SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Wednesday for help in tracking down a motorist involved in a fatal hit-and-run on a Clairemont- area street last month.The unidentified driver's black four-door sedan struck and killed 44- year-old Shane Moore as he was crossing the street in the 5500 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard shortly before 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22, according to San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner's Office.The motorist continued driving and fled the area to the east. An SUV then ran over the mortally injured pedestrian.Moore, who apparently was homeless, died at the scene, despite efforts by witnesses to render first-aid.Based on broken-off car parts found at the site of the traffic fatality, investigators believe the vehicle that struck Moore was a 2016 or 2017 Honda Accord, police said.Anyone who might be able to help identify the hit-and-run driver is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Circulate San Diego released a report today detailing how cities in southern San Diego County can make progress toward eliminating traffic deaths.The report outlined ways in which Imperial Beach, National City, Chula Vista and Coronado can prevent fatal traffic accidents by making improvements to the cities' most dangerous intersections and roadways.Circulate San Diego suggested the cities should take steps to calm traffic flows like restriping roadways to narrow them and reduce speeds. Circulate also recommended that the highlighted cities should asses driving behaviors that lead to serious injury and fatal car accidents and work with local law enforcement officers to target those behaviors through education and traffic law enforcement."Every city has room for improvement to make streets safe and we look forward to working with each South County city to save lives,'' said Maya Rosas, co-author of the study and the organization's director of policy.The report is part of the organization's participation in the Vision Zero campaign, which aims to eliminate fatal traffic accidents altogether. Circulate San Diego and the city of San Diego have already set a goal of eliminating traffic deaths in the city by 2025.The organization made similar recommendations to the city of San Diego last year and the city subsequently repaired its 15 most dangerous intersections. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who ambushed a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop at knifepoint, tried to sexually assault her and stole her SUV, was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison.Christopher Merron, 28, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 14 as the victim was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street. Merron pushed the woman into a back room, took her car keys and threatened her with a knife, according to police and prosecutors.Following a struggle, she was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden.The assailant fled in the woman's 1998 GMC Jimmy. Merron was arrested in Mission Valley the next day and the victim's SUV was recovered, Weeden said.Merron pleaded guilty in January to assault with intent to commit a sex offense, robbery and sexual battery charges and admitted a knife-use sentencing enhancement allegation. Other charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense, attempted oral copulation, false imprisonment with force and auto theft, were dismissed at sentencing. 1165

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was hospitalized in San Diego Saturday morning after being seriously injured when he laid down in front of his friend's car during an argument and was run over, authorities said Saturday.The incident occurred at 11:15 p.m. Friday in the 5800 block of Market Street in the Emerald Hills neighborhood, according to Officer John Buttle with the San Diego Police Department.The victim argued with his friend and in an attempt to get his friend's attention, he laid down in the street in front of a car the suspect was driving and was run over, Buttle said.A friend of the victim called 911 to report the incident and the suspect got out of the car and took the friend's cell phone and told the 911 operator the victim had laid down intentionally in front of his car, then the suspect drove away from the scene, said Buttle.The victim was transported to a hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, he said.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe suspect's vehicle is a 2001 burgundy Mazda 4-door with California license plate number 7XNW211. 1095
