Spotify confirmed to Billboard Thursday that it will no longer promote R. Kelly's music on its editorial and algorithm-based playlists due to sexual misconduct allegations against the singer. In a statement to Billboard, the streaming service said it would no longer actively promote the singer's music under a new "Hateful Conduct" policy."We don’t censor content because of an artist’s or creator’s behavior, but we want our editorial decisions -- what we choose to program -- to reflect our values. When an artist or creator does something that is especially harmful or hateful, it may affect the ways we work with or support that artist or creator," Spotify's policy states.Spotify users can still access Kelly's music by going directly to his page, and users can still add his music to playlists they curate themselves.Kelly has been accused of sexual assault and statutory rape multiple times over the past 20 years. In 2001, a sex tape emerged that prosecutors alleged featured Kelly and an underaged girl. Kelly was found not guilty on 14 counts of child pornography in 2008 in connection with the tape.A number of women came told BuzzFeed in 2017 that Kelly was "brainwashing" victims into joining a sex "cult." Recently two more women came forward to BuzzFeed with similar allegations. Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. Follow him on Twitter @alexhider. 1415

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis announced Florida will enter Phase 3 of reopening the state's economy.Effective immediately, Gov. DeSantis announced Friday in his press conference in St. Petersburg that restaurants and select businesses can operate at full capacity.Phase 3 of Gov. DeSantis' "SAFE. SMART. STEP-BY-STEP PLAN" ensures Floridians that restaurants can reopen at a minimum 50% capacity if the local government prohibits them from reopening at full capacity.“Everybody has an opportunity and the right to work. Every business has the right to operate,” said Gov. DeSantis said. With Phase 3, Gov. DeSantis said he will no longer place limitations on businesses due to coronavirus concerns."There will not be limitations from the state of Florida," Gov. DeSantis said. The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) President and CEO Carol Dover said the pandemic has caused 336,000 people in the industry to lose their jobs.“The effects on the local and state economy have been significant. I want to thank Governor DeSantis and DBPR Secretary Halsey Beshears for their support as we have navigated this unprecedented time and for allowing us the opportunity to get back to work,” Dover said in a press release. The announcement comes just days after bars and breweries were allowed to reopen in Florida.Florida's top business regulator Halsey Beshears announced just 15 days ago that the state is rescinding Executive Order 20-09. The executive order, issued earlier in the summer, suspended bars from serving alcohol on their premises.Gov. DeSantis said if the local government wants to keep businesses from reopening at a minimum of 50% capacity, they must make their case to the state on why they want to place the restrictions and identify the costs involved.Gov. DeSantis also announced on Friday that he’s suspending all fines and penalties against people accused of not wearing masks.FRLA is expected to unveil Gov. DeSantis' executive order on rolling out Phase 3 sometime Friday night. This story was first reported by KJ Hiramoto at WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 2102

Some workers have saved a ton of money during the pandemic thanks to many not having to commute. In fact, it’s reported that the total savings by Americans not having to commute is upwards of billion. On average, workers across the country usually have a work commute of about 50 minutes.“I don’t miss the commute at all,” said Raymond Kelly, who is now working from home. "It was a little drive on both sides and a boat in the middle.”Kelly is an engineer in Washington state, and for eight years, his commute was far longer than the average workers’.Every day, he commuted from Poulsbo, Washington to Muckilteo. First, he drove 30 minutes to park and catch a ferry in Kingston, Washington. After the 30 minutes ferry ride, he got into his second car parked on that side of the Puget Sound and then drove another 30 minutes to finally get to his job. In total, his commute was about three to four hours a day. However, since his company began allowing people to work from home in March, his commute is now just two or three minutes. It’s the walk from his bed to a small office he created in his home.“I think it has been huge. It is almost like getting a piece of life back,” said Kelly.Kelly is saving at least 0 a month not commuting to work, and most Americans are seeing a similar savings. A survey done by a company called Upwork shows the average American has saved about ,000 since March by also not commuting to work.“The total savings since March comes out to billion,” said Adam Ozimek, the chief economist at Upwork.“In the long run, the money you save on this is the money you spend elsewhere,” added Ozimek. "What we know from the survey is it consumers are generally spending more online. They are spending more at grocery stores. They are spending more those way and also are saving more."A new poll by the National Opinion Research Center shows 45 percent of Americans are putting the money saved on commuting into their personal savings, while 26 percent are paying down debt at a faster rate than Americans did pre-pandemic.Long term, as more employers signal remote work as a more permanent way to work, economists believe the money saved commuting will be put towards things like people eating out more and traveling. Both would help struggling sectors of the economy and industries struggling the most right now.As for Kelly, he’s been spending his commute savings on home-improvement projects. 2437

Seventeen black women made history Tuesday night in winning judicial seats in Harris County, Texas. The 17 Democratic candidates were elected under a campaign they called "Black Girl Magic Texas," hoping to be the largest number of black women elected judges in Harris County.Harris County, which includes Houston, is the largest county in the state. Some of the women celebrated their success on social media."This election is still sinking in," LaShawn Williams, judge-elect for one of the county civil courts at law, wrote on Facebook. "I am speechless and overjoyed by all of your kind words and powerful actions to help us make a court system which ensures that everyone will be heard."Of the 17 history-making women, Shannon Baldwin will be the county's first openly LGBTQ African-American judge after winning her race, according to Out Smart magazine.Tuesday's midterm elections were a historic night for female candidates, more of whom will be serving in Congress than ever before.Latosha Lewis Payne, judge-elect for the 55th Civil Judicial District, told a local Houston TV station that having a diverse bench would provide "equal opportunity for justice -- regardless of who you are.""I think that having an African-American judge or having a female judge, those are the kinds of things we bring to the bench, and we bring an understanding of a person who may come from that similar background," Payne said.As of Friday, CNN projected that at least 100 women would win US House seats, with 35 women newly elected to the House and 65 female incumbents.CNN projected as of Friday that 12 women would win Senate seats, with two newly elected women joining 10 female incumbents.
