SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people have been arrested for the fire that destroyed a Chase Bank during unrest in La Mesa last May.FBI San Diego said 19-year-old Alexander Jacob King and 33-year-old Ricky Bernard Cooper were arrested on Monday and charged with arson of a structure in connection with the bank fire. King was also charged with one count of looting and Cooper is facing four separate counts of looting related to various La Mesa businesses.On May 30, FBI investigators say the fire was set at the Chase Bank at 4791 Spring St., causing extensive damage to the building. Since the fire, investigators from La Mesa Police, San Diego Police, and the San Diego FBI have been piecing together evidence leading to Monday's arrests."While peaceful protest is a right protected by the U.S. Constitution and a time-honored tradition in our country, violent criminal activity, including arson and looting, will not be tolerated," the FBI said in a release announcing the arrests.Last May, demonstrators marched through the city and gathered outside of La Mesa Police Department to protest the arrest of an African American man by a white LMPD officer caught on video. The protest followed a week of demonstrations around the country stemming from the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody.Later that night, protests turned violent as rioters set several fires, and damaged and looted businesses. 1422

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Sheriffs deputies detained a man in Lemon Grove this afternoon, who may be connected to an early morning carjacking.It was supposed to be a routine check-up. A 76-year-old woman was going in for a 7 a.m. eye appointment at a medical office on the 3900 block of Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest.But she never made it.“The man with the gun pointed it at the woman, so I guess it was just taking place, and she scrammed out of there and called 911," a woman named Nancy said. She said her friend witnessed the carjacking happen from across the parking structure.San Diego Police detectives said a shorter, thin, Hispanic man with short hair approached the grandmother, pointed a gun at her face, stole her purse, and drove off in her gray Mazda 3.Officers notified all nearby agencies to search for that car.Then at 9:45 a.m., the car was found on Lemon Grove Way in Lemon Grove. But it was in bad condition. “A few hours later, the Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a hit-and-run that involved that very vehicle, the victim’s vehicle," Lt. Andrew Hoffman of the San Diego Police Department said. Witnesses said the driver of the Mazda 3 hit a parked red Honda Civic, veered into a pole, then ran away.For two hours, investigators set up a perimeter of the area and used a helicopter to look for the car-jacking and hit-and-run suspect. But they came up empty.Then at 2 p.m., detectives did a secondary search of the apartment complex.That is when one of the deputies recognized a wanted man and arrested him. “I guess the guy walked out of the apartment, the other officer saw him from the back of the cop car, must have recognized him," witness Floyd Bloom said. "So that’s when they yanked him out of the car. But he reached for the officer’s taser and his gun. And so they tased him.”San Diego sheriffs deputies said the man they detained is a tall, thin Caucasian man, who was possibly wearing a disguise.Detectives said a curly, black-haired wig fell off of the man during his struggle with police. They also found a rifle and ammunition in the back of his trunk.San Diego County Sheriffs deputies detained the man, then handed him over to the San Diego Police department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two weeks after their son was killed, the parents of Alexander Mazin spoke to 10News for the first time about the brutal attack.Penelope and Jeffrey Mazin say their son left for the 24 Hour Fitness gym on Midway Dr. around 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2018.“I said 'I love you' and I kissed him on his little fuzzy beard,” remembered his mom, “and he walked out the door. I’m glad I saw him that morning.”He was scheduled to meet with his dad at noon, but by 12:05, his parents were already worried. He was never late.They started calling hospitals and police stations. Little did they know, officers were already searching for him.“Two plainclothes detectives in black cars pulled up and my heart sunk because I knew right then and there something horrible must have happened,” said Jeffrey.The suspect in the case has been identified as Ernesto Castellanos.The Mazins say Castellanos was in a previous relationship with their son’s girlfriend. They say Alexander had been dating the woman for about three months but kept their relationship somewhat private.There were warning signs. Two weeks before the killing, they say Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a 24 Hour Fitness.Castellanos’ whereabouts are unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With another round of coronavirus closures set to begin Saturday, several San Diego County businesses are fighting back legally.Despite the change to California's most restrictive reopening tier, Pacers and Cheetah's adult entertainment clubs won't be shutting their doors. Last week, the businesses won a suit against the county and a judge granted a temporary restraining order allowing them to stay open.An attorney representing Pacers told ABC 10News their argument centered around first amendment rights, and adult entertainment is a protected form of expression. It's unclear if that argument could apply to other businesses, but he added that there are other legal paths to challenging the closures.Another suit has also been filed by a group of San Diego County gyms, but no decision has been made yet.San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar says the legal actions are understandable given the tough situation."Now we're threatening the workforce again we're threatening the closure of these businesses again and I think this is entirely unsustainable for our business community," Gaspar said. Gaspar added that the county has appealed to the state to avoid the tier change, asking them to take into account other factors, including where a majority of outbreaks are linked to and the county's hospitalization rate."At this point in time our hospitalizations for COVID-19 are at 6%, there's a lot of capacity left in our hospitals system," Gaspar said.On the heels of the successful adult entertainment lawsuit, Gaspar says it stands to reason other businesses could do the same."You could make the case as a restaurant owner as a gym owner that our data does not support this decision to close down and closing down will create undue financial harm to these businesses it has already I think they have a strong compelling case," she said.Although individual businesses are fighting back legally, Gaspar says at this point, it doesn't appear the county has plans to file suit against the state."So far there hasn't been anything that's come out of those closed sessions to suggest that the County of San Diego will proceed along that route," said Gaspar. 2192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the CDC has issued guidance for the cruise ship industry to reopen during the pandemic, the Port of San Diego says it's too soon to tell when the industry would restart locally.Friday, the CDC urged a "phased approach" to reopening the industry that has been largely shuttered since April following a no-sail order due to the pandemic. The agency says cruise lines will need to test safety protocols via mock voyages with volunteers before they can host passengers. Still, the order was the first movement on cruise ships since the CDC issued its no-sail order in March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego cruise business representative, told ABC 10News that the port will have to coordinate with cruise companies on what their next steps will be."It is too soon to say how soon sailing could resume in San Diego. Our next steps will be to coordinate with Holland America and Carnival on their plans, as they are the first few cruises on our schedule. Currently, our first scheduled cruise is Dec. 19 with Holland America’s Koningsdam.
