SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Friday, San Diegans can help decide the future of the Sports Arena site.The city owns 48 acres around the arena and plans to redevelop the area. The public is being asked to provide their input as well."I think most of us have been over there," says Councilmember Jennifer Campbell. "We enjoy the sports arena and the entertainment that goes on there. But we've also noticed that the neighborhood is in disrepair."RELATED: City plans for overhaul of Midway District's sports arena siteLeases on the land expire in 2020 and the city has already asked developers for their proposals. On Friday, the city will launch a website, sandiego.gov/sportsarenaopenhouse, to let people look at up to four proposals and give feedback."I haven't even seen (the plans) yet," says Campbell. "So I'm really excited that tomorrow I get to take a look at the proposals and see what it looks like."The new Midway/Pacific Highway Community Plan, which passed in 2018, allows for more denser development in the area. It calls for a mixed-use of homes, retail, parks and entertainment. After that, the City will decide how to move forward.But there's another way the public can impact the design. Right now, the City Council is debating putting a measure on the November ballot to remove the 30-foot height restriction from the 900 acres included in the Midway/Pacific Highway community. Campbell and Councilmember Chris Cate proposed the idea, to maximize the opportunity for development.RELATED: Gaslamp Quarter thoroughfare may become a promenade"The water table is so close to the ground, where the sports arena is that if you don't build up in that area, it's very hard to build anything at a 30-foot limit," says Campbell.But, she stresses that the ballot measure won't allow for skyscrapers or high rise buildings. Instead, it will revert the area back to the limits in the City Municipal Code, between 30-100 feet depending on the parcel of land."We don't want really huge buildings," she says. "We won't have skyscrapers, we won't be losing the character of San Diego. It should make it possible to have a beautiful area with housing, jobs, walkways, bike paths, parks, and entertainment complex there in the sports arena area."The Council still has to vote to put the height-limit measure on the ballot.Campbell also says that whichever developer wins the proposal will have to either renovate the current arena or build a new one. 2927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Schools in San Diego County are readying emergency plans in case the coronavirus prompts schools closures like the ones in Washington state.At least a dozen schools in the greater Seattle area were closed Monday after health officials confirmed at least six deaths linked to the virus in that state.The San Diego Unified School District said in addition to cleaning efforts by its custodial staff, it was lining up outside contractors who could “provide large-scale deep-cleaning of classrooms or entire schools should it become necessary.”The County Office of Education said it planned to distribute a template pandemic response plan to all 42 districts soon with guidance on everything from prevention to post-outbreak recovery.“We’re lucky we don’t have any cases of community spread in San Diego County, so we have some time,” said COE spokeswoman Music Watson. “We’re using that time to think through, if we need to close schools, what about e-learning? What about community kitchens?”The Office of Education is encouraging districts to consider a range of “distance learning” options, in the event of longer-term school closures. Those options include issuing photocopies of lesson plans, posting recorded lessons online, and conducting teacher “check-ins” and tutorials by phone or web conferencing.Several districts have sent letters home to parents in recent days encouraging discussions about hygiene and handwashing, including Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista Elementary School District.“We get that people are a little scared and we want to make sure we do as much as we can,” said CVESD spokesman Anthony Millican.Millican said local district have experience responding to viral outbreaks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several women appeared in San Diego County Court to recall the interactions they had with Juan Carlos Cordero, the man they claim raped them. San Diego Police arrested 35-year-old Cordero in March for multiple felony sex crimes beginning in 2015. Police said he would approach intoxicated women at bars or online, take them back to his home, and rape them. One by one, the women came into the courtroom Wednesday, to answer questions at the preliminary hearing. The accusers said admittedly, some of the details of what happened are foggy."I'm not sure," one woman replied. "I honestly don't remember, but I was embarrassed that I didn't remember," said another. "I felt like ... I was drugged," another woman said. One woman said she met Cordero after posting on a singles advertisement on Craigslist. She was hoping for a pleasant interaction but said it turned horrific. She said she did everything Cordero told her to do, fearing for her life."He threatened me with spanks with the belt, a weapon," she said. Another woman said she met Cordero on a dating site when she was 18. She admitted lying to her father about Cordero, saying he was a person she knew. But after drinking a few beers in San Diego County, she said Cordero drove her to his home in Newport Beach. "I don't remember very much until I woke up to him yelling at me that I was being too loud, and that I was like every other girl and that I was going to wake up his neighbors," she recalled.After that interaction, she demanded Cordero drive her back to San Diego. In fear that her parents would scold her, she said she did not tell them what had happened, until a few hours later. On the drive home, she remembered that Cordero punched her face repeatedly."I grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it on the freeway," she said. "He [Cordero] got off at the next exit, and I ran into the Denny's."She then had her father pick her up at the restaurant in San Clemente. The following day, she said she went into a hospital to take a drug and rape kit.Another accuser said last fall, she and Cordero went on what started as a nice first date. But she ended up unconscious and woke up in pain."I noticed welts on the back of my butt, I guess," she said. Tearing up, she said she was too embarrassed to report the incident because the two continued to date. After they broke up, she said she read an article about Cordero and his alleged victims. That is when she decided to go to the police and tell her own story."He choked me until the point where I couldn't breathe," she said. "And I asked him to stop." "And what did he say?" prosecutor Martin Doyle said. "That he could end me right then and no one would know," she replied. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's shifting real-estate market could mean new opportunities for entry-level home buyers.A new study from realestate.com says the rate of appreciation for homes at the lower third of the price range are appreciating at 2.2 percent annually. That's a large drop off from the 10.4 percent price growth those homes saw from 2017 to 2018. “Those homes, priced in the bottom third of the market, have been appreciating the fastest and have seen the least inventory in recent years and price cuts are becoming more common as the balance between buyers and sellers is trending toward evening out," said Skylar Olsen, director of economic research for Zillow Group, which owns realestate.com "That’s not a huge surprise, as annual home-value appreciation has been well above historic norms for some time, and was due to slow back toward normal.”The typical entry level home in San Diego County is now worth 4,500. That's still a hefty price for San Diego renters who are paying an average of about ,000 a month and struggling to save for a down payment. Still, down payment assistance programs are available through the County and San Diego Housing Commission. Additionally, potential buyers can qualify for an F.H.A. loan with as little as 3.5 percent down. And Veterans can buy homes with nothing down through a V.A. loan. Carlos Espinoza and his wife Esther are buying a two-bedroom condo in Rancho Penasquitos for 9,000, the full asking price. They put 12 percent down, which they accumulated by increasing contributions to Carlos's 401(K), then borrowing from that fund. "Save as much as you can, even though sometimes you may feel like it's not enough," Carlos said. "The American Dream is alive again."Rich Kushner, a realtor with Burke Real Estate Consultants, said the most important thing an entry level buyer can do is get pre-approved for a loan. That will cause a seller to take an offer more seriously."Everything's negotiable when you write a contract, but you're going to have a stronger offer if you have a pre-approval letter," Kushner said.
