They already had all their dining outside.When they made that move, they were ahead of the forecast, thinking to add a waterproof custom made patio cover and heat lamps."Through the generosity of our neighbors, we were actually able to do it and get ready for winter coming," Marie said.She said a couple of loyal customers even came and sat under their new patio in the rain last weekend.Inside their cafe has been redesigned into an organic market, filled with produce, specialty cheeses, Italian sauces, beer, wine, breakfast items. They also have items for those with dietary restrictions and gifts for the holiday season.The market helps them with the overhead, keeping the business afloat.On top of it all, they're balancing distance learning with their two boys and charity work, feeding families in need in North County. "Food insecurity even before the pandemic was a huge thing on our minds and something that with the pandemic we want to keep going," Jamie said.They've donated 28,000 meals since April and hope to fund-raise through the end of the year to supply more families more food as the holidays grow closer. 2132

(AP) -- A North Carolina man who won a million lottery prize in 2017 has been arrested on a murder charge in the killing of a woman whose body was found at a hotel.The Shallotte Police Department charged 52-year-old Michael Todd Hill of Leland, with murder after the body of 23-year-old Keonna Graham was found Monday in a hotel room in the Brunswick County town.WECT-TV reports that Hill won million from an Ultimate Millions scratch-off ticket in August 2017.A cousin of Graham described her as as a generous, loving and adventurous young woman who enjoyed hiking and bicycle rides. 616

SPRINGDALE, Utah — A woman who was missing for nearly two weeks has been found safe in Zion National Park.Authorities had been searching for 38-year-old Holly Suzanne Courtier after she didn't show up for her scheduled pickup in the park by a private shuttle on Oct. 6.She was found Sunday by search and rescue crews after rangers received a "credible tip" that a visitor had seen her in the park, the National Parks Service said. She has since been reunited with her family.“We are overjoyed that she was found safely today," Courtier's family said in a statement. "We would like to thank the rangers and search teams who relentlessly looked for her day and night and never gave up hope. We are also so grateful to the countless volunteers who were generous with their time, resources and support. This wouldn’t have been possible without the network of people who came together.”Courtier's daughter told CNN that her mother injured her head while hiking and became disoriented. "She injured her head on a tree," Chambers told CNN. "She was very disoriented as a result and thankfully ended up near a water source -- a river bed. Some motorcycles for the Tempe Police Department are now equipped with upright mounts for semi-automatic rifles.Sergeant Ronald Elcock said the department tested the mounts last year and decided to install them on eight of its motorcycles.In a high-risk situation, Elcock says motorcycles can usually get to a scene much quicker than patrol cars.However, until now, motorcycle officers were only armed with handguns.Elcock said that's been a growing problem, because criminals are using more high-powered rifles and weaponry."We don’t want to go into those situations where we aren’t able to keep the public safe,” said Elcock.Even though the AR-15s are highly visible on the back of the motorcycles, Elcock says they are secured with special technology.“There's a locking mechanism that would prevent anyone, except for the operator, to be able to get at the equipment,” said Alcock.Some worry about the militaristic look of the AR-15s mounted on the back of the motorcycles.“There are people that may be scared to see it,” said Elcock. "However when we explain to them the reason why we have it I think it puts them a little bit more at ease." 1153

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, hate-related incidents directed towards Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have risen drastically.According to Stop Asian-American and Pacific Islander Hate, an advocacy group working to raise awareness about the issue, 2,538 have been documented since March.The group, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says incidents are self-reported, as well as taken from news reports across the country.“Surveys have shown that over three-quarters of Asian Americans are aware and fear racial bias at the moment,” said Russell Jeung, a professor of Asian-American Studies at San Francisco State University, who tracks the incidents for Stop AAPI Hate.Jeung says his research has found the President Donald Trump’s use of the term “China virus” is having a direct impact on the harassment, as 30 percent of the incidents reported say the language used has mirrored the president’s.“We’re seeing vulnerable populations being targeted,” said Jeung. “Women are harassed 2.4 times more than men. Youth make up 14 percent of our cases so that means there’s a lot of school bullying going on, a lot of online cyber-bullying."“We’ve seen incidents of spitting, vandalism, hostility towards Asian-owned businesses during this time,” said Jay Cheng, a member of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.Two months ago four Asian-owned businesses were vandalized and robbed in the city’s Outer Balboa neighborhood, one of San Francisco’s most diverse areas. Windows were smashed and derogatory language was written on several storefronts.“San Francisco is, in many ways, the capital of Asian-America, so this is the last place you would expect to see that type of racism,” said Cheng.Jeung says in Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities across the country, the harassment causes apprehension and pain knowing once an illness hits, these communities get blamed.“It’s not unexpected. I was ready, but I find the hate palpable and horrific,” said Jeung. “It’s just really sad to me that people are so angry, so fearful, and that they’re scapegoating other people for the pandemic rather than blaming it as a natural virus.”Jeung says the way forward is recognizing that words matter. He says a group similar to Stop AAPI Hate based in Australia has reported cases of Anti-Asian and Pacific Islander harassment that mirrors President’s Trump use of the term “China virus."“This November, there is going to be a very clear statement about whether or not this language, this type of attitude, is acceptable or not,” said Cheng. 2556
