GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A young woman finally has her class ring back nearly 20 years after losing it. It was found in West Michigan, but she's not even from Michigan."I've been doing this for 10 years, and in those 10 years I found over 115 rings," said Gregg Larabel, who found the ring. You could say Larabel always had a knack for finding things."My dad got us started in 1972 with a little bounty hunter, and I've been metal detecting ever since," Larabel explained. "Then, I come across this Ring Finders site and joined it, and here I am."The Ring Finders is an international organization that prides itself on recovering millions of dollars in lost jewelry. But most importantly, they make sure these priceless items get back to their owners."I've had a couple of ,000 rings. We're still looking for a ,000 ring in Bloomfield Hills in a duck pond," he said.It doesn't matter where or how long ago it was lost, you give the Ring Finders an idea of where your jewelry might be and they'll get to work. That brings us to his latest find on the shores of Beechpoint Christian Camp in Allegan county. While searching for one ring, Larabel and diver Aaron Westrick of Superior Dive Service came across another ring."I found a class ring from 2001. I looked at the inscription on it. It was DeVonia Foster and from Lourdes Lyons High School," Larabel explained. That's Lourdes Lyons High School in Chicago. So, how did the ring end up in West Michigan 20 years later? We caught up with DeVonia Foster."It's funny because I'm a part of the scholarship program at my old Catholic school, and we used to do these camps every year," Foster explained. "We went off to Michigan and Wisconsin and things like that. So, I believe just out there on a camping experience, I lost it."Foster was a former multi-sport athlete who graduated in 2001. "I have the basketball on one side [of the ring], and then I have two track wings on the other," she said. "It was a treat. I'm from a single-parent home, so it was a sacrifice to even get a ring that expensive."Regarding losing the ring, Foster laughed, remembering "it was kind of a bummer, because it's like, 'Oh, I see why [ my mom] didn't buy me nothing expensive.'"Larabel contacted Foster through Facebook and drove three hours to Chicago to personally drop it off."It's funny that Gregg just reached out, and he just lost his wife," Foster mused. "So it just makes me feel like he's a great person to even care about other people when he's going through such a traumatic loss his own self."This story was first reported by Nicole DiDonato at WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan. 2627

HAMPTON, Va. – Slavery in the United States began in Hampton Roads at Fort Monroe in Virginia, once known as Point Comfort, where the first enslaved Africans arrived in 1619.Psychiatrists say the horrors slaves endured in America – severe physical and mental abuse – has a psychological impact on their descendants 401 years later.“Fearfulness, I think, is what's passed on, in addition to the trauma,” said nationally renowned psychiatrist Dr. Dion Metzger. “That fear gets instilled into children because parents are trying to protect their children.”A study in Brain Sciences suggests trauma can be passed down through generations. Their research found “an accumulating amount of evidence of an enduring effect of trauma exposure to be passed to offspring transgenerationally via the epigenetic inheritance mechanism of DNA methylation alterations and has the capacity to change the expression of genes and the metabolome.”Dr. Metzger said it is possible that Black people are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder from what their ancestors endured.“Just because we didn't experience it, us learning about the history or even from family stories, it's the same thing,” she said.Metzger said the outcry in peaceful protests across the country can be therapeutic.“It's not going to be a quick fix, but us telling our stories is one big part of [healing],” said Dr. Metzger, who also encouraged therapy.“A lot of people think in order for you to suffer from PTSD, you have to be a victim,” said Dr. Metzger. “You can still have the same traumatic impact just from watching the video [of George Floyd’s death] and sometimes even greater if you identify with the person. So if you identify with the race of the person, you identify with their gender, you're more likely to have a trauma traumatic impact. So I always remind people that even if you were not there, but you’re watching that video, we're still counting that as a trauma. You watched a person die on camera, so we have to realize that that's traumatic.”This story was originally published by Jessica Larche at WTKR. 2090

HENDERSON, Nev. – Thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump packed an indoor venue in Nevada on Sunday, with no apparent social distancing in place and very few people wore masks. The rally was met with criticism by many, because it was in open defiance of the state’s regulations and the Trump administration’s own coronavirus pandemic health guidelines. The state’s Democratic governor, Steve Sisolak, slammed Trump for his rally. In a statement, he said the president’s “reckless and selfish actions” put countless lives in danger.“The president appears to have forgotten that this country is still in the middle of a global pandemic,” said Sisolak. “Early on in this crisis, when it came time to exhibit real leadership and make difficult decisions to protect the American people, he failed to develop a unified national response strategy. To put it bluntly: he didn’t have the guts to make tough choices – he left that to governors and the states. Now he’s decided he doesn’t have to respect our state’s laws. As usual, he doesn’t believe the rules apply to him.”During his rally, the president encouraged people to vote and took a jab at the state's AB 4 law, which requires every registered voter in the state to receive a mail-in ballot while also requiring day-of polling locations to be open."You can send your ballot and then you have to check your ballots counted because they might not count your ballot in this state," said Trump. "They might not count your ballot."Both of Trump's voting-related claims are not substantiated. The president also touted the pre-pandemic economy and unemployment numbers."Before the virus, we quickly achieved the lowest unemployment rate in Nevada's history and we'll soon be there again," he said. While COVID-19 cases are on a downward trend in Nevada, the state's unemployment remains one of the highest in the country. Also Sunday night, Democratic nominee Joe Biden released a new ad alleging the president called fallen war veterans suckers and losers remark the president has repeatedly denied making.Joe Biden is taking a very different approach to the campaign than Trump, only recently beginning to make public appearances, wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. The Democratic nominee slammed the president saying, "Nevadans don't need more bluster from the president, and don't need his reckless rallies."This story was originally published by staff at KTNV. 2438
