SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes. The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. Students were required to think critically about the way public transit shapes our communities.''The contest comes from a partnership between MTS, Coca-Cola Refreshments of San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education. Each applicant had to be a county resident and attend a county high school to be eligible. 1136

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County students' performance on standardized tests in English and math mostly held steady from the previous year, according to scores released Wednesday by the California Department of Education. The performance of San Diego County students on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests generally surpassed that of students statewide, according to the department. The CAASPP tests were administered in the spring to more than 3 million students across the state in grades 3-8 and 11. In San Diego County, 26.45% of the more than 250,000 students who took the tests exceeded the state standard in English, up slightly from 25.79 percent the previous year. According to the state, 30.1% met the standard, down slightly from 30.46% last year; 20.89% ``nearly'' met the standard, down slightly from 20.93% last year; and 22.55% failed to meet it, down from 22.82% the previous year. In math, 23.45% exceeded the standard, 21.6% met it, 24.84% nearly met it and 30.12% failed to meet it. The percentages from the previous year were 22.52%, 21.76%, 25.37% and 30.36%, respectively. Statewide, 22.23% exceeded the standard in English, while 28.64% met it, 22.4% nearly met it and 26.73% failed to meet it. In math, 19.69% exceeded the standard, 20.04% met it, 25.41% nearly met it and 34.86% failed to meet it. The statewide scores were all also moderately improved from the previous year. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond acknowledged the overall improvement, but said he was concerned that gains were less consistent in later grades of 7, 8 and 11, while performance continues to lag among some students of color. ``Disparities between students of color and their white and Asian peers continue from year to year and demonstrate the importance of our priority initiative of closing the achievement gap,'' Thurmond said in a statement. ``Education equity should mean equity for all students and right now, we are not there. All students should have an equal opportunity to succeed academically and enter the workforce prepared with the needed skills to compete in the industries that drive our state forward.'' 2188

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City Council will be asked Tuesday to rename what had been Qualcomm Stadium to SDCCU Stadium, with San Diego County Credit Union bidding 0,000 for the naming rights, according to documents made available Thursday. The credit union recently took over as the primary sponsor of the Holiday Bowl college football game that's held in the stadium. The agreement, if approved, would run to the end of next year. While stadium naming rights typically run into the millions of dollars, city officials didn't anticipate receiving that kind of money because of the short term of the deal. Municipal coffers would net 5,000 from the proposed agreement, according to a staff report.RELATED: Deadline hits to submit naming rights bids for Qualcomm StadiumIn its proposal, SDCCU said it would work to boost attendance at stadium events. The company has a history of heavily promoting events it sponsors. Now that the Chargers are playing in Los Angeles County, city officials envision closing the aging, money-losing stadium after the 2018 college season. San Diego State University officials are pushing for an extension in order to build a new home for the Aztecs. The city contracted with Fox Sports College Properties to find an interested party for the naming rights.RELATED: City of San Diego committee considers possibilities for Qualcomm StadiumSDCCU was one of four bidders. The others were Gemini Sports Group, a Phoenix company that handles sponsorships and naming rights; Mitek, a San Diego- based mobile technology firm; and Traction Video, a San Diego video production firm. 1611

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Blood Bank reached out to the public Tuesday asking for blood donations amid the coronavirus pandemic. The fast-spreading respiratory illness has resulted in school closures and work-from-home policies throughout San Diego County, forcing the bank to cancel blood drives. The San Diego Blood Bank collects more than half of its blood supply on bloodmobiles stationed at these blood drives, according to the company.RELATED: Red Cross pleads for blood donations amid severe shortage due to COVID-19 cancellations"The U.S. is on the verge of a serious blood shortage that will lead to blood rationing and triage," said David Wellis, CEO of San Diego Blood Bank. "We need healthy people to come out to donate immediately. Supplies are dropping to critical levels."Individuals are not at risk of contracting the coronavirus from donating blood, and the virus poses no known risk to patients receiving transfusions, officials said."It's safe to donate blood," said Admiral Brett Giroir, Assistant Secretary of Health. "Part of preparedness includes a robust blood supply."RELATED: San Diego to legally enforce new public health orders over coronavirusAs a safety precaution, San Diego Blood Bank is currently deferring people who have traveled to areas with World Health Organization level 3 travel notices (China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, France and Spain, among others) for 28 days from their date of departure from the outbreak area. If donors have been exposed to or treated for coronavirus, they are also deferred for 28 days. People experiencing coronavirus symptoms, including fever, cough and shortness of breath, should not attempt to donate."It's important to note that blood collection activities are not `mass gatherings,' rather they are controlled blood drives conducted using appropriate infection control mechanisms intended to assure the safety of the products, donors and staff," said Doug Morton, COO of San Diego Blood Bank. "San Diego Blood Bank is highly regulated and is following best practices, such as properly cleaning surfaces between donation."The blood bank encourages all healthy individuals to donate blood. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in general good health. To make an appointment, visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org or call 619-400-8251. 2376

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation launched a project Thursday to build an Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater with permanent seating in the cemetery's assembly area. The foundation, which sponsors the Avenue of Flags as well as the Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon and the annual veterans' services at the cemetery, is working with cemetery leadership and the VA's National Cemetery Administration on the design of the amphitheater. The VA-required construction of the amphitheater and maintenance endowment are expected to cost between 0,000 and 0,000 -- the largest project the Support Foundation has yet undertaken at Miramar National Cemetery. No federal funds will be expended for the project."We're dedicating our fifth Annual "Virtual Gala" fund-raiser to the Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater, said Charlie Inot, Support Foundation president and CEO. "We're asking corporations, members of veterans' organizations and civic groups, as well as the public, to help make this vision for Miramar a reality through their generous contributions."The plan for the amphitheater includes long concrete benches arranged in a semi-circle within the existing flag assembly area. The benches would be fronted with stone, matching that used throughout the cemetery. Landscaping plans include artificial turf areas between the seating and around the amphitheater perimeter. The seating area is designed to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements by providing handicapped access and wheelchair spaces."To accommodate guests at our veterans services in the past, we've had to set up folding chairs in the flag assembly area," said Sallay Kim, Support Foundation vice president and chair of the Virtual Gala. "That's not really satisfactory or comfortable for our guests, especially if the ground is too soft to properly support the chairs. Permanent seating would remedy that situation."Renderings of the amphitheater and information on contributing to the project can be found at www.gala.miramarcemetery.org."The successful addition of amphitheater seating at Miramar National Cemetery will benefit tens of thousand of veterans, their families, friends and the general public in future years. Hopefully, in gratitude for the service of all veterans, we will receive strong public support," said Denny Schoville, Support Foundation chairman. The fund drive will continue through the end of 2020. 2453
