WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says she is receiving chemotherapy for a recurrence of cancer, but has no plans to retire from the Supreme Court. The 87-year-old Ginsburg said her treatment so far has succeeded in reducing lesions on her liver and that she will continue chemotherapy sessions every two weeks. She spent time in the hospital this week for a possible infection, but Ginsburg said it was unrelated to the cancer.Here is Friday's full statement as distributed by the court to several outlets, including CNN:"On May 19, I began a course of chemotherapy (gemcitabine) to treat a recurrence of cancer. A periodic scan in February followed by a biopsy revealed lesions on my liver. My recent hospitalizations to remove gall stones and treat an infection were unrelated to this recurrence.Immunotherapy first essayed proved unsuccessful. The chemotherapy course, however, is yielding positive results. Satisfied that my treatment course is now clear, I am providing this information.My most recent scan on July 7 indicated significant reduction of the liver lesions and no new disease. I am tolerating chemotherapy well and am encouraged by the success of my current treatment. I will continue bi-weekly chemotherapy to keep my cancer at bay, and am able to maintain an active daily routine. Throughout, I have kept up with opinion writing and all other Court work.I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam. Walmart says they plan to pay their workers in the United States a holiday cash bonus.In a press release, the company announced an estimated 8 million in special cash bonuses on Dec. 24, which comes out to be 0 for full-time employees and 0 for part-time workers.Drivers, coaches, and assistant managers will also receive a special cash bonus, Walmart said in a press release.The company paid employees 9 million in quarterly bonuses on Nov. 25, "following a strong third-quarter business performance."According to Walmart, it has paid a total of more than .8 billion in bonuses in 2020.Walmart also announced they are extending its leave policy through July 5, 2021, amid the ongoing pandemic.The policy currently provides "associates with up to two weeks of pay should they need to stay home for COVID-related reasons, including mandated quarantines, symptoms, or illness."The company said employees unable to return to work after that time would receive additional pay replacement for up to 26 weeks. 1025

Virginia Beach Police are investigating a shooting that seriously injured two people early Sunday morning.Officers were alerted to multiple shots fired in the area around 12:45 a.m. A woman was located and suffering from a life-threatening wound. Medics treated the woman and took her to the hospital.A few minutes later at 12:48 a.m., officers received word that a victim with life-threatening injuries was located in several blocks away. EMS treated and took the victim to the hospital for further treatment.A possible suspect has been detained and the investigation is ongoing.Prior to this shooting, police responded to another shooting at the 1900 block of the Boardwalk. A woman suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.There is an increased police presence throughout the oceanfront area due to College Beach Weekend. Problems with violence in past years have caused some to be critical of the event. Last year, thousands signed a petition calling for an end to College Beach Weekend after four people at the Oceanfront were injured from a shooting. 1078

Voters in Maine are trying out a new election system this year.“It is going to be used this fall for the first time in the presidential race, and that was a focus of a series of court challenges that went back and forth up though just a few weeks ago before it was finally determined, yes it will be used in the presidential race,” said Mark Brewer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Maine.What is ranked-choice voting? And how does it differ from how you fill out the more traditional “choose one,” or plurality, ballot design?“Normally you'll have a grid of candidates, all the candidate names on the left side and all of your choice columns along the top,” said Chris Hughes with the Ranked Choice Voting Resource Center. “Once we get everybody's ballots in, you count up all the first choices. If anyone has the majority, they get 50% of all those first choices, then that person is the winner.”However, if no candidate gets 50%, “you eliminate whoever has the fewest first choices and count the second choices on those ballots instead,” Hughes said.Ranked-choice voting has already been used for some local elections in states like California.“The big surge we’ve seen in the last 20 years started in San Francisco. San Francisco adopted ranked-choice voting in 2002 to eliminate their run off elections. Now they have a single general election,” Hughes said. “The last 20 years we’ve seen this huge growth, even between 2016 and 2020 we’ve seen five more cities adopt ranked-choice voting.”Why is Maine making the change now, in the brink of a critical presidential race? I can't imagine we will.
