CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Faith leaders and business owners in Chula Vista attended a training Monday night to learn how to plan and prepare for an active shooter threat. Chula Vista police lieutenant, Dan Peak, tells 10News the department received several calls after the Poway Synagogue shooting, asking officers how they could stay safe in the event of an active shooter at their place of worship or business. Chula Vista Police Sergeant, Mike Varga, provided the training for the community. Varga's presentation included a history of active shooters, red flags to look out for, and what to do if you find yourself in an active shooter situation. His advice in that situation is to run, hide or fight. During the presentation, Varga played a 9-minute video detailing exactly what one can do to survive a shooting. Varga also told the audience to listen to their intuition, meaning if someone is displaying red flags, alert the police and let investigators decide whether or not there is a threat. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man suspected of robbing a South Bay credit union was arrested following a crash Wednesday afternoon. According to Chula Vista Police, a man entered the Cal Coast Credit Union on the 300 block of East H Street around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the man approached the teller window with his hand in his pocket simulating a weapon and demanded cash from the employee. After receiving the cash, the suspect left the credit union, getting into a getaway vehicle. Police were able to locate suspect based on vehicle information provided by a customer at the credit union. Officers spotted the vehicle going eastbound on H Street and tried to pull the suspect over, but he didn’t stop instead leading police on a chase. At some point during the chase, police say the man ran a red light on Otay Lakes Road, slamming into another vehicle. Both the suspect and victim in the crash were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police haven’t yet released the name of the suspect but say he is under arrest for the bank robbery and felony evasion. 1100

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Detectives worked Friday to determine who fatally shot a man in a South Bay parking lot, apparently during a quarrel over a dog.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Interstate 5 and state Route 54 shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday found Corey McCastle, 41, on the ground in the 700 block of E Street in Chula Vista, suffering from bullet wounds, according to police.Paramedics took McCastle to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead."The motive for the shooting remains unknown," Lt. Dan Peak said. "However, it is believed McCastle had gone to the location to speak with an unknown individual regarding a dispute over a dog."The shooter was described only as a man dressed in dark-colored clothes and armed with a handgun.Further details on the disagreement that apparently led to the slaying was not immediately available. 888

(KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050
