ACCRA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A strange disease has hit inhabitants of the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, near Kumasi, 270 km north of the capital, claiming two lives, health officials said here on Monday.Director of Public Health Dr. Joseph Amankwa told Xinhua that the disease, which had been identified as Laffa viral hemorrhagic fever, and had symptoms similar to those of malaria, caused victims to bleed to death.Dr. Amankwa said he received information about the infection over the weekend but indicated that no other details were made available."We are sending a team to the affected area to verify what the actual situation is to determine our next action. We are also liaising with the World Health Organization to gather enough data on the infections and soon information will be sent out to the public," he said.According to reports carried by local Joy fm radio station, the disease was the first of its kind in the country.The reports quoted health officials as saying infection was passed on from infected rodents like mice and rats and was highly contagious."About two months ago, a young man of 19 years came to our health center here and complained of malaria, so we treated him for malaria but suddenly, blood started coming from the nose, mouth, anus and the ears, and immediately he died," Municipal Director of Health in the Amansie West District, Dominic Brobbey told the radio station.He warned that although the situation was under control, there were no drugs to treat the disease in Ghana, and therefore urged government to expedite action to acquire the necessary drugs to prevent further deaths.

BEIJING, Jan. 05 (Xinhuanet) -- China's satellite television channels have aired fewer entertainment programs this year as broadcasting watchdog's curbs on "excessive entertainment" took effect.The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has cut two-thirds of "racy" entertainment programs on China's 34 satellite channels since the campaign began, the spokesperson for the administration said on Tuesday.Since the regulation took effect on Jan 1, the total number of entertainment programs scheduled for prime-time -7:30 pm to 10 pm - broadcast a week dropped to 38 from 126 at the end of last year, according to a statement from the administration.Under the regulation, announced in October, each satellite channel can broadcast no more than two entertainment programs a week and the maximum length of the program may not exceed 90 minutes.The targeted programs, including dating shows, reality talent shows and emotional stories on the administration's list, were deemed "excessive entertainment" and showing "less taste"."Satellite channels should design programs with innovative content, promoting traditional virtues and socialist core values in their new entertainment programs," the authority said.The administration considers the move crucial to improving cultural content for the public by offering high-level programs.Meanwhile, the number of news programs on the satellite channels has grown to 193 a day, 33 percent more than in 2011.Currently, news programming on each satellite channel has surpassed two hours, and each channel has at least two 30-minute news programs during prime time.But popular dating shows such as If You Are the One, produced by Jiangsu Satellite TV, and reality shows such as China's Got Talent, aired by Shanghai-based Dragon TV, will remain on during prime time in the weekend.Li Hao, spokesman for Hunan Satellite TV, a broadcaster famous for its entertainment programs, told China Daily the regulation will improve the quality of entertainment programs."We have been exploring how to make entertainment shows more meaningful and valuable," he said, adding that the channel has shortened the length of its two entertainment programs from 110 to 90 minutes."We will supervise programs more strictly, and pay close attention to things such as the clothing and comments of hosts and guests," he added.Cheng Manli, a media professor at Peking University, welcomed the new regulation to limit "less tasteful" programs involving violence and money worship."After all, unhealthy programs may hurt young people who are not able to distinguish right from wrong, which also worries their parents," she said.However, Yu Guoming, a professor at the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China, did not think the regulation was the way to improve cultural development."Whether the entertainment program is good or not should be decided by viewers' reaction, instead of an administration's evaluation," he said. OTTAWA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Canadians are working about three years longer before retirement than they were in the 1990s, and have a longer life in retirement, an official study said Wednesday.Statistics Canada, the federal statistics agency, reports that Canada' s men and women, who don't face compulsory retirement, are increasingly choosing to delay retirement, as part of a long-term trend that has begun before the recent recession.The trend of later retirement dates back to the mid-1990s, when a 50-year-old employee could expect to work another 12.5 years before retiring from the daily grind.Today, that same 50-year-old worker could expect another 16 years of employment.The study says that 34 percent of Canadians aged 55 and older were employed in 2010, compared to just 22 percent in 1996.A longer working life would unnecessarily imply a shorter life in retirement due to increased life expectancy, the study says.The study notes that men and women leaving the work force today are spending as much time in their post-career life as many of their predecessors did.For example, between 1977 and 1994, the typical retirement length for a man in Canada rose from 11.2 to 15.4 years; as of 2008, it was 15 years.For women, the average retirement length similarly rose from 16.4 to 20.6 years between 1977 and 1996; as of 2008, it was 19 years.From another point of observation, 50-year-old men can expect to spend 48 percent of their remaining years of life in retirement in 2008,compared with 45 percent in 1977.In 2008, 50-year-old women could expect to spend 55 percent of their remaining years of life in retirement, nearly identical to the proportion in 1977.
