The lava flow continued to advance several hours after the fissure eruption diminished, the USGS said.In another video (attached to this article), a lava flow can be seen moving on Makamae Street in the Leilani Estates around 9:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, May 6.By Sunday night, at least 10 fissures had opened, and 26 homes had been destroyed, CNN reports. The active venting of lava and hazardous fumes was ongoing.As of Monday morning, the USGS still had a current volcano alert level of "warning" in effect, and the code color is orange."Residents should remain informed and heed Hawaii County Civil Defense closures, warnings, and messages," the USGS website states. The Senate is expected to vote on an economic relief package this week and while it has little chance of passing the House, it is sending a very clear message to airlines: help may not be coming. United Airlines and American Airlines have both threatened thousands of their employees with layoffs if government assistance doesn't come before October 1. October 1 is the first date airlines that took bailout money from earlier this year can layoff workers under the terms set by Congress. United is looking at cutting around 16,000 employees while American is slashing around 19,000 workers. Southwest and Delta, notably, are not laying off workers after offering buyouts to many workers. For weeks, airlines and unions were holding out hope lawmakers would pass a bill after returning from their August recess. At one point back in May, 150 residents here were infected with COVID-19. By the time the outbreak was over, 50 seniors had died from complications related to COVID-19.The staff was heartbroken.“What people had to see, it was very hard,” Dubois recalled as she held back tears. “These staff members stayed and held patients' hands; they never died alone.”Limiting the virus spread has been hard. Months later, only two people in the nursing home now have COVID-19. That’s thanks in part to a no-visitor policy here and across the country in other senior care facilities. Isolating for safety though has also come at the expense of senior’s mental health.“A lot of them don’t get to talk to people all day. Some have families, and some don’t,” said Tammie Richard, who also works as a nurse at Hillsborough.Through much of the spring, Richard noticed how depressed residents were getting without haircuts. Because of the virus, the facility’s beauty parlor had to be been shut down. Richard, who's also a cosmetologist, decided to take her show on the road.Or at least down the hallway.She found a way to do trims, cuts, and color safely. While wearing PPE and sanitizing her equipment, she able to cut residents' hair one room at a time.“The touching, touching, and talking to somebody, the hour, the half-hour they love getting their hair done. I just want them to feel comfortable, relaxed, and happy,” Richard added.With residents here cut off from the outside world, a simple cut is doing wonders for these seniors’ mental health. Because Richard is a licensed nursing assistant, she's considered essential. She and another cosmetologist on staff can check the resident’s vital signs, while at the same time taking a little more off the top.Nursing homes nationwide are now adopting similar ideas.“It makes them not feel as depressed. It makes them have a different level of comfort. It makes them feel normal again,” Richard said about the cuts she’s been giving.Not only is she keeping seniors looking young, but she's also helping them stay young at heart. 2343

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to warn against eating any romaine lettuce harvested from the central Coastal growing regions of Northern and Central California amid a multistate outbreak of E. coli illnesses linked to romaine lettuce. The agency also reported Thursday that nine additional people have been reported ill since November 26.Now, 52 people have been infected with E. coli in this outbreak, which was announced in October, according to the CDC.Illnesses have been reported in 15 states: California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.Nineteen people have been hospitalized, including two who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.
