SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New data released by the San Diego County Office of Education show three-fourths of all K-12 students in the County are now studying online and experts believe that number will increase by the start of the new year.Poway parent, Caroline Epps, told her three children recently that they would be going back to virtual learning."I could tell they were disappointed," Epps said. "It's been nice having them there even though it's been such a short time. It's going to be a little difficult having them at home the whole day again."Poway Unified is one of the few school districts that are still offering modified in-person instruction, only to elementary students. But earlier this week, the district announced they would be recommending all students to revert to distance learning after winter break."My oldest will have the most difficult time with that because her assignments are more complex," Epps said.The decision comes after another surge in COVID-19 cases. Bob Mueller with the County Office of Education says 75% of K-12 students are now learning remotely, up from 68% last month."We are seeing the impact of gatherings for Thanksgiving," Mueller said. "It's likely that we will see the surge deepen for a time as we feel the impact of gatherings for the December holidays."School staff getting sick or having to quarantine are resulting in a serious staffing shortage."We are seeing unprecedented demand for substitutes," Mueller said. We need more people to work in those roles than we've ever needed before."Epps says while it is not ideal, she understands the situation. So she and her children will have to adapt and overcome."I don't think anyone wants the school year to be the way it has been," Epps said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People on social media are outraged after video shows a security guard questioning a mother's immigration status in a Target parking lot. The woman who recorded and posted the video, Sonia Serrano Zavala, says the guard was asking the mother if she is here legally when she started recording. The unidentified security guard can be heard in the video saying, "You’re illegally here and you’re having babies and you’re probably on welfare."The woman, seen holding a baby in the parking lot, was reportedly asking for money. Midway through the video, the security guard says "it's a scam" and claims the woman has a car and a condo.The incident took place at a Target located in the Marketplace at the Grove Shopping Center. The guard does not work specifically for Target, but provides security for the entire shopping center. The company who hires the security guards for the mall said, "The behavior of this employee is not reflective of the standards we have set for our security professionals, and we will address it."WARNING: The video below contains graphic language.  1136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New details about the high speed chase that backed up traffic on Interstate 5 in La Jolla last week.Today, the driver faced a judge. Nancy Sussman is no stranger to the courthouse. Usually, she’s representing her clients, but this time she’s defending herself against criminal charges that could send her to prison.Traffic backed up. Drivers snapping video of how the high speed chase ended. Police say Sussman finally stopped when they laid down spike strips. Still, they say she refused to come out of the car, eventually forcing them to smash out one of the windows.10News is learning new details about the woman behind the wheel of the white Mercedes. Sussman is a longtime medical malpractice attorney.RELATED: Woman arrested after leading police on chaseIn court Tuesday, she represented herself. “Are you an attorney,” the judge asked.The judge entered a not guilty plea on Sussman’s behalf. She’s charged with felony evading, driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest.Sussman tried to explain to the judge why she didn’t stop. “Regarding the chase, I was a victim of police brutality on October 28th.”According to a police report, the October 28 case involves Sussman and her neighbor, a Border Patrol agent. In that case, she’s charged with burglary, making criminal threats, vandalism and other charges.On December 30, police tried pulling her over on that warrant, finally arresting her after that chase on I-5.If convicted on the charges connected to the chase, Sussman faces more than six years in prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New advertisements against Measure B riled up supporters, who spoke out against the massive development Friday.The commercial states, "Measure B the Newland Sierra project, is a luxury development," something supporters vehemently deny."What I think is disingenuous is making people feel fearful of what can happen in this development," supporter Melinda Vasquez said.Friday, dozens gathered in Kearny Mesa to advocate for Newland Sierra's development project. The group included teachers and firefighters who want more affordable home options in San Diego.RELATED: El Cajon takes risks to help lower cost of housing"Home ownership has become less of a reality for families like mine," Cindy Lopez said. She is a first generation American (her parents moved from Mexico) and a teacher. She teaches first- and second-graders, and comes home to a 12-month-old."Even though she's a toddler we're going to be expanding soon in the future and we're going to need that space, that affordable space to grow our family," Lopez said she is always budget conscious for her family.The county's existing general plan calls for 99 homes and up to 2,000,000 square feet of commercial property with open space. They said the development will have a spread of apartments for seniors and low low income, affordable town-homes, and individual homes. The highest bracket in the chart showed 1,570 or more.
