The percentage of Americans who say they would probably or definitely get a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available has sharply decreased in just the last few months.A survey done in mid-September by the Pew Research Center found only 51 percent of respondents would definitely or probably get the vaccine when one became available. A similar survey done in May found 72 percent of participants would definitely or probably get the vaccine. The 21 point drop was all in the “definitely would get the vaccine” category, according to the data.According to the data, a large drop in the number of American who would get the vaccine was seen in both Republican leaning respondents and Democratic leaning.Republican participants went from 65 percent would get the vaccine in May to 44 percent in September. Participants who identified as Democratic went from 79 percent would get the vaccine in May to 58 percent in September.Large drops were seen across gender, race and ethnicity as well.“About three-quarters of Americans (77%) say it is at least somewhat likely that a vaccine for COVID-19 will be approved and used in the U.S. before it’s fully known whether it is safe and effective, including 36% who say this is very likely to happen,” Pew Research Center wrote of their findings.Of the 49 percent who would not get a vaccine, the majority of them are worried about potential side effects.Side effects are also a concern for those who would get the vaccine. Of the 51 percent who said they would probably or definitely get the vaccine, more than half said that if many people were experiencing minor side effects they would reconsider getting the vaccine.The data came from more than 10,000 Americans surveyed between September 8-13. 1748

The holidays are right around the corner, but Walmart won't be hiring for help.The retailer plans to meet its need for extra work during the holiday shopping season by giving existing employees more hours, according to a release from the company.Hiring seasonal holiday help is a tradition in retail. Walmart rival Target has already announced plans to bring on 100,000 temporary holiday workers.But Walmart's move is a sign of the tightening labor market which has made it difficult for employers to fill open positions. There were a record number of unfilled job openings nationwide in the latest government reading of the labor market. More than 600,000 of the open positions were from retail.It also can be seen as part of the effort by Walmart, the nation's largest private sector employer, to make jobs there more attractive and to cutdown on turnover.The company announced a series of pay raises for its lowest paid employees in early 2015, which took the minimum pay for most employees to an hour by last year, and the average pay for its full-time workers to about an hour. The mayor of a California town says police are investigating after video widely shared on social media shows a woman making racist remarks about a Filipino American woman who was exercising in a local park.Patrick Furey, the mayor of Torrence, California, says the city is aware of the viral video."All visitors to our open spaces should always feel safe and free to exercise while practicing social distancing without conflict," he said, according to The Los Angeles Times. The Kern County, California District Attorney's Office has decided not to file charges against a man who was on death row for more than two decades, setting him free.Lisa Green made the announcement on Tuesday, saying the case would be nearly impossible to retry in court. She said it would be very difficult to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt of Benavides' guilt.According to a decision released by the California Supreme Court last month, the convictions of Vicente Benavides in 1993 "were based on false evidence and that he received ineffective assistance of counsel."The decision also says that "false evidence was introduced at trial and that petitioner's convictions of substantive sexual offenses, special-circumstance findings, and judgment of death must be vacated."Benavides was convicted in 1993 of first-degree murder, rape and other charges. He was sentenced to life. He was serving his term on death row in San Quentin. It was asked that his murder conviction be reduced to second-degree murder. That was also thrown out. The judgment has been vacated entirely. The California Supreme Court cited multiple doctors who evaluated 21-month-old Consuelo Verdugo in November 1991 when she died. The baby was taken from the Delano Regional Medical Center to Kern Medical Center then eventually the UCLA Medical Center where she died November 25, 1991.Multiple reports were made by doctors who said based off the inability to insert a catheter, bruising found near Consuelo's genitalia and other factors, they believed she had been sexually assaulted.In the report put out by the California Supreme Court, many of those doctors then admitted later they were wrong in their initial assumptions and those issues "can instead be attributed to medical intervention," like multiple attempts at inserting a catheter.Speaking on behalf of Benavides’s post-conviction legal team after the conviction was lifted, the Habeas Corpus Resource Center’s Interim Executive Director, Michael J.
