BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday that the role of the United Nations should be bolstered in handling the global economic downturn, achieving sustainable development, and safeguarding world peace and security. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing nation, China has always observed the principles of the UN Charter, supported the UN's efforts to improve security, development and human rights and its reform to increase efficiency, Hu said to visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon Hu.     "China will continue to join in the UN undertakings and carry out its duties with responsive and constructive attitude, and will work with the international community to build a harmonious world," Hu said. YAN'AN, Shaanxi Province, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Party cadres should always keep clean and stay away from corruption, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official said Saturday.     "Party cadres should withstand tests of the country's reform and opening-up and the Party's ruling status," said Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.     Li, also a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks as the Autumn term started Saturday in China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP), China Executive Leadership Academy Jinggangshan (CELAJ) and China Executive Leadership Academy Yan'an (CELAY).     "As Party cadres are being surrounded with more and more temptations, the education on resistance against corruption must be a vital task as well as the core content of Party spirit training," Li said.     The three schools, approved by the CPC Central Committee, are national training bases in fields such as CPC history and Party building theory, for government officials, enterprise managers and army officials.     "Schools should make it an important mission during education and training to strengthen Party spirit, ideal faith and good style, so as to play a unique role in promoting Party cadres' uprightness," he said.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China will lower gasoline and diesel prices by 190 yuan (27.8 U.S. dollars) per tonne from Wednesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Tuesday.     The benchmark price of gasoline will be 6,620 yuan a tonne, and for diesel 5,880 yuan a tonne, according to the NDRC.     The retail price of gasoline will drop by 0.14 yuan per liter and that of diesel will decrease by 0.16 yuan per liter.     It is the eighth fuel price adjustment since the country adopted a new fuel pricing mechanism, which took effect on Jan. 1 and the first reduction of fuel prices in two months.     Under the pricing mechanism, the NDRC will consider changing the benchmark retail prices of oil products when the international crude price changes more than 4 percent over 22 straight working days.     The price cut was in accordance with the international price changes, the NDRC said.     The average crude price of Brent, Dubai and Cinta has declined to 71.52 U.S. dollars a barrel, down 5.02 percent since the previous fuel price adjustment, according to the Shanghai-based CBI (China) Co., Ltd., a leading service provider in Chinese commodity markets.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin Tuesday urged more efforts to perfect the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China(CPC).     Speaking at a seminar to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), CPPCC Chairman Jia said the system is an inevitable choice for China to press ahead with its social and political development.     Efforts should be made to give full play to the unique advantages of the CPPCC, the top political advisory body, he said. URUMQI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of foreign diplomats in China on Thursday visited Shihezi city in northwest China' s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, voicing their appreciation to the development model of the city.     Shihezi city, some 150 km northwest of Urumqi, is a young city which was established in the 1950s in the gobi of Xinjiang. With the development of some 60 years, the city has become one of the most developed cities in the autonomous region.     In the early phase of the city' s development, Shihezi focused on reclaiming land in the desert for agriculture. Meanwhile, the city began to establish its industry system and high-tech in recent years in order to reach a comprehensive development.
