Ten people have died after a Florida nursing home failed to evacuate its residents, who suffered for days in oppressive heat with no air conditioning after Hurricane Irma, according to the Hollywood Police Department.A 93-year-old man died on Tuesday, and a 94-year-old woman died on Wednesday -- adding to eight who were found dead last week at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, or who died after being evacuated to a hospital.The exact causes of death have not been reported, but a number of the 141 residents who were evacuated were treated for heat-related issues. An ongoing criminal investigation is underway.Nursing home residents sweltered in hazardous conditions after Hurricane Irma, which felled a tree that knocked out the transformer powering the air conditioning system. Many were moved into the hallways, next to fans and spot coolers. One video obtained by CNN shows a naked woman sitting in the hallway on what appears to be a hospital bed.Despite multiple calls between the nursing home and state authorities, at no time did the nursing home report that their patients were in danger or that they needed to be evacuated, according to a report on Tuesday by Florida Governor Rick Scott's office. The state advised managers "multiple times" to call 911 if such a situation arose."Something they failed to do," the 159-page report said."This facility is failing to take responsibility for the fact that they delayed calling 911 and made the decision not to evacuate their patients to one of the largest hospitals in Florida, which is directly across the street," Scott said in a statement.Last week, the nursing home expressed its sympathy for the families of the deceased and said it is "fully cooperating with all authorities and regulators to assess what went wrong." The 49-year-old son of a prominent Macomb County, Michigan judge faces first-degree murder charges in the death of his father, whose body was found on a Florida golf course. Police said James Scandirito Jr. quickly became a suspect in the case after he called the Boca Raton police on April 1 to report his father, James "Skip" Scandirito Sr., missing. The son said his father never returned home on March 31, but Scandirito Jr.'s story had inconsistencies, according to police. Scandirito Sr.'s body was later discovered at an abandoned golf course in Boca Raton. The Alachua County police arrested Scandirito Jr. after he was seen driving his vehicle with stolen license plates. He's being held without bond in his father's death. Scandirito Sr. represented Harrison Township on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners in the 1990s and was later elected to serve as a judge in 41B District Court in Mount Clemens.  1000

TENINO, Wash. – George Washington’s face may be on U.S. currency, but never on money quite like this.“We've created our own,” said Wayne Fournier, mayor of Tenino, Washington.It’s a town of about 2,000 people, halfway between Seattle and Portland. Using a printing press from the 19th century, Tenino is now printing its own form of currency, made of thin pieces of wood.“We're growing money on trees here,” Mayor Fournier said. “Literally.”It’s called “complimentary currency” or “scrip.” Here’s how it works: using ,000 from the general fund, the city is backing the wooden notes, 400 of them in all, and giving them to town residents in need.“We issue it out to people that have been affected by the pandemic and qualify financially,” Mayor Fournier said. “They can receive up to 0 a month.”In turn, people can spend the wooden money, but only in town, at businesses that signed up to participate in the program. Those businesses can then redeem the wooden money back at City Hall for real U.S. dollars.“I thought it was a really good idea,” said Juan Martinez, of Don Juan’s Mexican Kitchen in Tenino.The restaurant has been around for eight years, but the pandemic affected its bottom line and that of people in town, too. So far, though, the wooden money is getting around.“I've had quite a few people come in and, you know, they hadn't gone out to dinner in a while because they were laid off of work,” Martinez said, “and when they got it, had a few people come in and enjoy lunch with their families and were able to pay with the wooden money.”It’s a currency circulation that the mayor wants to keep going.“The whole idea is just to keep money bouncing around the community,” he said.The town has done this before, back in the 1930s, during the Great Depression.“It was a big hit and it saved the city at the time,” Mayor Fournier said.It’s an old lifeline they hope will keep working again in a new era.City leaders say they have been fielding calls from as far away as Spain, New Zealand and Japan from people interested in their wooden money.
