SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are desperate for affordable housing and scammers are taking notice and using new tricks. 10News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to the District Attorney's Office about how the internet is flooded right now with local rentals ads that are fake, and how renters can avoid getting burned. When Nicole Lloyd saw a Craigslist ad for a three-bedroom home in Clairemont for 50 a month, she jumped on it. “It sounded too good to be true, but [I had to] check it out,” she tells us.The person who said he was the owner sent her a text. “He said that he was out-of-state,” says Lloyd. He gave her a code for the front door and told her to let herself in. After she toured the property, he wanted her to wire him money through Western Union before he would prepare a lease.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Study shows one-bedroom apartment rent in San Diego is cheaper than studio rentLloyd smelled a scam.“I probably see about three or four [rental scams] in a week,” explains San Diego County Deputy DA Brendan McHugh. McHugh says online rental scams are hugely prevalent right now, but most of the time scammers won't let renters see the property before asking for a wire transfer, which makes Lloyd's situation unique. She got to see the home first.“That's kind of what made us believe it might be real,” Lloyd adds.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: Strangers team up to afford the rent10News found the true owner, a home leasing company called Invitation Homes. The company confirmed that the house was being used in a scam.A statement from the company to 10News reads, “With regard to the home on Broadlawn Street, we have seen fraudulent activity, but fortunately no one has fallen victim to the attempted scam at this home. We have posted a sign in the home, as we do in all of our homes, alerting potential residents of potential scams so that they that will be particularly vigilant. We have asked Craigslist to remove the fraudulent listing, which they have (we do not advertise on Craigslist), and we have turned off the self-show option on the home so that prospective residents are able to view the home only if accompanied by an Invitation Homes agent.”“I was on Apartments.com, Zillow, Craigslist and a few other recommended [sites] that people gave me,” says Rebecca Weinrib.RELATED: San Diego's top neighborhoods to get more rental space for the moneyWeinrib admits that even she almost fell for online rental scams when she was recently looking for a place in Little Italy.“I went to law school. I run a company. I started a nonprofit…however, I don't remember seeing this situation two years ago when I was renting,” she adds.Weinrib was bombarded with requests to send money before she was allowed to see the properties. “A lot of them would say, ‘Wire it.’” She tells us a lot of them would also tell her that they don’t live locally.“You'll often see these scams saying that the person you need to talk to is deployed so just send the money and information now and we'll deal with it later,” says McHugh. He adds, “If you can't go inside and see the property before you're required to exchange money or personal identifying information, that's another huge red flag.”McHugh also says that it's best to be cautious when landlords are using auto-generated email addresses and when landlords post ads that contain several grammatical errors. 3405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center. For a list of locations, call 22 or visit the San Diego Immunization Program website. 1129

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego officials will request that Gov. Gavin Newsom discount coronavirus cases in San Diego State students from the county's case rate.Supervisor Greg Cox said the county will send a letter to the governor formally asking that the state not include SDSU's case numbers in the county's total coronavirus case rate.Gov. Newsom said during a press conference Wednesday that he will not allow San Diego County to do that."You can't isolate, as if it's on an island, the campus community that is part of a larger community. So the answer is no," Newsom said in regards to whether he would consider a special exemption for the county.RELATED: San Diego County could backslide to more coronavirus-related restrictionsTuesday, County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said during a Board of Supervisors meeting that if the campus' cases were removed from the equation, the county's case rate would be lower. As of Monday, SDSU reported 667 confirmed cases and nine probable cases.According to county Medical Director Dr. Eric McDonald, less than 10 coronavirus cases have been directly linked to the campus. Of those, McDonald said three cases are county residents with direct connections with SDSU students and four non-county residents with direct connections to students.McDonald added that the county is aware of four residential outbreaks related to SDSU students in the College Area, but there have not been any other outbreaks in other settings related to students."The reality is, the number of cases in ICU and hospitalizations is not being impacted because of those cases from SDSU," Cox said. "We think there's justification for not including those numbers from SDSU and, frankly, other campuses in San Diego as they reopen."San Diego County public health officials voice worried that the region could be moved back a tier after registering at least one week's worth of data in California's most stringent reopening tier. While the county's testing positivity has sat in the third tier (orange) for two weeks now, in the last week, the county's case rate has crossed above the 7.0 cases per 100,000 residents threshold. Wednesday, county health officials said the region was at a 4.5% testing positivity and 7.9 cases per 100,000 people.Under the state's guidance, a county only needs to register above a threshold in at least one metric for two weeks to be pushed back a tier, while to move up, the county needs to meet both metrics for 14 consecutive days."At a minimum, counties must remain in a tier for at least 3 weeks before moving forward ... To move forward, a county must meet the next tier’s criteria for two consecutive weeks. If a county’s metrics worsen for two consecutive weeks, it will be assigned a more restrictive tier," the state's website says.If San Diego is required to move back to California's first business reopening tier, businesses would need to adjust to more restrictive capacity levels. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Museum of Man is changing its name in an effort to be more inclusive. The museum posted on Facebook early Sunday morning that it will now go by the “Museum of Us."“After operating as the San Diego Museum of Man for over 40 years, it is time we step into a new identity that better reflects our values of equity, inclusion, and decolonization,” the post read.RELATED: San Diego's Museum of Man mulls new nameThe museum started its search for a new name in 2018."Our current name served us for 70 years, and now it is time to select a new name that better reflects our values ... better describes all the people we serve and the stories we want to tell and fully embodies our mission of inspiring human connections by exploring the human experience," Shannon Fowler, the museum's director of marketing and communications said at the time. The museum has been a part of Balboa Park since its completion for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The facility is currently closed amid the coronavirus pandemic. 1042

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains. The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said. The areas of San Diego County with the highest joblessness continue to be in central and southern parts of the region. 1742
