GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

Google said Monday it is shutting down the long ailing social network Google+ for consumer use amid new scrutiny of the company for reportedly failing to publicly disclose a security bug affecting users of the service.In a blog post, the company admitted Google+ had failed to achieve "broad consumer or developer adoption" since it launched as a would-be Facebook rival in 2011. However, the announcement came moments after The Wall Street Journal reported Google had opted not to disclose a bug affecting hundreds of thousands of Google+ users at least in part to avoid additional regulatory scrutiny.Google said in the blog post that it "discovered and immediately patched" a bug in March 2018. It said the bug could have affected up to 500,000 Google+ accounts, but the company found "no evidence" that any data was actually misused."Every year, we send millions of notifications to users about privacy and security bugs and issues," a spokesperson for Google said in a statement provided to CNN Business. GLENDALE, Wisconsin -- A woman filed a civil lawsuit against four members of the Glendale Police Department. The suit filed in federal court is demanding million.She claims the investigation into a dog attack that took place in March 2017 was not handled properly. The suit claims the woman was attacked by a 3-year-old Presa Canario and suffered injuries to her head, back and wrist that required more than 140 medical treatments, including 11 staples in her scalp, puncture wounds on her back and an injured wrist, which needed three surgeries to fix.A police report from the incident claims that her hand was "completely covered in blood and her hair appeared to be blood soaked."The woman also claimed the attack resulted in emotional trauma.The dog qas temporarily quarantined for 10 days. The woman also claims that police were not aware of procedure for dog attacks.The woman no charges were filed in the incident, and when she called repeatedly for an update in the investigation, a sergeant told her that "f you don't like the way we handle this get yourself an attorney and sue us."Both the Glendale police chief and the city's attorney declined to comment, citing pending litigation.Glendale City Attorney John Fuchs issued the following statement."She went into the dog's yard and approached the dog. Harris County, Texas Sheriff's deputies in Houston were forced to shut down an ATM in Houston on Sunday night after a huge crowd had gathered to take advantage of the machine dispersing 0 bills instead of bills, the Houston Chronicle reported. Rather than trying to recoup its losses, Bank of America announced that it would not force those who were able to snag the 0 bills to repay. “This was an incident at a single ATM in Houston caused when a vendor incorrectly loaded 0 bills in place of bills,” Bank of America said in a statement to the Chronicle. “We have resolved the matter. Customers will be able to keep the additional money dispensed.”KPRC-TV said that the crowd converged on the Houston ATM Sunday night after a man posted on social media, boasting about the transaction. KPRC added that a few fights took place near the ATM, which prompted deputies to shut down the ATM. Bank of America did not say how many customers profited off of the ATM.   1020
