SEATTLE — U.S. researchers have given a healthy volunteer the first shot of an experimental coronavirus vaccine as anxiously awaited testing opens. Residents in Freeport, Grand Bahamas woke up to severely flooded neighborhoods on Tuesday following the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian. United Nations officials estimate more than 60,000 people in the northwest Bahamas will need food following the catastrophic natural disaster. Tim Aylen, a Bahamian journalist assisting The Associated Press with the hurricane coverage, had to abandon his home with his family due to the flooding. Speaking about some of his work, Aylen said he had no idea he would be shooting pictures of himself and his family evacuating their home as part of his coverage. Early Tuesday, Aylen could be seen wadding through chest-level flood waters as he made his way through the streets of Arden Forest in Freeport.His 21-year-old daughter Julia Aylen, and 17-year-old son Matthew Aylen, along with their three dogs were seeking higher ground Tuesday morning, with images showing their exhaustion from the ordeal. On Sunday, Paul's office announced that the the U.S. senator from Kentucky tested positive for coronavirus. Paul's office said he was asymptomatic and feeling fine. Paul continued to work on Capitol Hill until he learned of his positive test.Although Paul was not around many staffers, he was in close proximity of a number of fellow senators. Republican senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee opted to self-quarantine following Paul's announcement. Paul's office said that staffers began working remotely 10 days ago and he had virtually no direct contact with his staff. “Given that my wife and I had traveled extensively during the weeks prior to COVID-19 social distancing practices, and that I am at a higher risk for serious complications from the virus due to having part of my lung removed seven months ago, I took a COVID-19 test when I arrived in D.C. last Monday," Paul said in a statement. "I felt that it was highly unlikely that I was positive since I have had no symptoms of the illness, nor have I had contact with anyone who has either tested positive for the virus or been sick."The CDC issued the following guidelines for testing:Hospitalized patients who have signs and symptoms compatible with COVID-19 in order to inform decisions related to infection control.Other symptomatic individuals such as, older adults (age ≥ 65 years) and individuals with chronic medical conditions and/or an immunocompromised state that may put them at higher risk for poor outcomes (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, receiving immunosuppressive medications, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease).Any persons including healthcare personnel, who within 14 days of symptom onset had close contact with a suspect or laboratory-confirmed4 COVID-19 patient, or who have a history of travel from affected geographic areas5 (see below) within 14 days of their symptom onset.Paul believed he should have been tested because of a preexisting condition."The nature of COVID-19 put me – and us all – in a Catch-22 situation," Paul said.
