Are you looking for some steaks to throw on the grill this weekend or on the Fourth of July? You may want to bring extra money; the pandemic is sending meat prices up sharply this month.High prices are starting to impact consumers, restaurants, and anyone who cooks meat for their business.Tyrique Ramsey and his family have served his community from a food truck for years, but he was forced to raise prices last week as pork costs skyrocketed."We used to be able to get it for .99 a pound, but now we are almost paying .99 a pound," Ramsey said. While chicken and ground beef prices are higher, the worst is steak, where prices have gone up almost 50% this year on some cuts. for a package of steakAt Walmart, basic strip steaks were a pound, which came to for a package of two small, shrink-wrapped steaks. One of the cheapest cuts of meat, chuck roast, was a pound, almost double from a year ago.Ground beef was in the (fatty) to (lean) a pound range as well, a far cry from the normal summertime price of a pound in many supermarkets.Shopper Jackie Thompson says she can't afford it anymore."I think it's ridiculous, it is totally ridiculous," she said. " for a steak!"At a nearby supermarket, bone-in ribeyes were at a pound, bringing the total to for one steak. Top-dollar cuts like filet mignon were nowhere to be found. The Hutchinson family wondered if short supplies to blame."It's still pretty thin in the meat aisle, for sure," they said.Government blames plant shutdowns and slowdownsThe Bureau of Labor Statistics says processing plant shutdowns continue to cause shortages.Even after those plants reopen, many will be on limited schedules with fewer workers. The Labor report says beef prices rose 11% in May. The average retail price of beef roast rose a whopping 19% during the month. In addition, prices for chicken, tomatoes and even ice cream went up the government said.Restaurants forced to raise pricesRamsey has had to explain why his price board has gone up in recent days, just as many restaurants are raising their menu prices."I just had to go up a few more dollars," he said. "But a lot of the customers, they kind of understand, we explain it to them."Grocery stores insist they are not profiting from rising prices. Still, attorneys general offices in several states are investigating the source of these price hikes, which appear to be linked to processing and slaughterhouse shutdowns due to COVID-19.Until the pandemic subsides, prices could remain on the high side. Are you tired? Tired of the lack of normalcy, the closed public spaces, the news that we are trending in the wrong direction with this pandemic?COVID-19 fatigue is a real thing, and it’s affecting billions of people around the world.“It’s a very uncomfortable experience for us as human beings to not have a plan and not know how is this going to turn out,” said Dr. Kaye Hermanson.Hermanson is a clinical psychologist at UC Davis Health and compares the emotional fatigue to climbing a mountain. You have just spent hours hiking up, and just when you think you have hit the peak, you realize it is a false summit and see this daunting second hill in front of you. That sinking feeling knowing you have done so much, yet still have so much longer to go, is what Hermanson says this second spike in COVID-19 numbers can feel like."We’re actually hoping for the absence of something,” said Hermanson. "Not getting sick isn’t quite as reinforcing as something that happens where we’re like, ‘Oh, I did this behavior and it resulted in this good outcome.'"“[Fatigue] can be internal, where you feel like you’ve got these sandbags on your shoulders and you can’t take another step,” added Bob Ciampi.Ciampi is a licensed clinical social worker and says the feeling is something a lot of us are familiar with: burnout. The same kind you might feel at work or at home when you are overwhelmed. To ‘refill the tank,’ many people might go out for a night of fun with friends, or go to the gym, but COVID-19 has closed many of these places nationwide only exacerbating the issue. So, it begs the question: what can we do?“The things that we need to do are be aware of our thinking,” said Dr. Hermanson. "To say I’ll control what I can control. I’ll take it a minute at a time.”“Some people call that bite-sized pieces,” added Ciampi.Ciampi and Hermanson say the idea is to make things more manageable. Instead of looking at the daunting whole, they suggest breaking it up into more attainable parts.Small victories can help give that reinforcement. “It can be a little bit of learned helplessness,” she said. “It’s the idea that in certain circumstances where we feel like nothing we do is good enough, nothing that we do keeps bad things from happening, and so we kind of give up.”Another thing Hermanson and Ciampi suggest is adjusting our mindset or going to therapy.Hermanson says the simple knowledge that millions of other people feel just like us can be empowering and help push us through. 2494

An incident that began as an argument over masks led to an officer-involved shooting near Lansing, Michigan on Tuesday.A 43-year-old man from Grand Ledge was shot and killed by a police officer after a fight at a Quality Dairy store in Dimondale.Authorities say a 77-year-old man from Lansing who was wearing a mask and the 43-year-old man who wasn't wearing a mask got into an altercation. The unmasked man reportedly stabbed the masked man and fled the area. A deputy later spotted the vehicle and pulled him over.Once the man pulled over his car, police say he approached the deputy with two knives and a screwdriver.Authorities say the assailant continued to approach the deputy as she backed up, and she fired her weapon, fatally shooting the assailant. The deputy was not physically harmed and is on administrative leave. The case has been turned over to Michigan State Police. The 77-year-old man who was stabbed is reportedly stable. This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1000

As lawmakers begin bipartisan talks for another round of COVID-19 stimulus funding, divisions between the White House and Congress are threatening its passage.Republican congressional leaders met with Trump on Monday at the White House as cases spike across the country and key provisions of the last stimulus package, like increased unemployment benefits, are set to expire in the coming days.Trump says “good things” are happening, but the administration is stiffening its opposition to more testing money and interjecting other priorities that could complicate passage.According to The Washington Post, a bill coming together between GOP lawmakers will embrace Trump's priorities like payroll tax cuts, measures incentivizing schools to reopen in the fall with additional funding and little aid to state and local governments. Some of those points have already raised concerns with several Republican lawmakers, while the bill will undoubtedly face pushback from Democrats.According to The Associated Press, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is prepared to roll out the Republican plan in a matter of days, which should total about trillion in funding. The Democrats introduced a trillion HEROES Act stimulus package in May, which has already passed the House. McConnell and the Republican-controlled Senate have not considered that bill for passage. 1372

An Arizona resident captured a dangerous encounter between a bobcat and rattlesnake earlier this week. The video taken by Laura Lucky in Scottsdale shows the pair facing off along a sidewalk. The bobcat paws and bites at the snake as it tries to slither away and, at times, strike back. At the end of the video, one is clearly the winner.Watch the encounter in the video player above.  423
