A lot of things are changing for schools this year. Some classes may be online and some may be partially on campus. Regardless of where they're taking place, teachers are still spending money on supplies.According to a survey by AdoptAClassroom.org, many teachers have spent about a third of their school supply expenses on distance learning materials.“They're actually spending more,” said Ann Pifer, Executive Director at AdoptAClassroom. “70% of the teachers we surveyed said that they have delivered supplies to students' homes, either by bringing them personally or by mailing assignments with supplies.”Nearly every three out of four teachers have spent money on printers, ink and paper to make work packets for students who may not have access to computers and internet.Nearly half have spent money on postage and mailing supplies, so they can send learning materials to students.Even in schools where classes are being held in person, AdoptAClassroom still expects teachers to spend more money on supplies.“In a normal elementary classroom, there's a basket of pens and papers and crayons and scissors on a table,” said Pifer. “And groups of students share those supplies to do projects. They're not going to be able to do that this year.”Through AdoptAClassroom.org, people can donate to teachers and those educators can use that money to spend in an online marketplace. 1387

A high-profile actor recently came clean about a problem millions of Americans are struggling with right now. After 16 years of sobriety, Dax Shepard says he relapsed on a painkiller he was prescribed after a motorcycle accident and surgery. He says he's getting help to stay clean.“At the end of the day, there is still too much stigma out there when it comes to substance abuse disorders and the opioid epidemic,” said Dr. Anand Parekh, Chief Medical Adviser at the Bipartisan Policy Center. “This a public health challenge. We need to support our friends and families, so that they can get the treatment they need.”The Bipartisan Policy Center recently came out with an in-depth look at the billions in federal money going to fight the opioid epidemic. While the amount being spent on prevention, treatment and recovery is increasing, sadly, so are the numbers of drug overdose deaths. The group believes that's in part due to opioid misuse evolving.Synthetic opioids like fentanyl are driving more deaths. More people are using multiple substances. Usage rates among communities of color are increasing. While federal dollars are flowing to areas experiencing the highest numbers of overdose deaths, there's concern it may not be reaching the highest risk groups.“We still don’t have the majority of Americans who have opioid use disorder on the gold standard medication assisted treatment, so that’s really important,” said Parekh. Those who are incarcerated, pregnant women, new moms, IV drug users, and communities of color are some of the highest risk groups. The center believes curbing America’s growing opioid epidemic will require a national addiction treatment system.Their report makes several recommendations, including allowing opioid crisis funding to address multiple substances like cocaine and methamphetamine, putting grant money in to address treatment gaps in diverse communities, and expanding access in correctional settings. They also say we should keep regulatory changes made during the pandemic to give people easier access to medication, and we should remove certain special requirements, so more health care providers can prescribe and treat opioid addiction with medication. 2209

A fraudulent card donning the Department of Justice seal is making its way into the hands of folks against wearing face masks. The Department and Americans with Disabilities Act have come forward publicly stating they do not endorse or support the card. Last week in Downtown Boise, an individual claiming to possess one of the exemption cards walked into Dharma Sushi and Thai and was upset when refused service for refusing to wear a face mask. The restaurant, a privately owned business, requires all customers and staff to wear masks in their restaurant unless eating or drinking. They have signs clearly stating this before entering. They have even spread messages on their social media accounts, asking that anyone who cannot or will not wear a face mask refrain from visiting their location. One of Dharma’s owners said they will continue to enforce their policy because “if an outbreak happened at our store we’d have to close...that could be business ending for us.”The individual refused service claims to have post-traumatic stress disorder. They state that wearing a mask could trigger an episode and several times throughout the video, the same individual references having a “medical exemption.” Upon exiting the restaurant, a male partner shows local authorities his “face mask exempt card” telling them that refusal to comply with the card can result in a fine. This incident was filmed on a cellphone by the individual involved. After the encounter, this person uploaded the content online, where it received just over 32,000 views (the video has since been removed for privacy reasons). Dharma’s owner says that the video led to a series of threats and one-star reviews from strangers out of state. This article was written by Frankie Katafiasor KIVI. 1773

A Florida woman is desperate to resolve a smelly situation. No one will remove the 9-foot dead gator out of her Loxahatchee backyardThis story has all the ingredients for "Only in Florida."  A homeowner in Loxahatchee said she found a dead gator on her property on Friday, and the smell is overwhelming. Her husband first noticed it while mowing the lawn days ago, and she is still at a loss with what to do next. Stacey Rutherford can barely uncover her mouth long enough to describe the stench of a dead alligator in the canal on her property. "It’s gross. It’s gross I just want it gone," she said. "You can't make it up!"Rutherford called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for help and she said they told her to "climb in there and poke it with a stick!"The recommendation to sink it actually stunned her."Ummmmm I told them that I would not be poking it," she said. FWC said every circumstance is different, but officers don't come to pick up decomposing carcasses. Adding that the alligator nuisance hotline will give suggestions on how to let the gas out of the gator, but ultimately, it's the homeowner's responsibility to do that. The other option...simply wait it out. Rutherford said she asked FWC if she could shoot it instead of going in the water. "If she were to shoot it, that's like poking a hole into the belly, which may help release the gases and let it sink,  but she would have to consult with law enforcement to make sure she is not breaking any laws getting into trouble," said wildlife expert David Hitzig Neighbors said the stench is unbearable. "You forget and then you get that big strong whiff," said Raymond Velloza, who lives across the street from where the gator is.  Rutherford says bottom line she can't take the smell any more. "I’m begging for somebody to help. I mean, I’ve called everybody," she said. "Nature should take it’s course in somebody else’s backyard, not mine."Options are limited in this type of situation. You can call the alligator nuisance hotline for advice, hire a private, licensed company to remove it or unfortunately wait until the stench subsides. 2197
