SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans welcomed spring Tuesday as a storm raced towards Southern California. It's expected to be a pleasant and warm day with a mix of sun and clouds for San Diego County, but this is merely the calm before the storm. The latest predictions from the National Weather Service show that the storm could dump anywhere between a quarter of an inch to as much as three inches of rain in parts of the county. RELATED: Mandatory evacuations issued for Santa Barbara County ahead of winter stormAs far as timing, the first storm of the spring should fall over San Diego Thursday afternoon into the overnight hours. The public can get free sand and bags, or free bags, at locations around San Diego County. They should call ahead to check availability and bring a shovel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is making the push for top talent and to dispel any lingering assumptions the region can't compete with larger hubs around the country. The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Tuesday launched their campaign "San Diego: Life. Changing.," an effort to attract and retain talent centered around STEM - science, technology, engineering, art, and math.RELATED: Could San Diego be a possible location for Amazon HQ2?"We’re not Boston, New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles. And we don’t want to be," Mark Cafferty, San Diego Regional EDC president, said. "This campaign was developed by San Diego ... and for San Diego to communicate the unique opportunities and experiences our region offers to companies and employees alike."Officials unveiled the campaign at Tuesday's San Diego Padres game before about 15,000 in attendance. The privately-funded campaign hopes to elevate the region's standing and dispel the perception of limited opportunities in the region and is set to run through 2019, according to San Diego Regional EDC.The Regional EDC said it's critical to attract talent that appeals to global companies to the area for San Diego to remain competitive.RELATED: Group launches to help women start businesses"The San Diego: Life. Changing. campaign reinforces the message we’ve been telling candidates for years: San Diego is a dynamic, rich environment with incredible opportunities to have both the career and life you want, that you just don't find in other regions," Melinda Del Toro, a senior vice president at San Diego Brand Alliance, said.Nearly 100 companies have signed onto San Diego Brand Alliance, including Illumina, Human Longevity, Inc., Sony, Qualcomm, and Intuit, which will serve as unofficial advisors to the campaign.RELATED: Report: San Diego universities among best in U.S.Over the next two years, Regional EDC hopes to build out the campaign, including online, and partner with more San Diego organizations to focus on specific markets around the country. 2069

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said Friday a new review of the death of Rebecca Zahau, whose body was found hanging at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011, found no evidence she "died at the hands of another," and the department will not reopen the case. The review, conducted this year, involved officials from the Sheriff's Major Crimes Division, Sheriff's Homicide Detail, Sheriff's Crime Lab, County Medical Examiner's Office and Coronado Police Department who were not part of the original investigation. The team looked at the case with "fresh eyes", Gore said.Zahau, 32, was the girlfriend of the mansion’s owner, Arizona pharmaceutical CEO Jonah Shacknai. Two days before her death, Zahau had been babysitting Shacknai’s 6-year-old son Max when he was seriously injured in a fall down the home’s staircase. Max died from his injuries five days later.WATCH LIVE: Sheriff's news conference at 1 p.m. 941

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Congresswoman Susan Davis wants the Navy to analyze whether there is a national security threat related to sewage spills along the US-Mexico border. The military is set to build a billion Navy SEAL training facility near Imperial Beach. The area has experienced 160 days of sewage spill closures to parts of its shoreline over the past three years, Davis reports.Davis wants a Navy assessment of how construction and future training at the site could be affected by the spills. “We need a whole of government solution to the sewage spills,” said Davis. “We know the environmental and economic impact these spills have. What we don’t know, with the Navy planning to stage training operations in potentially contaminated waters, are the national security concerns. The Navy should take a look at this and coordinate with relevant agencies to assess what can be done to prevent future spills.”Davis, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, wants to include language in this year’s defense bill to get a report from the Navy on the matter.“The Navy’s coastal campus will be vital for national security,” Davis said. “The last thing we want is our elite Navy SEALs training in water contaminated with sewage. Nor do we want training operations delayed.”Davis is requesting the Navy work with the Department of State, the EPA, the Department of Homeland Security, the International Boundary Water Commission, and the Department of the Interior to assess how national security will be affected by future spills and how they can be prevented. 1598
