(KGTV) - A Chula Vista business specializing in hand-woven bags faced a logistics mess due to overtaxed delivery systems during the pandemic.Daisy Romero founded El Cholo's Bag back in 2008. They’re the kind of bag our grandmothers used to use for the market."Many like the fact the bag is pandemic friendly."You can wash them, Lysol it, wipe it down with a Clorox wipe, it’s easy," she said.But, her small business hit a big shipping problem."At one point I just had dozens of lost packages, throughout the system and it didn’t matter if it was UPS or USPS, it didn’t matter. Everything was just so strained," says Romero. The shipping issue strained Romero's bottom line as well."It is a struggle, you know sometimes you’re in the negative because you had to refund three packages and you haven’t sold anything that day," she said solemnly.She learned from the challenges, insuring her business so the next time a package gets lost, she doesn't get burned.She's also working around the system, driving to San Diego customers."It’s easier to make sure your local customers get their product and it’s not going to be stuck in some distribution center even though it’s five miles away in Chula Vista," Romero said.As for her dreams, the pandemic put them on pause."My biggest goal for this year was to break into the European market and go to Paris and do all these things. 2020 was like, 'not today,'" she said.She hopes to bring her artisans' work to the world and share a bit of tradition. 1777

CINCINNATI -- Family members and friends said their final goodbyes to 16-year-old Kyle Plush at his funeral Monday.The teen died trapped inside his van at Seven Hills School last Tuesday, even after he pleaded with 911 operators to send help. Two Cincinnati police officers and a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy who searched near the school never found him. A Cincinnati City Council committee has a special meeting Tuesday afternoon to look into what happened.After Plush's death, the Cincinnati Police Department released a?computer-aided dispatch report,?Plush's calls and some dispatch traffic. It later released an internal review of the incident?after it was leaked to multiple news outlets.But the department has yet to explain exactly where its officers looked and what they did during their search for Plush. Nearly a week after the teen suffocated, numerous questions remain about what went wrong that day.The first 911 operatorStephane MaGee took the first 911 call from Plush. She couldn't communicate back and forth with him, because he said he could not hear her.MaGee indicated the caller was a female trapped in a van at the Seven Hills parking lot in "unknown trouble."Using latitude/longitude coordinates, she found Plush may be across the street from the school. She noted that location may be a thrift store parking lot in the dispatch report. Officers were dispatched to 5471 Red Bank Road, which is the parking lot across from the school where Plush was suffocating inside his Honda Odyssey. MaGee noted she used "Phase II" to find the location; "Phase II" is shorthand for a requirement, from the Federal Communications Commission, that wireless providers have to give 911 centers the latitude/longitude coordinates of cellphone calls.The latitude/longitude coordinates MaGee obtained were within feet of where Plush would be found dead later that night. Even though MaGee had almost the exact location of where Plush was found, a supervisor later wrote she should've used the school's name -- which would've sent officers to a less-exact location, at 5400 Red Bank.The officersRecords show Cincinnati Police Officers Edsel Osborn and Brian Brazile, riding double as Unit 2232, responded to the school to investigate Plush's first call. It's unclear if they ever came back on the radio to ask for clarification about the caller or vehicle.The officers noted they tried calling Plush back but didn't get an answer. Less than 11 minutes after arriving, they marked the assignment complete and were ready for a different assignment.Later that night, when Plush was found dead, another call went out for police to respond to Seven Hills School. Officers didn't yet know Plush was dead. Brazile and Osborn's unit, 2232, came on the radio to say they'd been there earlier in the day and found nothing."I think somebody's playing pranks. It was something about they were locked in a vehicle across from the school, we never found anything. But we'll respond and see what else we can find," one of them said in the radio transmission that night.That's what we know about the two Cincinnati police officers' actions. WCPO has requested numerous records, which have not yet been provided.Chief Eliot Isaac has not gone into detail about what the officers did at the school that afternoon. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay couple said they were able to pay off their mortgage by renting out their home on the weekends.“We paid off our house, and now we weekend on a boat. It’s incredible,” said Chris Morrow.Stepping into Chris Morrow’s backyard is like crossing a plane into an outdoor oasis. It's filled with toys, games, and multiple spots where you can pull up a chair and relax."You want to use every space of your backyard,” Morrow said.But having a dream backyard and a home in Chula Vista was once just a dream."Being a journalist, you don’t make a lot of money these days -- you follow your heart. Living in San Diego County, which is a resort town, you need to be creative,” Morrow said.Morrow is a CNN iReporter and a food and travel writer. About five years ago, before the housing market got hot, she and her husband leveraged their money and bought the Chula Vista home."I never even thought about Chula Vista, but it's a beautiful area,” she said. “I have a 1947 craftsman home, natural wood floors, beautiful