CALEXICO (CNS) - The federal government today broke ground on the first border wall replacement project awarded under President Donald Trump.Customs and Border Protection is replacing a 2.25-mile section of border fencing constructed in the 1990s using scrap metal with a 30-foot-high bollard-style wall just south of downtown Calexico. CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego.Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president.The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible.In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points.The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego.The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. CAMPO (CNS) - At least one person was fatally injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening on Route 94 in Campo, according to the California Highway Patrol.The crash took place on Route 94 -- Campo Road -- at the intersection with Sheridan Road about 7 p.m., the CHP reported.The person's name was withheld pending family notification. There's no word yet on the gender or age of the victim. No information on other injuries was immediately available.At least one dog was also injured in the crash, the CHP said. Three others were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries.Campo Road was temporarily closed at 9:55 p.m. for the crash and death investigation. The roadway was reopened about 11:05 p.m., the CHP said.Campo is a small town in the southeastern portion of San Diego County. 799

CARMEL VALLEY (KGTV) - Schools are urging parents to learn more about the hit Netflix show '13 Reasons Why' so they can have a conversation with their kids.The first season of the show came out in March of 2017, and immediately after searches on Google relating to suicide skyrocketed.Particularly, "how to commit suicide" up?26%, "suicide prevention" rose 23% and "suicide hotline number" was up 21% according to a research paper published in JAMA International Medicine and CNN.At Carmel Valley Middle School, they faced that very serious issue personally. Three 7th graders, Madison, Lauren and Ximena saw their friend, who moved to LA, posting her pain on social media. She was cutting."She was posting a lot of videos on social media holding up an exact-o-knife and talking about all this," Madison said."I found out first and texted both of them and said we have to do something about it," Ximena said it was on her Snapchat story.Madison said they were taught in P.E. that this kind of act is a plea for help. They went to their counselor, Karen Infantino who went the extra step, reaching out to a counselor at the friend's new school, ensuring she got the help she needed."And was able to reach out and make sure that she was in a good place but it’s also really important for me to make sure that any student that comes to me feels listened to and acknowledged," Infantino said.The sentiment of being heard could've changed the entire plot of '13 Reasons Why.'The main character of the dramatic series reveals the reasons she committed suicide.
