Two days after President Donald Trump’s visit to the city, Democratic nominee Joe Biden met with members of Jacob Blake’s family on Thursday before hosting a community discussion on race.Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney who is representing the Blake family, said that the former vice president met with Blake's family for nearly 90 minutes. Blake joined for part of the conversation via telephone from his hospital bed, both Crump and Biden confirmed.“The family was grateful for the meeting and was very impressed that the Bidens were so engaged and willing to really listen,” Crump said. “Jacob's mother led them all in prayer for Jacob's recovery. They talked about changing the disparate treatment of minorities in police interactions, the impact of selecting Kamala Harris as a Black woman as his running mate. and Vice President Biden's plans for change. Mr. Blake Sr. talked about the need for systemic reform because the excessive use of force by police against minorities has been going on for far too long.”Biden said that Jacob Blake told him “nothing is going to defeat” him."I had an opportunity to spend some time with Jacob [Blake] on the phone. He's out of ICU. We spoke for about 15 minutes. His brother and two sisters, his dad and his mom on the telephone," Biden said.Blake was shot seven times in the back by Officer Rusten Sheskey last month. Sheskey has been placed on administrative leave per police policy. While Sheskey has not been charged with a crime, Biden said earlier this week that charges should be filed.“I do think there's a minimum need to be charged,” Biden said, also adding that the Louisville, Kentucky, officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor should also be criminally charged.Biden told Kenosha community members that fighting for racial equality “is something worth losing over." He added, "But we're not going to lose."While Biden said that he would make addressing systematic racism a priority if elected in November, Trump said on Tuesday that he does not believe systematic racism is a problem in police/community relations."I don't believe that,” Trump said during his visit to Kenosha on Tuesday. “No, I don't believe that. I think the police do an incredible job. And I think you do have some bad apples. I think you'd agree every once in a while you'll see something. And you do have the other situation too, where they're under this tremendous pressure and they don't handle it well. They call it choking and it happens."Biden promised community members in Kenosha that he would form a policing commission, vowing to invite the police and civil rights leaders to the same table. 2649

TUCSON, AZ - The United States Customs and Border Patrol says several agents were assaulted in two different incidents on Tuesday. Both incidents happened near the border, west of Tucson. In the first incident, agents were attempting to stop a human smuggling operation involving four male suspects. During the arrest attempt, one of the men became combative, according to Border Patrol. The 25-year-old Guatemalan national allegedly threw dirt at an agent’s face and swung a belt with a large buckle on it at an agent. After being taken into custody, the suspect also allegedly spit in an agent’s face. The three other suspects, including two illegal aliens and an Arizona man, were also arrested. In the second incident, Border Patrol says an agent was assaulted while attempting to arrest an illegal alien west of Three Points. The agent and a canine partner tracked the 36-year-old Guatemalan national into a desolate desert area. The man became combative and hit the agent several times, according to Border Patrol. The agent eventually took the man into custody. The suspect involved in the second assault was previously removed from the country in May for immigration violations. One agent was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and has been released.Border Patrol did not indicate which incident that agent was involved in. 1360

Two liters of Dr. Pepper costs .80 at a Dollar General store in Union City, NJ. A 10-oz bag of Twizzlers sells for .50. But the low-end retailer is attempting a high-end revamp of its food offerings — adding yogurt, nuts, protein bars, veggie snacks, and coconut water to meet customer demand for healthier choices.Dollar General (DG) has recently added around 125 "better for you" items to its shelves in 2,700 stores. The products appear under Dollar General's Good & Smart house brand, and the store also carries Annie's, Back to Nature, Honest, Nature Valley, and Kashi brands. On Tuesday, Dollar General said the initiative was performing better than it expected, and it has plans to roll out to more stores next year. The chain began offering the products after getting feedback from shoppers who could not find affordable food with low sodium, calorie, fat and sugar levels or without artificial sweeteners, said Dollar General's Chief Merchandising Officer Jason Reiser."These types of healthy food options seemed out of reach," Reiser said.Dollar General's move signals the wider consumer shift to healthier foods is beginning to take hold among low-income shoppers. Dollar General, which sells most of its items for under , serves a wide range of demographics. But its primary customers are value-conscious?and come from low-and-fixed income households."Our core customer is always a little bit behind the curve," Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos said at a conference earlier this year. "Better-for-you is starting to emerge as a trend." 1573
