednesday, they remembered the tragedy and reflected on how firefighting has changed in years since.On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked two planes and flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Nearly 3,000 lives were taken. The work that followed days later brought in crews from around the country."On the pile is even more daunting than being off of it and figuring out where you've been and where you've looked and where's the potential to find someone who might still be alive," Battalion Chief Matt Nilsen said.Nilsen was sent to New York to set up communications, using his mechanical engineering degree. He returned to the West Coast with an unforgettable experience."Everybody wanted to do something to help and I was fortunate to have a job that was doing that," Nilsen said. Back home, he said firefighting has changed."It used to be a big thing that the dirtier your gear is, the saltier you are. Now it's the cleaner your gear are, is the smarter way to be," he said. In the years since the attack, the team focuses more on cancer prevention and how their gear plays an important role in that focus."When we go to a structure fire, when we go there, when we went to the World Trade Center, in all those circumstances you get exposed and once you have it on your body, it's the prolonged exposure that can contribute more to it," Nilsen said, speaking of the toxins that firefighters face on the job.While the phrase "We Will Never Forget" is tied to the historic date, 18 years later there are many who don't know or understand the impact of 9/11, like those who were in New York."We do need to remember the lessons from this, and remember how we came together as a country after this attack," Nilsen said. 1889
