SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving on roads in San Diego during the holiday season can be a headache, as residents and tourists alike deal with increased traffic caused by extra congestion. This year, during Thanksgiving week, the roads have been a little bit safer, according to statistics released by the California Highway Patrol. San Diego County DUI arrests and auto fatalities were both down from last year, for the time period between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Friday at 6:00 a.m. Going into the weekend there have been a total of 21 DUI arrests recorded in San Diego, a decrease from 27 arrests from 2017. RELATED: Check 10News?traffic updatesThe results are also reflected across the state, where the 294 DUI arrests are down from 386 a year ago. There have been no fatal car accidents in San Diego, compared to one at this time last year. Across the state there were 17 car accidents resulting in death, compared to 19 in 2017. The CHP reports that of the 13 fatalities that occurred in their jurisdiction, five were not wearing seat belts.  1142

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter.On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. "Whether or not it will be repaired will be determined."A total of 40 sailors and 23 civilian firefighters suffered various minor injuries, mostly heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, while taking part in the battle to defeat the blaze, Navy officials said.The Bonhomme Richard is the third warship in U.S. naval history to bear the name, which means "Good Man Richard" in French and honors Benjamin Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanac."The vessel has been homeported at Naval Base San Diego since the spring of 2018, when it returned from a six-year port switch to Sasebo, Japan, while becoming the command ship for Navy Expeditionary Strike Group Seven.City News Service contributed to this report 2114

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Fixing San Diego’s streets was one of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s top priorities when he took office, and now he believes they’re on schedule to reach his goal of repairing more than 3,000 miles of roads.About a decade ago, it took crews an entire year to get about 24 miles of street repairs done in the city. Now, crews are averaging 25 miles of street repair a month.Kris McFadden, director of San Diego’s Transportation & Storm Water Department, said the pandemic helped them get the work done without causing much backups on the roads.“We staggered working times, people coming in different times. So, we were able to do a lot of repairs, especially when people weren’t driving on the roads,” said McFadden.Faulconer said, “When I ran for mayor, there was no issue that San Diegans complained about more than streets, so we have been on a mission over the past six years to bring smooth streets to neighborhoods across the city. We overhauled the repair program to speed up fixes, made record investments in street repair, and are on pace to fix half of all City streets by the end of the year. The robust program we now have in place fixes hundreds of miles annually and I strongly encourage the next Mayor to keep the pedal to the metal until every San Diegan can experience a freshly paved street outside their front door.”In a news release, city officials said crews “completed repair work on some of the City’s busiest streets including completing repairs to North Harbor Drive, Fairmont Avenue, Montezuma Road, and a network of streets in Mission Bay that have not seen a major facelift in nearly two decades. Construction on Scripps Poway Parkway is underway and anticipated to be completed in December.”Even though the city is on track to repave half of the its entire street network by the end of the year, City Councilmember Vivian Moreno said there’s more work that needs to be done, specifically on dirt and gravel roads in neighborhoods like Stockton.Moreno sent ABC 10News a statement that read, in part: “These dirt streets are vestiges of the past maintained by policies that are over six decades old.”The city says they’re looking at this request, but the plan is to finish the repairs that have already been scheduled to meet the goal by the end of the year. 2308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doctors across San Diego shared mixed emotions of despair and hope this week, as San Diego's COVID-19 cases surge while front line workers get the first doses of a vaccine."This is actually a really difficult time right now," says Dr. Holly Yang, the President of the San Diego County Medical Society. "Our hospitals are getting quite full and staff is getting really stretched.""It's tiring," says Dr. William Tseng, an Internist at Kaiser Permanente Hospitals. "But, as health professionals, we're here to take care of patients."They say this week has been particularly hard, as an influx of people who contracted the virus during the Thanksgiving holiday threatens to overwhelm the system."It gets tough," says Dr. Karrar Ali, an Emergency Room Physician at Sharp Chula Vista. "Now we're starting to make decisions based upon capacity... That's tough, when your resources start dwindling to the point where it's not just beds, but we're having staffing issues as well."Dr. Yang says, even as bad as things look right now, with the Southern California all but out of ICU beds, doctors in the SDCMS take hope from the vaccine."There's a light at the end of the tunnel," she says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High surf forced the west wall at La Jolla's Children's Pool and Ocean Beach Pier closed Saturday.A high surf advisory was issued for the county's coast from Saturday to Sunday at 4 p.m. Surf is expected to peak Saturday with waves up to 10 feet possible along the county's coastline. Sunday, surf conditions are expected to hold through the day.Beachgoers were warned of strong rip currents and possible beach erosion during the surf event. Lifeguards asked that anyone heading to San Diego's beach hold off on water activities and watch the bluffs until the high surf passes.Because of the surf, San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Pier on Friday just before 10 a.m. and were expected to keep the pier closed through at least Saturday morning.In La Jolla, lifeguards said the west wall of the Children's Pool was closed to visitors, as waves crashed over the barrier. 916
