LHASA, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has urged greater efforts to implement democratic management in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.Concerted and solid efforts must be paid to implement democratic management in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, said the official, Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee.Du, also vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks during a conference on democratic management of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries which was held in Xigaze of Tibet Autonomous Region from Aug. 14 to 15.Competent Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns who are politically reliable, extraordinarily learned and widely respected should be selected to monastery management committees through thorough democratic consultation, said he,In implementing monastery democratic management, the lawful rights of monasteries, orderly religious activities of monks and nuns, and normal religious practice of believers must be ensured, he added.The 11th Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, who is also vice president of the Buddhist Association of China, sent a congratulatory letter to the conference.The conference was attended by some 150 people from Tibetan Buddhist circles and relative governmental organizations.

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education on Friday said that Taiwan's new amended laws would be beneficial to the cross-Strait educational exchanges.On Thursday, the Taiwan regional legislature adopted amendments to three laws, which would allow local colleges to accept students from the Chinese mainland and recognize degrees from mainland schools, except for medical schools.The ministry said in a statement that Taiwan should not put in place discriminatory policies that might harm mainland students."We hope related authorities in Taiwan could make good plans, offering attractive colleges and majors for, and take effective measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of mainland students," said the statement.Under the amended laws, mainland students can not apply for schools and colleges related to the island's security nor attend the exams of civil servants and professionals such as doctors and lawyers.Taiwan's education department said in a statement that it would issue two detailed regulations in line with the amendments in September. The first group of postgraduate students are expected to arrive next March and the first college students can enroll next September.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health has said it will draw upon its experience from the H1N1 flu control to ensure prevention of the general flu, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced plans for the post-pandemic period."Based on the experience from A/H1N1 prevention and control, we will revise emergency plans and will continue flu prevention efforts in a bid to ensure people's health," said a statement released late Tuesday by the ministry.Figures from the ministry show that the weekly new A/H1N1 cases have remained below 30 since mid-April. Further, no deaths have been reported for 12 consecutive weeks.While announcing the coming of the post-pandemic period, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan warned that the A/H1N1 virus will continue to spread as a seasonal flu for some years.Chan urged health authorities to maintain alert for the virus.So far, about 800 deaths from A/H1N1 influenza had been reported in China, Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier.More than 100 million Chinese have been vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu as of May 14.The A/H1N1 virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. WUHAN/XI'AN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in two Chinese provinces traversed by the Hanjiang River, the largest branch of the swollen Yangtze River, issued fresh flood warnings Friday.The Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in central Hubei Province said areas along the Hanjiang River will face severe floods.Pressure is building at the Danjiangkou reservoir, which is already dealing with the worst flooding of the year so far.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 150.74 meters by Friday, about 1.74 meters above the warning line, and is expected to rise to 152 meters before the end of the month.Engineers at the reservoir more than doubled the flow rate of water from 1,920 cubic-meters per second to 5,000 cubic-meters per second.Along the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River in Shaanxi Province, floods and landslides had left at least 73 people dead and 121 missing as of Friday noon, the provincial government said.About 213,000 residents from 24 counties and districts in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in southern Shaanxi have been evacuated. More than 60,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.A new round of rainstorms began to pound the region Thursday. Between 20 to 80 millimeters of rain has fallen, raising water levels in the Hanjiang River.Authorities in Shaanxi have ordered disaster relief agencies and government departments evacuate flood-threatened residents as soon as possible.Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of 9:00 a.m. Friday.

HONG KONG, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A helicopter departing for Macao made an emergency landing in waters at Hong Kong Victoria Harbor on Saturday. All of 13 people on board were safely rescued.At around 12:04 noon (GMT 4:04), the Sky Shuttle type AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, flight no. EMU2, made an emergency landing at sea about 500 meters northwest of Shun Tak Center at Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island shortly after taking off."The pilot heard a loud bang at the back and decided to land on the waters," Acting Director General of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) Leung Yu-keung said at a press briefing on Saturday that they will send some of the fittings broken down from the wreckage to Italy, where the copter was manufactured, for investigation. The crashed helicopter is salvaged on the sea area between the Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsular, south China, July 3, 2010. The helicopter crashed on Saturday noon, and all 13 persons onboard have been rescued.CAD will invite the participation of the accident investigation authorities of Macao and Italy. Leung said a preliminary report will be released within a month.
