SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Neighbors woke up to find disturbing graffiti in their Hillcrest neighborhood.For Lauren Matley, it was hard to hold back tears, as she scraped away the red paint on her car window. This was just one of many vehicles that were painted on along 6th Avenue in Hillcrest. Someone also painted on the side of houses and on a garage.Doctor Barry Kaplan was walking his dog when he noticed the graffiti and he called police. "Several of my grandparents died in the Holocaust. So, for me to see this, this reminds me of Nazi Germany. It’s very offensive," Kaplan said.Though Matley doesn’t know if this was a random act or meant to be antisemitic, she says it hits too close to home being a member of the Jewish community."You wake up and this is what you look forward to? The black community would look forward to? The Jewish community would look forward to? The Muslim community looks forward to?" Matley said.Police say after the reports are written this case will be handed to an investigator. From there it may get handed over to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if this was a hate crime. 1124

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — PETA is taking aim at SeaWorld once again, this time hoping to put a stop to the parks' dolphin shows.Officials held a press conference Wednesday to call out the park for what they called "dangerous," "circus-style" dolphins shows. The group argues trainers use dolphins "as surfboards" and have caused "open wounds and extensive scarring" on the animals."SeaWorld ceded to public pressure and said that it would phase out its circus-style orca shows, but dozens of other dolphins are still packed into shallow tanks, forcibly bred, and used as surfboards and launch pads in its shows," Heather Rally, a PETA Foundation veterinarian, said. "PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end these demeaning tricks and stop standing on dolphins' backs and faces."Rally, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and behavioral biologist Dr. Toni Frohoff presented a report Wednesday in regards to their observations at the parks. The three argued that the shows, which are performed at all three of SeaWorld's parks, risk damage to dolphins' lower jaws. The group says this, in turn, can harm joints, strain muscles, and damage the animals' hearing.SeaWorld held its own press conference in response. In a statement, Dr. Hendrik Nollens, vice president of veterinary services at SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks, called PETA's conference a publicity stunt, adding their paper's claims had no foundation:Their findings are presented in a white paper, which is the equivalent of an online blog, which is not peer-reviewed. They are also presented in a press conference instead of a scientific journal, in the presence of a moviemaker, which should be a red flag to all of us. Make no mistake, at SeaWorld, we are the animal advocates, and the difference is we actually have marine mammal and dolphin expertise; you cannot perform a veterinary exam from the stands.None of these behaviors are a veterinary or animal health concern. We have never diagnosed any injury associated with performing these behaviors, whether during presentations or interactions. If we did, we would have eliminated them by now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Protesters are demanding a change to how sex education is taught to students in California. They say a law passed a few years ago and written by local Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber is sexualizing young minds. The group of protesters is with the Alliance to Protect Children. They tell 10News they are for sex ed in school, but the law is teaching students more than what parents are comfortable with. “It feels like its a disrespect to all mothers and children everywhere,” said mother of two Domonique Hinton. Dozens of protesters stood outside Dr. Shirley Weber’s office downtown Friday morning, speaking against Assembly Bill 329 that was written and passed in 2015. The bill makes it mandatory for students 7th through 12th grade to be taught sex education, but it also gives schools the option to offer the age-appropriate curriculum to lower grades. AB 329 states, “‘Comprehensive sexual health education means education regarding human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections.”Protesters say graphic details of sexuality should not be taught in schools. “That is not the same as sex ed like we probably had in high school or middle school. That's something different,” says organizer America Figueroa. “Just that word, sexuality, it includes a lot of things in it like the teaching of other ideologies as well as sexual behaviors.”The group says a new bill will be introduced next year that will allow parents to review the curriculum online, so there is complete transparency. 10News reached out to Dr. Weber’s team.
