ALEXANDRIA, Ind. -- More than a dozen small dogs were rescued from one of the worst cases of animal hoarding officials in Madison County, Indiana say they have ever seen. Madison County Sheriff's deputies responded to a complaint about dogs barking at a home on Trenton Street in Alexandria on Saturday just after 2 p.m. Responding deputies said the smell from the home was so strong that it reached the driveway and the homeowner had to walk around feces to exit the home. Inside the home, deputies found 18 Shih-Tzu and Rat Terrier mixed dogs with severely matted and unkempt fur and fecal matter on the floors throughout the home. The dogs appeared to be well fed, according to deputies but were in need of intensive care. “When we’re called to help with a situation like this, and you can smell the urine from the driveway…you know it’s going to be really bad,” said Maleah Stringer, Director of the Animal Protection League, Inc. (APL), the city of Anderson’s animal shelter. “There has to be some point along the way that people have to realize they can’t handle caring for this many dogs, and they need help. Sadly, too many don’t make that call and the dogs end up paying the price.”Several of the dogs in the home were being kept inside a small bedroom that was covered in mold and feces. The smell of ammonia inside the home was so intense that two deputies had to be treated for exposure. The owner voluntarily surrendered all 18 dogs to the Animal Protection League of Madison County. According to the APL, one of the dogs was in such poor shape that it had to be euthanized.  “We are hopeful the remaining 17 dogs are eventually healthy enough to be adopted," said Stringer. "Right now, we’re looking at about 0 per dog just to get the basic veterinary care. The cost for those with medical issues is going to be even more.”You can follow the dog’s progress and learn more about how you can help on the Animal Protection League of Madison County's Facebook page. 2041

After the MLB Players Association said on Monday that it has rejected the latest proposal from baseball owners to resume play, MLB says it is ready to move forward with framework that the players and owners agreed to shortly after the season was postponed in March.MLB is now asking if players will be able to report on July 1 for training camp, and if the players will agree to health and safety protocols imposed by MLB. MLB is giving the players' union until Tuesday night to respond.MLB said in a statement, “Today, the Major League Baseball Players Association informed us that they have rejected the agreement framework developed by Commissioner Manfred and Tony Clark. Needless to say, we are disappointed by this development.MLB said that the proposal rejected by players included the expansion of the MLB playoffs and a universal DH. MLB players union released the following statement:“The MLBPA Executive Board met multiple times in recent days to assess the status of our efforts to resume the 2020 season.“Earlier this evening, the full Board reaffirmed the players' eagerness to return to work as soon and as safely as possible. To that end we anticipate finalizing a comprehensive set of health and safety protocols with Major League Baseball in the coming days, and we await word from the league on the resumption of spring training camps and a proposed 2020 schedule.“While we had hoped to reach a revised back to work agreement with the league, the Players remain fully committed to proceeding under our current agreement and getting back on the field for the fans, for the game, and for each other.”The players union has complained that the league is attempting to play the fewest number of games possible.“The commissioner has repeatedly threatened to schedule a dramatically shortened season unless players agree to hundreds of millions in further concessions,” the MLBPA said on June 13. “Our response has been consistent that such concessions are unwarranted, would be fundamentally unfair to players, and that our sport deserves the fullest 2020 season possible.”The framework released late Monday does not stipulate an exact number of games, but it is believed that MLB will try to complete 50 to 60 games for the 2020 season. 2259

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- As firefighters work towards 100% containment in the Valley Fire, business owners are cleaning up the damage left behind by the flames. Alpine Dog Ranch is a vacation ranch for dogs to say while their owners are away. When the Valley Fire started, the ranch's owner, Thomas MacKinnon, was taking care of nine dogs, including his own. He quickly rushed to get them all into a van and tried to get out, but MacKinnon says they were trapped by flames. He and several neighbors took refuge in an open field until the flames passed. Firefighters and a 747 Supertanker saved all of the structures. No one was hurt. The fire did burn a lot of the greenery on the ranch and now MacKinnon is cleaning up; repairing fencing, the sprinkler system and covering burned patches with woodchips. MacKinnon says the fire was an added challenge on top of a difficult year. Like many businesses, the Alpine Dog Ranch has been struggling. With people not going on vacation and needing a place to leave their dogs, business has been slow. MacKinnon's friends set up a Go Fund Me page to help with the ranch's repairs.
