SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday that it received .5 million in federal funding to support housing vouchers to unsheltered military veterans.The county will use the ,520,346 grant to issue 175 housing vouchers to veterans throughout the county. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County residents can ride to their polling places for free on Election Day, with county public transportation agencies announcing that Nov. 3 will be a "Free Ride Day."The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District will honor free rides Nov. 3 on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services, including buses, the Trolley, SPRINTER, and COASTER.Officials say the free rides will be instrumental in helping voters this year, with fewer polling places available than in prior elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic."Free Ride Day this year has a different purpose than in past years," said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who is also the MTS Board chair. "We are holding it on one of the most important days for our country -- Election Day. We want San Diego residents to have every opportunity to participate in our democracy. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied.The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday.It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Regal Cinemas might be closing all 543 of its theaters in the United States as early as this week due to continued revenue losses from the coronavirus pandemic.``We can confirm we are considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and US cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached. Once a decision has been made we will update all staff and customers as soon as we can,'' the theater chain's parent company Cineworld tweeted on Sunday.A report in Variety the previous day, which cited an unidentified source, said the company would be closing its theatres in the United States and the United Kingdom as early as this week.Regal is the second-largest theater chain in the United States after AMC.The chain has eight locations in San Diego County.
