SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Opening statements started Wednesday in the trial of a father accused of killing his two children in a fire at his Rancho Bernardo condo in 2017. Investigators said Henry Lopez passed out drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a fire that spread to the rest of the home. His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, died as a result of smoke inhalation. Lopez was also hospitalized with burns. Lopez’ ex-wife Nikia testified at his preliminary hearing in February 2018, saying the couple was in the custody of a divorce. Nikia Lopez also said her ex-spouse was an abusive alcoholic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than five percent of San Diego homeowners owe more on their mortgages than their homes are even worth, according to a new Zillow report.A total of 23,290 homes in the region are in negative equity, meaning a home's value is lower than the balances on the mortgage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Ocean Beach and Point Loma are hoping new surveillance video will help arson investigators find whomever is responsible for a series of fires over the weekend. The video was taken from a yard near one of the fires. It shows a man walking in and out of frame then moments later, neighbors say, another fire stared. The fires all happened early Saturday morning within hours and just miles of each other. Arson investigators are calling the fires suspicious , all of them started in people's backyards. San Diego Police tell 10News they're still working to find out if the fires are related and also looking at the surveillance video to find out if the man in the video is a suspect. Detectives ask that anyone else with video, turn it over to the department. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was shot Sunday outside of a College Area smoke shop, according to police.It wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting, but San Diego Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man had been shot just before 5:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of El Cajon Blvd., outside of Aztec Smoke & Vape Shop.The victim was hit in the leg and chest and taken to a nearby hospital, but their condition was not clear.The area was closed by police for the investigation.10News is monitoring this breaking news.
