DETROIT — A petting zoo in Michigan took one of its animals out on a stroll.It wasn't just any animal, though. It was a camel. Jeffrey the camel, to be exact.Last Sunday, Lewis Farms & Petting Zoo took Jeffrey out for a trip to PetSmart. The farm, located in New Era, Michigan, posted a video of Jeffrey's trip to Facebook. Cynda Murrow has been working at Walgreens for four years.“I get to meet new people, and I like to say hi to all of my co-workers,” Murrow said.She’s a person just like anyone else, but we all have something that’s a part of our story. Murrow's story includes living with an intellectual and developmental disability.“Some people don’t understand me, so that’s why I use a device to help me," Murrow said. "But some of the people speak Spanish, so that’s hard for me to speak Spanish because I don’t know Spanish. I know a little bit of Spanish though.”Cynda says she loves her job. Just like any job, some days can be challenging. However, she always finds a way to make it work.“(I have a) device that I use to help me speak if I have trouble," Murrow said. "I do have this button right here that says ’I’m using a communication device to help me speak. Please be patient with me.’”Advocates who offer support for people with disabilities say employment is an important part of life. That’s why national organizations like The Arc work to break down those barriers.“Employment is more than just getting a paycheck. Employment develops independent, self-esteem, self-protection, and limits vulnerability in mistreatment, abuse and neglect,” Luke Wheeland with The Arc said.In the past 30 years, there’s been a lot of effort to get people with disabilities into the workforce. It all comes down to seeking out the right resources. Murrow’s mom says she’s been educating herself on what’s good for Murrow since the day she was born.“I found that information is power, so I just learned as much as I could,” Murrow'’s mom Wayla Murrow said.Another resource Murrow’s family uses, is the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.“Vocational Rehabilitation is the largest provider of job placement services for people with disabilities in the country,” Eric Clark with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation said.Clark says Vocational Rehabilitation programs exist in all 50 states and serves about a million people per year. Those who have a documented disability are able to partner with a rehabilitation counselor to develop an individual plan to find employment.“In that process they’ll talk about what kind of employment are they interested in, what type of employment have they done before, what skills did they develop from that employment," Clark said. "But also, even talking about general life activities. Do they volunteer? Do they do sports?”Clark says a good reference to use when applying for jobs is the 2526

Cocoa Beach is usually packed on Labor Day weekend.“Oh, it’s umbrella city; just an absolute zoo,” says resident Tom Burns. “That’s why we don’t come here on Labor Day.”However, that’s not the scene this year. There isn’t much for Burns and his wife, Melissa, to do but prepare and wait to see how Hurricane Dorian will impact them. “You just get prepared and hope for the best," he says. "It's like a drop on a roller coaster; you know the drop is coming and you go with it.”The Burns pretty much had the water to themselves Sunday, while much of the beach town is boarded up. Many of those who haven't left are making sure Cocoa Beach is ready.“We’re going to expect some damage, but if we’re going to try to mitigate [and] control some of the damage," says resident Cindy Gentile. Gentile is helping board up a friend’s house that’s located just blocks from the beach. “This is a sitting duck right here,” she says. “It’s a bullseye right here." Gentile isn't leaving for the storm.“Obviously preparing for the worst and hoping for the best," she says.It's the kind of preparation Floridians like Sharon Smith have done before. "Our house is fully hurricane proof, and it did about 120 (mph) a couple of years ago," she explains.Speaking of houses, Tom and Melissa Burns closed on their new home in Cocoa Beach just three days ago.“Buying a house is stressful enough, but once we got done with that, they forecasted it and now it was like a whole new chapter of stress," Tom Burns says.They, too, have been played the hurricane waiting game before. “Just hunker down and enjoy our new house and hope it’s still there after the storm," he says.At this point, with boards and shutters up, and much of this area shut down, that’s all residents say they can do until Hurricane Dorian has passed. 1807

Days before a gun rights protest that is set to take place this weekend at the Virginia Capitol, Gov. Ralph Northam declared an emergency, which will ban protesters from entering the grounds around the Capitol with firearms. The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office. Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers. “We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate. Following the 2019 election, Democrats have the majority in the Virginia House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades. With Democrats holding the bicameral legislature, there has been a push to enact gun control. While a bill to ban assault weapons was dropped earlier this week, other bills are still being considered. One is limiting the purchases of firearms to one a month. Earlier this month, Northam signed legislation to prohibit firearms inside of the Capitol building and adjacent legislative office building. The law does not prohibit guns from the grounds near the Capitol, which is why Northam signed an executive order for this weekend. The response to gun legislation in Virginia has been swift, prompting an expected protest for this weekend. DETROIT — Police are looking for a man caught on camera stuffing a 4-foot snake down his pants at a pet store in Rockwood, Michigan, on Wednesday, March 20.Surveillance video at the I Love My Pets store shows the man reaching into the python's cage before putting it in his pants and casually walking away.Store employees say the python had just been adopted and was getting ready to go to its new home on the same day it was stolen."The last thing we were expecting was to check the video and take a closer look and see a man putting it down the front of his pants, we were not expecting that at all," said employee Callie McElroy.
