SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Parks Service will survey San Diego's Chicano Park and its murals as part of efforts to add the land to the national list.The reconnaissance survey is expected to be completed next year and will evaluate the significance of the park and its artwork.The NPS announcement comes after Rep. Juan Vargas introduced a bill in 2019, The Chicano Park Preservation Act, that would require the Department of Interior to conduct a study of the park's merits for national affiliation.RELATED: Bill pushes to add San Diego's Chicano Park to National Park SystemVargas said in a release Wednesday that the NPS is willing to conduct the study without passing a bill requiring the department to do so."I’m very pleased to learn that the National Park Service will begin their preliminary assessment of Chicano Park early next year. The National Park Service affiliation will help protect the park’s longevity and legacy," said Vargas.Being affiliated with the NPS would allow the park to be eligible for technical or financial aid. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance pictures were released Tuesday of a woman who San Diego Police believe struck a parked car and critically injured her passenger in Lincoln Park.The crash happened just before 5 a.m. on the 500 block of South 47th St.A woman driving a gray 2010 Mazda 3 moved to the right side of the road and struck an unoccupied, parked SUV, police said.The crash caused a 79-year-old man who was in the back seat of the Mazda to be thrown forward, striking the front passenger’s seat. The man was not wearing a seatbelt. Police said he is not expected to survive significant head and neck injuries.A 39-year-old man who was sitting in the back seat of the Mazda suffered minor injuries.Police said the female driver walked away from the scene before officers arrived. She is described as African-American and in her 50s. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community is coming together for the family of a San Diego mother of two who died this week while acting as a surrogate for another family.Michelle Reaves was helping a family have children of their own, according to a GoFundMe set up to help her family. It was her second surrogacy for the same family when complications arose and she died while giving birth, the campaign explained.The baby Reaves was carrying survived.Reaves leaves behind two children, Gage and Monroe, and her husband, Chris.The organizer of the GoFundMe campaign is hoping the community will "be there for Michelle’s family like they would for us.""I can’t even begin to imagine what her husband Chris and her two babies are going through so I want to start this page to help raise money for help with the kids, for Chris as they all adjust, funeral services, or anything at all to make it as easy as we can on them," wrote organizer Jaime Herwehe.
