WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats controlling the House say they'll vote next week on a bill that would make the District of Columbia the country's 51st state. It's an issue that they say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington D.C. and across the nation.Next Friday’s vote, if successful, would pass a D.C. statehood bill for the first time in the House, but the legislation faces insurmountable opposition in the GOP-controlled Senate. The White House's move to use federal forces to clear peaceful protesters so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church for a photo op two weeks ago prompted Democratic leaders to schedule the vote.If the measure was signed into law, the state of “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” would be admitted into the U.S. and the new state would elect two U.S. senators and one U.S. representative. The state would consist of all D.C. territory except federal buildings and monuments, including the principal federal monuments, the White House, the Capitol Building, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and the federal executive, legislative, and judicial office buildings located adjacent to the Mall and the Capitol Building. 1221

WASHINGTON — It’s a hurry up and wait moment on Capitol Hill for congressional negotiators on a must-pass, 0 billion COVID-19 economic relief package struggle through a handful of remaining snags. The holdups mean a weekend session appears virtually certain, and a top lawmaker warned that a government shutdown this weekend can’t be ruled out.Government funding is set to expire on Friday at midnight, and lawmakers are seeking to tie the COVID-19 stimulus deal with a funding bill that will keep the government open until next September.According to CNN, Republican leaders have floated a plan that would extend the funding deadline by 48 hours in the hopes of hammering out the final details of the stimulus deal. However, Democrats have indicated that they would like to strike a deal before the deadline — a negotiating ploy, as Republicans would need to strike a deal with their backs against the wall. All sides appear hopeful the wrangling won’t derail the legislation. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already said he plans to keep the Senate in Washington over the weekend in the hopes of striking a deal. The central elements of the hard-fought aid compromise appear in place: more than 0 billion in aid to businesses; a 0-per-week bonus federal jobless benefit and renewal of soon-to-expire state benefits; 0 direct payments to individuals; vaccine distribution funds; and money for renters, schools, the Postal Service and people needing food aid. 1487

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two Sheriff's deputies are under an internal review after video surfaced of an arrest in the North County this week.A 911 call was made Monday from a woman on Madera Lane, who said she was a domestic violence victim and being held against her will, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies responded and said they ultimately arrested Gerardo Martinez Jr., 23, and 50-year-old Gerardo Martinez Sr.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe younger was booked on charges including false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, and disobeying a court order. SDSO charged Martinez Sr. with obstructing a public officer and removing someone from the lawful custody of a peace officer, though he has bailed out of custody.Video of the arrest, however, soon landed at least two deputies involved with the arrest in hot water. The footage posted on social media showed one of the men being led away in handcuffs before a deputy appears to shove him into a fence. The man's face is slammed into the wooden fence before the deputy leads him away.At the same time, four other deputies hold the second man to the ground, one of them appears to repeatedly strike the man in the head. It isn't clear if the man on the ground was also handcuffed or whether the deputy struck the man with a closed fist or open hand. Two deputies have been placed on administrative assignment, pending an internal investigation, SDSO said Wednesday. Investigators will be looking at body-worn camera and interviews with those involved in the incident."As we continue to gather and evaluate the facts of this case, the internal review might change in scope. This review will be comprehensive and include reviewing body-worn camera (BWC) video, all relevant reports and interviews with involved parties," the SDSO release said. 1925

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House is expected to vote this week on a bill that would bring sweeping reform to the nation's drug policy, by removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act.Democratic leadership in the House is preparing for the vote on the bill, called the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act of 2019. The US House Judiciary Committee approved the measure last November. If made into law, the measure would open up business opportunities for legal marijuana nationwide.Still, many steps need to be taken to put the bill into law. If the measure passes the House, it could stall in the Republican-controlled Senate. Utah has worked on its medical marijuana program in the state since voters approved a proposition in 2018. Since its inception, the program has hit a few roadblocks, including issues registering. 860

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress is returning to Washington for one last attempt at deal-making this year. The only absolute must-do is preventing a government shutdown when a temporary spending bill expires on Dec. 11. Lawmakers are also debating whether to deliver another round of coronavirus relief before President Donald Trump leaves office.A virus bill would provide funding for vaccines and testing, for reopening schools and for helping small businesses. However, the parties remain divided on the details and the cost. The Associated Press found that some of the prominent obstacles appear to be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s demand for state and local government aid, as well as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s demand for a liability shield for businesses reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic.Failure to pass a measure would push virus aid to the top of President-elect Joe Biden’s legislative agenda. 922
