Employees at the Buffalo Museum of Science found something they didn't know they had in their collection.According to Kathy Leacock, director of collections, that isn't difficult to do considering that the museum has over "700,000 items in their collection."What they found was an egg from the now extinct Elephant Bird. It's huge to say the least, weighing 3 1/2 pounds. The egg was not really lost, it was just thought to be a model or a replica. That's how it had been mislabeled for many years. "We found in our documentary evidence that's it's been here since 1939," Leacock said. There are only a handful of the rare eggs in existence. The Elephant Bird is believed to have gone extinct around the 17th century. This egg, thought to be priceless, will go on display at the Museum of Science May 1st. You can get more information at the museum's website.  902

ENCINITAS (CNS) - The city of Encinitas announced its intent Tuesday to join a countywide joint-powers authority that would provide energy service to residents and compete with private companies like San Diego Gas & Electric. The Encinitas City Council voted Aug. 21 to join the JPA, which will be headed by the city of San Diego, because it aligns with the city's Climate Action Plan. In February, the San Diego City Council voted to begin the process of establishing a so-called community choice energy program with the intention of inviting other cities into the fold as the program expands. The county of San Diego and the cities of Chula Vista and La Mesa have also expressed a willingness to join the CCE program in recent weeks. Later this year, the San Diego City Council will officially vote to form the authority.RELATED: San Diego to begin building alternative to SDG&E"We're excited to work together with the City of San Diego in accomplishing this key component of our very similar Climate Action Plans," Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear said. "Partnering in a large regional JPA gives us many more opportunities to develop large-scale projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gases in the region."If the city of San Diego remains on its current timeline, the joint- powers authority would hire a CEO and CFO by the end of the year and begin hiring staff and securing funding in early 2020.City officials hope to have the project off the ground and providing energy in 2021, but would need to submit the proposal to the state's Public Utility Commission by the end of the year to make that deadline. The Encinitas City Council plans to vote on a draft JPA agreement in September. 1702

Facebook announced on Friday that the social network had exposed the private photos of millions of users without their permission. The company said a bug recently allowed third-party app developers to access photos people may not have shared publicly. Facebook believes as many as 6.8 million users could be affected.Photos that users started to upload to Facebook but did not post could have been accessed, along with images posted to Facebook Stories, Tomer Bar, an engineering director at Facebook, wrote in a blog post."We're sorry this happened," he added.Users' photos were exposed over a 12 day period in September, the blog post said. When asked why Facebook waited to inform the public of the issue, a Facebook spokesperson told CNN Business, "We have been investigating the issue since it was discovered to try and understand its impact so that we could ensure we are contacting the right developers and people affected by the bug. It then took us some time to build a meaningful way to notify people, and get translations done."The information Facebook gives to third-party app developers continues to be under scrutiny. Earlier this year, a data scientist working for Cambridge Analytica revealed the company had several years ago used the system to gather data on tens of millions of Americans. As a result of this bug, the company said it believes the photos could have been accessed by 1,500 apps built by 876 developers.Facebook said it will notify people potentially impacted by the bug. 1509

Faculty members at Lehigh University have voted overwhelmingly in favor of rescinding President Donald Trump's honorary degree.Trump was presented with the honorary degree in 1988, when he was chosen by the graduating class as commencement speaker. It was standard for all commencement speakers to be given honorary diplomas at that time, Lehigh spokesperson Lori Friedman told CNN.More than 80% of voting-eligible faculty affirmed the?motion asking that the Pennsylvania college's Board of Trustees revoke the honor. Only 14% voted against the motion. It will now be conveyed to the board, according to Faculty Steering Committee Chair Doug Mahoney.Dr. Michael Raposa, who helped to draft the motion, told CNN that it was intended to reflect that faculty members "don't want Lehigh to be identified with the kind of sexist, racist, and Islamophobic utterances" he says the President has made. The motion was not meant to serve as a comment on Trump's political views or positions, he said."We did not want this to be a debate about politics," he said.Raposa told CNN he felt the results of the vote represented the "clearly articulated voice of the faculty."The faculty motion was preceded by two petitions, including an online one?that garnered more than 30,000 signatures. It was presented to the Board of Trustees in August 2016, but at the time, the committee voted to take "no action."While Raposa said that he hopes the Board of Trustees "will act in way that they will feel proud of," he noted that ultimately "it's really important that the faculty has spoken." 1593
