ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - Nearly three-dozen cats were taken in by the San Diego Humane Society after they were left behind inside a condominium in Escondido last month, the agency announced Wednesday.The property manager of a condominium complex in the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue called the group on Oct. 22 to report that one of the condo's tenants had abandoned the cats after being evicted, according to the SDHS.Officers from the SDHS' law enforcement division responded to the home and found 31 cats living in "unsanitary conditions" inside the unit, SDHS spokeswoman Nina Thompson said.The cats were taken to SDHS campuses in Escondido and Oceanside for extensive medical exams, Thompson said. One cat had to be euthanized and a majority of the cats were found to be suffering from numerous medical conditions, including upper respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections and heart murmurs.The remaining 30 cats underwent more than three weeks of intensive medical care and were in the process of being transferred to SDHS' rescue partner Love Your Feral Felines for recovery, Thompson said.The Humane Society encourages the public to report animal emergencies, cruelty or neglect by calling 619-299-7012. 1234

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors in Encinitas are warning people about the dangers of the Sago Palm after two dogs on the same street passed away from sago poisoning.Ronnie Steinau says her dog, Luna, died within 24 hours of eating some seeds from a Sago Palm."She was the happiest, tail wagging, loved everyone and 'she's the kind of dog that everyone loved because she was so sweet," Steinau says. "We had her for about a year. We miss her."After posting about Luna on social media groups, Steinau learned a neighbor had a similar experience."We had no idea there was something so deadly all around us," says Alissa Dalaut.Dalaut says her dog Saber ate some sago palm seeds in December and died a few days afterward, despite aggressive treatment from her vet."We felt horrible, and we wished we would have known how toxic and how fatal and how dangerous these plants are," says Dalaut.According to PetMD.com, the sago palm contains a toxin called Cycasin. It can cause severe liver damage. Other symptoms of sago poisoning include:VomitingBlood in fecesBloody diarrheaIcterus (yellow coloration of skin and gums)Increased thirstIncreased urineBruisingBleeding easily (coagulopathy, DIC)Neurological signs such as depression, circling, paralysis, seizures, comaDeathThe toxin is found in the sago roots, seeds and leaves. She has since had them all removed. Steinau also had a sago palm removed from her backyard and has plans to cut down another on her porch.Now the two women are warning others of the dangers in their neighborhood."If you have them in your yard and you have children or pets, you're asking for trouble," says Steinau.Steinau would also like nurseries to do a better job of telling people about the dangers associated with sago palms and other trees when they're sold. "It comes from Aztec traditions where way back hundreds of years ago, they would celebrate for a whole month in the summer, and they would honor their deceased loved ones. And when the Catholic church showed up in Mexico, they brought with them all their holidays and traditions. And so when the Catholic church met the Aztec traditions, they came together and Day of the Dead was born.”Families of Mexican and Guatemalan descent create an altar for their ancestors. They thoughtfully arrange photos of their loved ones who have passed and surrounding the photos, they place their relative’s favorite foods, along with other items that honor what they loved and did while on Earth.Even though they happen around the same time, el Día de los Muertos should not be confused with Halloween.“Day of the Dead is a celebration of joy and welcoming where Halloween -- all of those skeletons, ghosts and ghouls -- those are spirits that you want to scare away," Macca said. "So, Halloween those are scary things, but in Day of the Dead, they’re your friends and your family and you want to see them and bring them back.”“I can talk to them, sing to them and argue with them,” Valenzuela Moreno said.Valenzuela Moreno says she feels a full range of emotions as she spends time with her mother, brothers and sisters who have passed.“Sadness, happiness, rejoice... there are times to pray, to cry, because memories come back of all of them.”Memories we have of relatives and the passion that emerges from them are things we all have in common. Macca says that’s likely the reason why the holiday has now entered mainstream culture.“I think a lot of people who don’t come from a latinx tradition who don’t have Mexican or Guatemalan heritage are now starting to embrace day of the dead because it’s such a wonderful way to remember your loved ones,” Macca said.Valenzuela Moreno says she welcomes any and all cultures to adopt the tradition she holds near and dear to her heart.“The community needs to embrace this kind of celebration and feel part of it. Experts say a scammer cloning a phone number can happen to anyone and a Nebraska woman says her number is being used to try and solicit others.Caller ID "spoofing" is used to disguise someone's identity and is usually to trick a person into giving away personal information for criminal activity, or money. Now, many in Omaha are seeing local numbers including the same prefix show up on a call.Evy Akpan says recently she was receiving multiple calls a day from people who said she had called them several times when she hadn't called them at all."If I'm trying to live my life, and I'm getting phone calls throughout the day, and my phone is constantly ringing for a scam purpose, it's frustrating," Akpan said. "And also just receiving these voicemails of upset people chewing me a new one, and I'm like, 'I'm not calling you!' "The Better Business Bureau of Nebraska, SW Iowa, South Dakota, and Great Plains Kansas said scammers usually only clone a person's number for 24-48 hours then move on to new ones. The Federal Communications Commission says it's best not to pick up a call from an unknown number because if you do, criminals will know your number is active."Really, it's important not to trust the caller ID. The fact that it says it's coming from an area code that we're not familiar with doesn't really mean anything these days," said Jim Hegarty, CEO of the BBB Nebraska.The FCC adds that if your number's been spoofed, there's not much you can do other than change your voicemail to let people know of the situation. 1557

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 60-year-old man died after crashing his motorcycle in Fallbrook early Sunday morning, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the man was driving east on Mission Road when he began to weave before striking a curb and tumbling down an embankment just after 1 a.m. According to CHP, someone gave the man CPR, but he died at the scene. CHP says the San Diego County Medical Examiner will determine whether or not a medical condition played a role in the crash. 505
