NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the passage of legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from possessing handguns and long guns as part of his 2018 Women's Agenda.Previously, there was a loophole in which domestic abusers only had to surrender handguns, they must now surrender all firearms."The recent wave of mass shootings is horrifying, and the federal government's failure to act on any form of meaningful gun safety laws is unconscionable," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence. This legislation builds on our gun laws -- already the strongest in the nation-- to make New York safer and stronger." New York law previously prohibited the possession of firearms for those convicted of a felony or a limited number of misdemeanor "serious" offenses. This legislation expands the list of "serious" crimes, which will lead to the loss of a gun license and the surrender of all firearms for those who are convicted. This legislation will also restrict any individual with an arrest warrant from obtaining or renewing a firearm license which was previously not the case.Governor Cuomo cites the fact that in nine of the last 10 mass shootings, the shooter had an existing record of committing or threatening violence against women or harassing them. 1447

Neighborhoods all across America are at a crossroads by figuring out how to grow and develop, without abandoning the people who made the communities so great in the first place. One group of women in Atlanta are facing that exact problem. They're putting up a fight against a new development, and they say we can all stake a stand for what we believe.Michelle Schreiner and Princess Wilson are two of the women who live in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. It's a neighborhood Wilson has seen change before her eyes.“When I was growing up, it was a predominantly African-American neighborhood,” Wilson says. “It was a black neighborhood, and everybody knew everybody there lived here. But when a developer announced plans for a new condo building, the women said enough was enough. The developer’s original plan was to build a 21-story property with 16 luxury condos, selling for million each. 908

NEW YORK CITY — A New York City mom allegedly threw her newborn son out of a bathroom window, District Attorney Melinda Katz said Tuesday. Sabina Dookram, 23, was charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment.“This is a heartbreaking situation," Katz said. "A newborn baby has suffered greatly because of the alleged actions of his mother, who now faces serious charges and a lengthy prison sentence."A neighbor heard crying sounds on Sunday morning, officials said. When she went outside, she found a naked newborn boy on the ground next to the building's garbage. Responding officers found blood on the ground, on the side wall leading up to the bathroom window and on the window sill. The baby was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Katz said. He was placed on a ventilator. Doctors determined he suffered a traumatic brain injury with bleeding and swelling about the brain and scalp and an abdominal injury with internal bleeding.Dookram gave birth on Saturday afternoon, prosecutors said she told officers."I cut the cord with a scissor from the bathroom," Dookram said according to court documents. "I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby, I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep.”Dookram faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. New studies confirm that multiple types of steroids improve survival for severely ill COVID-19 patients, cementing the cheap drugs as a standard of care.An analysis of pooled results from seven studies found that steroids reduced the risk of death in the first month by about one-third compared to placebo treatment or usual care alone in these seriously ill patients who needed extra oxygen. The work was led by the World Health Organization and published Wednesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.Based on the results of the studies, the WHO has made two recommendations. The first, it says a strong corticosteroid therapy for 7 to 10 days should be used in patients with severe or critical COVID-19. The second, this therapy should not be used in patients with non-severe COVID-19, because it may increase the risk of death.“In contrast, in patients with non-severe COVID-19, based on data from 1,535 patients in one study, systemic corticosteroids may increase the risk of 28-day mortality,” researchers wrote.Compared to other treatments for COVID-19, these types of steroids are generally low cost, easy to administer and readily available across the globe.“Dexamethasone and prednisolone are among the most commonly listed medicines in national essential medicines lists; listed by 95% of countries. Dexamethasone was first listed by WHO as an essential medicine in 1977, while prednisolone was listed 2 years later,” the WHO wrote. The WHO added that clinicians should exercise caution in use of corticosteroids in patients with diabetes or those who are immunocompromised and could become severely ill do to COVID-19. 1651

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC News faced questions Tuesday about its reluctance to air a sensitive story of alleged sexual misconduct after a leaked video emerged of reporter Amy Robach complaining about how her bosses handled an interview with a Jeffrey Epstein accuser. The conservative web site Project Veritas released video of Robach venting that "every day I get more and more pissed" that her 2015 interview with Virginia Giuffre never made the air. Robach made her remarks late in August while sitting in a Times Square studio with a microphone but not on the air.ABC said Tuesday that the interview didn't meet its standards because it lacked sufficient corroborating evidence. Robach, co-anchor of ABC's "20/20" newsmagazine, said the leaked video caught her "in a private moment of frustration."The episode was remindful of Ronan Farrow's accusations that NBC News discouraged his reporting on Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein's misconduct. Farrow then took his Pulitzer Prize-winning story to the New Yorker magazine.ABC sought to minimize the comparison, saying it has pursued and aired other stories about Epstein, the New York financier who died Aug. 10 while in police custody on sex trafficking charges.Project Veritas is known for its efforts embarrass mainstream media outlets, often sending undercover reporters to catch employees making statements that display an anti-conservative bent. But it needed no such help with the Robach video, which Project Veritas said came from an "ABC insider" it would not identify. The correspondent was visibly exasperated as she complained that "I tried for three years to get (the interview) on to no avail and now it's coming out and it's like these 'new revelations' and I freaking had all of it."Giuffre, whose maiden name is Roberts, alleged that as a teen, she was forced by Epstein to have sex with prominent men, including Prince Andrew. The prince and Epstein both denied the charges. In the video, Robach said she was told "who's Jeffrey Epstein? No one knows who that is. This is a stupid story."Robach also complained in the video that lawyer Alan Dershowitz and the British Royal Palace applied pressure to ABC not to air the interview with Giuffre. She suggested that the network feared that airing the interview would hurt its ability to get interviews with Prince William and Kate Middleton.ABC denied that outside pressure had anything to do with its decision."At the time, not all of our reporting met our standards to air, but we have never stopped investigating the story," ABC News said in a statement Tuesday.Giuffre first outlined her allegations against Epstein anonymously in a lawsuit filed in 2009, and she did her first on-the-record interviews about them with the Daily Mail in 2011. At the time of ABC's interview, Giuffre's lawyers were battling with Dershowitz, who was fighting back against her claim that he was among the men who had sex with her when she was a minor. While her allegations received widespread attention, some news organizations have treated elements of her story with caution because the list of prominent men she accused was long and her allegations difficult to independently confirm. The Associated Press doesn't generally identify people who say they're victims of sex assault, unless they come forward publicly as Giuffre has done.Robach said in her statement Tuesday that she had been referring in the video to what Giuffre had said in the interview, not what ABC News had verified through its own reporting. Corroborating evidence of the type the network sought could include interviews with people familiar with Giuffre's allegations or records that would verify she was at the places the alleged sex acts took place."The interview itself, while I was disappointed it didn't air, didn't meet our standards," Robach said Tuesday. "In the years since no one has ever told me or the team to stop reporting on Jeffrey Epstein, and we have continued to aggressively pursue this important story."ABC says it plans to air a two-hour documentary and six-part podcast on the Epstein case next year. It's still unclear whether Robach's Giuffre interview will be part of it. Now that it is four years old, it would likely need to be updated. 4238
