SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Broadway San Diego lifted the curtain on its upcoming season Thursday, revealing Tony Award-winning productions and the return of small-stage favorites.Grammy and Tony Award-winning "The Band's Visit" starts the season with a six-night run beginning Sept. 8, followed by the pre-Broadway run of "1779," Tony Award-winners "Hadestown" in January 2021 and "The Cher Show" in March 2021.Movie-turned-Broadway productions "Tootsie" and "Pretty Woman: The Musical" will also arrive to San Diego's stage in May 2021 and June 2021, respectively. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crews battled flames from two house fires that sprang up overnight in San Diego.The first fire was reported in City Heights at about 3 a.m. Crews responded to a home in the 4000 block of 42nd Street engulfed in flames.One person made it out of the home safely and surrounding neighbors were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Neighbors say the homeowner was not inside when the fire broke out. It took about 30 minutes to knock the fire down and no injuries were reported.San Diego Fire Department said Metro Arson Strike Team determined the fire was intentionally set. The blaze caused an estimated 0,000 in total damages.No arrests have been made.Fire crews also doused a fire in Encanto at an abandoned home near 66th St. and Madera St. The home's doors and windows were boarded up and transients frequented the property, according to fire crews.No injuries were reported in that fire as well. 955

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Bombarded with long lines and time delays, the state is planning to replace the Department of Motor Vehicles facility in Hillcrest with a larger facility. The state would tear down the current 14,319 square-foot DMV at 3960 Normal Street, and replace it with a one-story 18,540 square-foot building. The new DMV would accommodate the 931 customers that use it daily, with 141 parking spaces. It would cost .7 million. "The existing DMV Normal Street field office is not sized appropriately to accommodate the existing staffing and service demand levels needed at this location," the DMV said in an environmental notice. But the threat of shorter wait times is not being met with enthusiasm from some Hillcrest residents.Mat Wahlstrom, a member of the Uptown Planning Group, sees the project as a missed opportunity. He pointed to a now-scrapped plan to add a mixed-use housing and retail project, plus a park. It would have a new, larger DMV on the south end the 2.5-acre site."This wouldn't be a deadzone every evening, which is what it's become," Wahlstrom said. "It was supposed to have been a dual use site."Christina Valdivia, a DMV spokeswoman, says the mixed-use plan didn't work because it doesn't conform with its vehicle-centric business model.Meanwhile, the Hillcrest Farmers Market is raising issue with the DMV's plan to add a 7-foot-tall wrought iron fence around the property. The market uses the DMV lots for parking and some of its vendors."It would really create this sort of fortress DMV that we are hostile to," said Ben Nichols, who heads the Hillcrest Business Association.Valdivia says the DMV is installing fences at all of its new and replacement buildings to protect against vandalism, theft, damage, and even human waste. Nichols said it would just push those problems onto the public sidewalk.Now, two state legislators, Sen. Toni Atkins, and Asm. Todd Gloria, are getting involved with the project. The plan is currently under environmental review. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County officials created a Dia de los Muertos altar to honor the lives of 891 San Diegans who died from the coronavirus, and put a face and heart into the fight.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez championed the altar as a way to send a message."We wanted to honor those families and honor those lives lived and acknowledge the tremendous impact it's had, but also pay particular tribute to the impact that covid has had on the Latino community," Fletcher said.Saying more than half of those who died in the county are Latinos. This is extremely disproportionate considering only 30% of the population is Hispanic, according to the 2019 Census."When we start looking at the actual human toll and our relatives who have moved on now as a result of this virus it becomes more real and reminds us why it's so important to stay so vigilant," Gonzalez said.Vigilance is what Treasure Felder said would have saved her mom Ronda."She was our angel on earth and is now our angel in heaven, that's how we like to refer to her," said Felder. Felder says her mom was a social worker with the county, caring for foster youth and a strong woman in her 60s."She was never really ill, in the hospital, or hurt. Even if she had a little pain she'd always push through. So to see her in a place where she could barely stand up and also having to be put in a chemically induced coma was something that none of us prepared for." she said.She said she walked into her mother's room on July 4th and found she couldn't stand and was breathing heavily. She called an ambulance, even though her mother didn't want to go to the hospital, and never saw her again.Felder said her mother always had her hand out to help others and is so incredibly proud of how her mother led her life. She hopes sharing her story of pain and emptiness, now that her mother is gone, will stir others to take steps like wearing a mask and social distancing to stop the spread of the coronavirus.The altar will stay up through Tuesday morning. 2048
