As a young adult, he worked for Sycuan's gaming commission for a few years, then landed a seat in the tribal council as the tribal treasurer.After taking some time off after losing reelection as tribal treasurer, he later took a role in the planning and development department.Ultimately, Martinez would gain support from tribal families in 2014 and make his way into a leadership role, serving as the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation's Chairman.He was reelected in 2018 and currently holds the position."Sometimes, with all the political craziness and COVID craziness, I find solitude and reassurance that we get to manage our own community," he said.Martinez is thrilled to celebrate Native American Heritage Month again, hanging on to the rich history and keeping it alive by passing it all down to the next generations."The cultural exposure, I have two sons, 10 and 12, to their generation has definitely grown, their exposure and access to cultural enrichment. My sons were able to learn how to count in Kumeyaay and basic numbers and directions when they were very young," he said. EL PASO, Texas - A cathedral in El Paso was vandalized while the church was open and available for prayer Tuesday morning.The Diocese of El Paso says a suspect came into the sanctuary at St. Patrick Cathedral around 10 a.m. and destroyed an almost 90-year-old statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was located in the center behind the main altar.“I am in shock and we at the Cathedral are heartbroken over such an unexpected situation,” said The Rector of St. Patrick Cathedral, Fr. DURANGO, Colo. – The young bear that was burned in the East Canyon Fire in June was released back into the wild this week not far from where it was found, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.The 2-year-old bear had been recovering at CPW’s Frisco Creek rehab facility in Del Norte from burns he suffered during the fire. CPW said the bear weighed only 43 pounds when he was first captured in the fire.But after undergoing salve treatment on his paws, and having his bandages changed 16 times over the course of a month, he recovered and was moved from a pen with concrete floors to one with trees and hiding spaces mid-July, where he spent the past monthMichael Sirochman, the veterinary technician and manager at Frisco Creek, said the bear was 110 pounds and had seen its paws toughen up before he was released Monday.“He’s now about the weight he should be for a two-year-old bear and is in good shape for going into the fall,” Sirochman said.CPW officers originally found the bear on June 16 walking near a pond on the east side of the East Canyon Fire, which burned in June outside of Durango. EAST COUNTY (CNS) - One person was killed and two people were seriously injured Saturday in a head-on collision in Dulzura, Cal Fire officials said.The collision happened at 6:35 a.m. on state Route 94 near Community Building Road, according to Cal Fire, with one victim taken to a hospital by air ambulance and another by ground ambulance.The California Highway Patrol said a vehicle went off the side of the road about 50 feet down an embankment and was totaled.Traffic on SR-94 was stopped in both directions for several hours while the accident was cleared and investigated.