plaster walls. There's a lot of uniqueness to it.”Morrow’s turned that charm into a small business: an Airbnb rental. It’s a move that drastically changed her life."Everybody wants to live that American dream, and we're doing it because we're renting this house out for Airbnb,” she said.Here's how they did it. Morrow said a few years into homeownership, she tried renting out just one of their rooms. It was a good first step, but it didn't bring in any extra cash. Morrow said they ended up spending most of the money on the guest they were hosting."I wasn't able to use that money for anything else, just entertaining,” she said.They decided to up the ante. Instead of renting out one room, Morrow said they rented out the entire house. It meant adding beds, furniture and moving into a hotel on the weekends."The first time we decided to rent the house we were so nervous,” Morrow said. “We must have driven by the house at least six times just to make sure they weren't having a huge party that you hear about in those movies."The decision was a hit. Now their rental can host up 16 people. The going rate is anywhere from 0 to ,800 a night. They’re regularly hosting large groups and have even done a wedding in the backyard. Most weekends are booked solid."We've paid this house off, and we were able to buy a boat, we're able to pay for the gas for the boat,” Morrow said.The extra income means they don't have to stay at a hotel on the weekends. Instead, they purchased a two-cabin, one-bath, 41-foot sport fisher boat. The purchase made possible by renting out her house."We’re living the dream,” she said. “We're staying here (the boat) on the weekends, and we're loving it.”In a resort town, one of the more expensive places in the country, Morrow is not only surviving, but she's also thriving. All it took was a little ingenuity and trust in people."We are creatively living the American dream,” she said.Tips for being a successful 5-star rental takes more than just renting out your house to be successful. (KGTV) - Concerned citizens made their voices heard Monday night at a Sweetwater Union High School District board meeting in which the district’s financial problems are discussed.Many residents in the South Bay have expressed outrage over the district’s myriad fiscal issues, pointing specifically at the financial mismanagement of salaries and a disproportionate ratio of administrators to teachers.Data provided by public pay and pension database Transparent California, showed 1,796 Sweetwater district employees making 0,000 and above in 2017 salaries. Many of those making six figures are administrators and other non-teaching employees.In 2017, the district paid out 9.97 million in salaries and benefits to its employees. Two similarly sized school districts in California paid out nearly 20% less than SUHSD in total pay and benefits, between 5 and 3 million, according to the data. SUHSD was shown to have 2,000 more employees than the other two district; 6,391 compared to about 4,500 for the other districts.SUHSD paid over .3 million in overtime to about 841 district employees during the year. District officials previously said its 2018-2019 school year budget shortfall was due to expenses from staff raises, including costs of substitute teachers and an unexpected million expense for utilities.Even with a revised budget, it was later reported in an independent audit that Sweetwater’s budget problems were worse than what was originally predicted due to the following “significant factors”:“Internal borrowings that reflect the significant cash flow shortages in the General Fund”“Unsustainable salary, benefits, and pension increases that create significant deficit spending”“Declining local enrollment of students”The district has been borrowing money faster than it can pay back, taking money from local development taxes, also known as Mello-Roos fees, according to a Dec. 3 report from The Voice of San Diego. This fiscal year alone, the district will borrow million -- in addition to the million they already owe.At an October 8 board meeting, SUHSD staff offered suggestions to help reduce the debt such as energy cost savings, freezing unfilled positions, and a reduction in the work year for all management. In an email sent to families following that Oct. 8 meeting, at least two schools announced they would be cutting after school programs and their 2019 summer school sessions.More recently, the district announced it would allow nearly 300 employees to retire early in an effort to balance the budget. The school board also voted to cut 34 temporary teaching positions in the district's adult education program.Moving forward, auditors recommended the district evaluate the procedures in which it reviews its own finances. The audit goes on to suggest those assigned with monitoring finances “should have a clear understanding of accruals and the journal entries required to account for them properly.”Auditors also urged Sweetwater to “always perform timely bank reconciliations to ensure that all activities have been properly accounted for and that there are no errors posted.”Sweetwater officials acknowledged not having “tight internal controls or warning systems in place” in balancing its budget. 4103

(KGTV) - A woman who was struck by a vehicle in Chula Vista Thursday night died of her injuries in the hospital, according to Chula Vista Police.Dispatchers received several 911 calls about the crash at Fourth Ave and C Street at 9:15 p.m. The location is near a CVS pharmacy and Jack in the Box.Officers said they found the 57-year-old victim in the intersection with serious injuries. She was taken to UCSD Hospital for treatment but later died.An investigation showed that the woman had entered the crosswalk on a red light, police said.Chula Vista Police are asking anyone with information to call 619-691-5151. 643
