SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Extreme temperatures set several records in cities across San Diego County on Saturday.As the region sweltered under the heat, the mercury went soaring. Seven records were set, including:Escondido: 111 degrees (old record was 108 in 1984)Ramona: 112 degrees (old record was 102 in 2006)Alpine: 113 degrees (old record was 110 in 1984)El Cajon: 114 degrees (old record was 107 in 1984)Palomar Mountain: 97 degrees (old record was 96 in 1955)Campo: 108 degrees (old record was 104 in 1955)Borrego Springs: 117 degrees (old record was 113 in 1989)Poway unofficially set an all-time record of 113 degrees, but it falls out of the National Weather Services 30-year period of record.Temperatures across the county on Saturday were forecasted to hit as high as 122 while many coastal areas could see high 90s.Saturday into Sunday, overnight temperatures along the coast, inland, and mountain areas will hover in the 70s most of the night, and 90s and 80s in the deserts. A gradual return to cooler temperatures won't be in the mix until beginning Monday for coastal communities. Above normal temperatures are expected through next week. 1156

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Democratic presidential candidates took direct aim President Trump and the nation's gun laws at the Unidos US political conference in San Diego Monday. “We don't need thoughts and prayers out of Washington. What we need is strength and some resolve that we haven't seen yet,” said former Vice President Joe Biden.In an interview, candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders renewed calls for an assault weapons ban but acknowledged uwpards of 10 million are already in civilian hands. “That is more than the United States military has,” Sanders said. "We have to immediately ban the sale and distribution; I think we ought to take a hard look about licensing these weapons for the people who own them."Sanders added a buyback program would also be an option.Sen. Amy Klobuchar said the Democrats are dealing with a powerful gun lobby."I come from a hunting state, I come from a law enforcement background, but when I got to the Senate I couldn't believe the power of the NRA and the power of the other groups that have tried to stop that in the track,” she said. Candidates also criticized President Trump for his anti-immigration rhetoric, saying it has lead to an increase in white nationalism across the U.S.“We are all equal and should be treated that way. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of homeless individuals remain evacuated at SDCCU Stadium after heavy rains flooded an East Village shelter this week, forcing them to leave.Flooding Thursday night overturned portable restroom facilities at the Alpha Project facility, turning the ground into a swamp of feces and human waste and inundating tents meant to house the homeless from the storm.Saturday, those evacuated remained at the Mission Valley stadium. Mayor Kevin Faulconer planned to visit the stadium to meet with those evacuated.RELATED: Hundreds of homeless evacuated as rain floods downtown San Diego shelterHomeless individuals at the stadium were given food and a clean place to sleep, but Red Cross organizers say they need new clothing, blankets, and socks to help replace what was lost. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of families of babies once cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch were reunited with their medical teams on Saturday.Sharp Mary Birch hosted its annual NICU Little Graduates Reunion at NTC Park at Liberty Station. The hospital holds the event each fall. The event is an opportunity for past NICU families to reunite with the doctors, nurses and team members who cared for them during their stay and celebrate their child’s health.Aldy and Alan Serrano went with their son, Xander. Xander weighed just 14 ounces when he was born in 2016. Xander spent nearly four months in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Besides seeing doctors and nurses, the Serrano's are thankful to be reunited with other families who also had children in the NICU during that time."When you're going through it, it's very difficult to explain to other people how you're feeling and whats actually happening. It's nice to have somebody to relate to," Aldy said.They have made relationships that will last a lifetime."We have several friends we met during our NICU stay that are now like family," Aldy said. "The challenges in the NICU don't stop in the NICU. As they grow up, there are so many other things that can happen that they can relate to."Xander is now an active happy and healthy toddler. He will be two at the end of the month.The reunion event also had a bounce house, bubble station, music, costumed Storm Troopers and games for all ages to enjoy. Sharp Mary Birch offers a full range of maternity, neonatal, and women’s surgical services, and delivers more than 9,000 babies annually.
