The parents said they refuse to cut their sons’ locs in order to conform.“I don’t see how his hair stops him from learning or doing anything else,” Tina Johnson said.Nate and Tina Johnson's 6-year-old son, Asten, has been enrolled at Zion Temple Christian Academy for the past three years with no issue – but when they reached out to enroll their 3-year-old, they were told both boys were not allowed to have locs.“At this point, I’m fighting for my son,” Tina Johnson said.For the Johnsons, their hair and their heritage are intertwined. It’s a message they passed on to their children.“He doesn’t need to conform to fit any kind of mold,” Tina Johnson said.The family said they were disappointed to find out the predominantly-Black school they’ve been sending Asten to since Pre-K wouldn’t take him back with his hair in a certain style.“If this was a school in a different neighborhood, I don’t think the sting would be as hard,” she said.The Zion Temple Christian Academy in Avondale sent out an email saying "hair must be cut one inch short." Braids and design cuts for boys are also banned. WCPO reached out to Zion Temple Christian Academy for comment on this story but could not reach anyone who was allowed to comment on the school’s hair policy.“I’m sure it’s grown some, but it’s not drastically different from what it was in the school year,” she said. “He did start transitioning to this loc journey during the school year.”The Johnsons will be enrolling their kids in other schools – a tough, last-minute decision they said they feel they have no choice but to make.“It’s okay to be who you are, be confident in your own skin and relish that,” Nate Johnson said. “It’s something that you should be proud of. CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV) — Some Coronado residents are shocked and confused after getting a letter from the City, urging them to read the newly released Environmental Impact Report for the airport's "Land Use Compatibility Plan."Many worried that a new airport would be coming into Naval Air Base North Island. However, as 10News discovered, the San Diego Regional Airport Authority has no plans to expand the airport into the Coronado. Custom golf cart maker, Mike Matheny and his dog, Buddy, love everything about Coronado — even the blaring jet noise. "Well, that's the sound of freedom to me," Matheny said. But when he and his neighbors got a letter from the City of Coronado, urging residents to read the Environmental Impact Report for "Naval Air Station North Island Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan," many wondered, are they expanding the airport onto the base?"I think there are other avenues," Matheny said. "Everybody's talking about Brown Field being the most ideal. Expanding that and so forth. But I don't want it here in Coronado. I know that."Just the thought of commercial planes constantly roaring above his home, the increased traffic, and property values taking a nosedive made Matheny nervous. So 10News asked the San Diego Regional Airport Authority to clear the air. Are there plans to expand the airport into Coronado?"None whatsoever," Airport Authority manager, Ralph Redman, said. It turns out the 182-page document is one of 16 state-mandated reports that assess the environmental impacts of the current airport onto surrounding neighborhoods. The report shows there are no significant impacts to Coronado residents, except in the "Land Use and Planning" category. If adopted, 1,000 residents who live in the same area as Matheny would have strict restrictions on future property developments. "We wouldn't want a school or a high rise building to be built right off the end of a runway," Redman said. "We are trying to limit the amount of density that would go into that area."So with no plans for a new airport, Matheny and Buddy can breathe a sigh of relief. COVINGTON, Ky. -- At least three Northern Kentucky school districts will be closed Monday after state lawmakers rushed through a pension overhaul plan.Covington Independent, Boone County and Kenton County schools confirmed they'll be closed April 2.Covington spokesperson Deb Vance said 180 of 271 teachers called to say they're taking a personal day on Monday. The day will have to be made up later, she said. In Boone County, Superintendent Randy Poe said a day off will let teachers and families travel to Frankfort."Drastic times call for drastic action," Poe said in a letter to parents. "Although closing school is the last thing anyone wants to do, one of the reasons for this decision to close school is because educators feel one of their main responsibilities is to advocate for the children of the Commonwealth."The bill passed Thursday night preserves benefits for current retirees. Most benefits for current workers would also be preserved, but sick days would be capped after this year and will not be applied toward retirement.
