BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator said Wednesday that China will promote social exchanges with Myanmar to boost bilateral ties.     "We attach importance to and support friendly exchanges and cooperation between social groups and organizations in China and Myanmar, which will contribute to the development of bilateral ties," said Zhou Tienong, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in a meeting with a delegation from a government-supported organization from Myanmar.     Zhou, also president of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, briefed the eight-member delegation on China's political and economic situation, its measures in tackling the global downturn and pledged to boost economic and trade cooperation with the international community, including Myanmar. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China still has a long way to go in upgrading industrial processes, although it had managed to secure economic stabilization and was moving upwards, Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank, said Thursday.     "China has achieved great success in bolstering the economy's growth through a series of plans to stimulate it, but it should also continue making efforts to upgrade its industries, as well as its energy-saving and pollution reduction measures, to sustain development," Zhuang said.     China's economic growth had slowed during the global downturn, but expanded 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009 year on year after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.     Zhuang said the improvement of China's industrial structure and increasing energy conservation were of critical importance to the world.     Government figures show the amount of energy consumed in China to produce a unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 3.35 percent year on year in the first half. The decrease compares with 2.88 percent for the first half of last year.     China should also promote domestic consumption to boost economic growth, he said.

ZHENGZHOU, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities began Sunday relocating the first batch of rural residents totaling 10,600 in central Henan Province to make way for one of the three routes of the country's massive South-to-North Water Diversion Project.     The residents in Xichuan County will move to 10 newly-built villages in 10 different counties of Henan, and the project is expected to be finished by Sept. 10, according to the relocation plan designed by the Henan Provincial Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.     They need to move away from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, a water control pivot along the middle route of the diversion project, as the reservoir dam is being heightened to hold more water and ensure water supply for the diversion project, the plan said.     "I am happy to move to a new, larger home," said Zhang Faxiang, whose family was transferred to a new village in Xuchang County Sunday.     He said concrete roads were built in the new village, which are not commonly seen in central and western Chinese villages. The local government has provided tap water, methane gas for them and built primary schools, recreation centers and other public facilities.     According to the relocation plan, more than 320,000 people in Henan and neighboring Hubei Province will move away from the Danjiangkou Reservoir. Hubei authorities plan to relocate 12,000 people this year.     The South-to-North Water Diversion Project, one of the world's largest water project, is an effort to divert water from China's rainy south to its dry north. It has three routes: the eastern, middle and western ones.     The State Council, China's highest governing body, approved the ambitious project in December 2002 after a half century of debate.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, said Saturday it is drafting a development plan for the emerging industry of energy conservation and environmental protection.     The commission said in a statement posted on its Web site that the move is aimed to counter the impact of the global financial crisis by "accelerating the cultivation of emerging industries and aiming at a commanding height in future economic competition."     The development plan on the sector covers energy conservation, sustainable use of resources and environmental protection, according to the statement.     Technologies, equipment, products and services concerning energy conservation and environmental protection would be involved in the plan, it said.     The commission revealed no further details on the plan.
