SAN DIEGO (AP) — The sole suspect in a fatal shooting at a Southern California synagogue pleaded not guilty to federal hate crimes and other charges Tuesday.John T. Earnest entered the plea a week after a grand jury returned a 113-count indictment that largely mirrors a complaint filed shortly after his arrest on April 27. The indictment added four counts of using and carrying a firearm during commission of a violent crime.Earnest's parents attended the brief hearing but did not seem to exchange eye contact with their 19-year-old son. The suspect spoke only once, to acknowledge his name. Two days after the shooting, the family said their son's actions "were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold.""To our great shame, he is now part of the history of evil that has been perpetrated on Jewish people for centuries," they said in their only public statement since the shooting.Earnest looked blankly ahead as one of his attorneys argued that shackles should be removed from his wrists, ankles and waist during the hearing. Peter Ko, a prosecutor, countered, "He tried to commit mass murder," and the judge, Michael Berg, denied the defense request.Earnest also faces charges of murder and attempted murder for the attack on Chabad of Poway on the last day of Passover. One person died and three were injured. He is being represented by public defenders. His family is not paying his legal costs. Both federal and state crimes make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted but prosecutors have not said if they will seek it. 1563

SAN DIEGO — San Diegans can participate in AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine trial, which recently showed 90 percent effectiveness under a certain dosage.AstraZeneca announced Monday that its vaccine was 90 percent effective when participants started with a half dose, followed by a full dose at least four weeks later. It is currently seeking participants through UC San Diego Health and other partners for its ongoing trials. Full doses given four weeks apart were 62 percent effective in the trial. “These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, in a statement released by AstraZeneca. "Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90 percent effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply."Elana Godebu, a UC San Diego urologist, said she has seen the impacts of Coronavirus firsthand. She is currently practicing at El Centro Regional Medical Center, affiliated with UC San Diego. She says the center is filling up because of a rise in local cases and patients coming up from Mexico. The state recently built a 50-bed tent in the parking lot for non-Covid patients. Godebu got the first dose of the vaccine two weeks ago, which also could have been a placebo."Personally I've seen my friends and my colleagues and my patients, they've gotten sick, they've lost family, they've lost friends, and so we got the AstraZenica trial out in El Centro," she said. Godebu said she encourages anyone who has an opportunity to get the vaccine to take advantage. "If we try to get to herd immunity the other way we're going to lose so many people," she said. AstraZenica is the latest drugmaker to report strong efficacy. Earlier this month, Pfizer and Moderna said their trials were 95 percent effective. AstraZenica says its vaccine could separate from the others because it can be transported, handled and stored at regular refrigerated temperatures and administered in regular health care settings. 2099

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Planning Commission advanced a plan Thursday that would make the Midway District more vibrant by adding housing, commercial projects and parks. The plan would grow the area’s housing from 2,000 to 11,000 over the next 20 years. Business development in the area would also generate a similar number of jobs. The district would also boast nearly 30 acres of parks. "We think it's an important opportunity to provide for the park needs of the community," project manager Vickie White said. The parks would all fit into an improved pedestrian and bile network that would make use of existing transit infrastructure. The city hopes the network would reduce the area’s reliance on cars."We're focused on creating comfortable connections along transit corridors to make this a more appealing area to walk or bike -- we see a lot off opportunities for modal increase in this area," White said.Reducing reliance on cars also complies with a citywide climate action plan. "If there's one real, glaring problem with this community it's a lack of connectivity from district to district," Commissioner William Hofman said. The area around sports arena and Valley View Casino Center would also get additional streets and paths. The plan includes a variety of possibilities for the sports arena including operating it as is or demolishing it and pushing for other land-use opportunities. The plan will now go to the City Council’s Smart Growth and Land Use Committee in May. 1493

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A drunken driver who crashed into a Lyft vehicle at high speed on state Route 163 in Balboa Park -- killing one passenger and injuring the other two occupants -- pleaded guilty Wednesday to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury. Alondra Selena Marquez, 22, of San Diego, faces up to 13 years and four months in prison, with sentencing slated for Sept. 24 at the downtown San Diego courthouse. Prosecutors say Marquez had a .25 percent blood alcohol content -- more than three times the legal limit -- at the time of the March 23 crash that killed San Francisco resident Giao Pham. RELATED: 1 dead, 3 injured in crash along SR-163Pham, 40, was in San Diego to attend a wedding when the vehicle he was riding in was struck from behind by Marquez's car about 2:30 a.m. on SR 163 near Laurel Street. Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright said Marquez was traveling somewhere between 101 and 108 miles per hour at the time. The other passenger -- Pham's friend, Andy Lynn -- was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury, which still affects him to this day, the prosecutor said. The Lyft driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, but has had to seek counseling due to the emotional after-effects of the crash, according to Bright. 1289
