SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman and a man were attacked by a man with a knife in the East Village area of San Diego and the suspect was at large this morning.The 32-year-old woman was sitting near a Jack in the Box restaurant in the 1100 block of C Street, near Park Boulevard, at 10:40 p.m. Friday when a man walked up to her and, without saying anything, cut the left side of her face with a knife and ran away northbound on Park Boulevard, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening wounds.About a block away, the suspect approached a 62-year-old man and pressed a knife against the left side of the man's neck, then ran away in an unknown direction. The man suffered scratches to his neck, but did not go to a hospital, Heims said.A detailed description of the suspect was not immediately available. 892

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A long-planned but controversial religious tourism and conference center project in Mission Valley received final approval today from the San Diego City Council.Construction of the 1 million Legacy International Project will be funded by televangelist Morris Cerullo.Slated for the 18-acre site of the former Mission Valley Resort, the project encompasses five buildings, including a new 127-room hotel and restaurant. It will also have a replica of Jerusalem's Wailing Wall and a domed theater featuring biblical films.At a hearing two weeks ago, opponents expressed concerns over the potential for increased traffic in an already congested area.Cerullo's organization plans to add one lane in each direction on Hotel Circle South. Under a permit condition, they plan to maintain a count of vehicles that enter the facility's driveway over the first three years.On its second reading, the item was passed without comment on a 7-2 vote, with Georgette Gomez and Chris Ward dissenting.The council also approved an amendment to council policy that will move up the timeline for receiving ballot submissions from the public.The change does not affect citizens initiatives or referendums that go through the signature collection process.According to City Clerk Elizabeth Maland, the amendment will provide a little more clarity to the public about the process. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An annual reading program by United Way of San Diego County helped nearly 500 students in the City Heights neighborhood improve their literacy skills, the nonprofit announced today.The "Readers in the Heights" summer reading initiative included 479 students from elementary schools in the City Heights area, a sharp increase from the program's 40 participants just two years ago. The program is intended to combat "summer slide," when students lose literacy gains they made during the school year. According to United Way, 86 percent of students assessed at the beginning and end of the program maintained or improved their reading comprehension."We use proven assessment tools to measure impact and they show that these literacy practices have made significant progress in student reading," United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki said. "These practices help close learning gaps and open new worlds by creating happy, excited and confident readers."United Way partnered with the San Diego Unified School District, the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Police Department, PrimeTime SAY San Diego and Words Alive to produce the program.Members of the literacy group Words Alive trained members of the program's staff on how to implement evidence-based reading practices across the program's seven sites, including four elementary schools in and around City Heights. The students totaled nearly 10,000 hours of literacy learning during the 20-day program and received a total of 900 free books."Research shows that children who don't have access to books, camps or enrichment programs during the summer recess can lose more than two months of reading skills and can fall behind almost three months in their learning," said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Each year, the Readers in the Heights literacy initiative works to increase summer learning opportunities, and with the help of partners and volunteers, we are able to make a huge impact over four weeks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a BNSF freight train at the Old Town Transit Station in San Diego, authorities said this morning.Officers responded to the station, in the 4000 block of Taylor Street near Congress Street, at 9:25 p.m. Friday and found the victim dead at the scene, according to Deputy Brian Abraham of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The age, gender and name of the victim were not disclosed.Anyone with information about this incident was asked to call the sheriff's department at 858-565-5200. 553
