A Los Angeles County resident visited Disneyland last week while infectious with measles, health officials said late Tuesday, potentially exposing hundreds of other people to the highly contagious disease. The individual went to Starbucks at 3006 S. Spulveda Boulevard in West Los Angeles early on the morning on October 16 before going to Disneyland from 9.15 a.m. onwards, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in a statement."Anyone who may have been at these locations on these dates during these timeframes may be at risk of developing measles for up to 21 days after being exposed," the statement said.Measles can spread through coughing and sneezing and can live for up to two hours in the air where an infected person coughs or sneezes. As more details become available, the department said it would update information about exposure times and locations."For those who are not protected, measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe disease that initially causes fever, cough, red, watery eyes, and, finally, a rash," said Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis."Measles is spread by air and by direct contact even before you know have it. The MMR immunization is a very effective measure to protect yourself and to prevent the unintentional spread of this potentially serious infection to others."The department urged people concerned about exposure to monitor themselves for illness with fever and/or an unexplained rash from 7 days to 21 days after they may have come into contact with the virus. If symptoms develop, they should stay at home and call a health care provider immediately. It added that residents should contact and notify their health care provider as soon as possible about a potential exposure if they are pregnant, have an infant, a weakened immune system and/or are not vaccinated. In August, 1871

This cat has a weight problem. “She’s uncomfortable, she has to lay down,” said Brita Kiffney, the cat's vet at Northshore Veterinary Hospital. “She plays of five, ten minutes if you’re in a good spot and then she’s like, I gotta, I gotta lay down,” said Jason Collins, a vet tech at Northshore. She weighs almost twice as much as a healthy cat should. And it's made her famous. This is Cinderblock. And a few months ago she went viral for something a lot of humans can relate to - refusing to exercise. “I think it’s gone straight to her head. I mean, honestly, she demands like five times more brushing than she used to. It’s wild,” said Jason. He had no idea it would go viral. “I think my wife that night was like it’s got like 7,000 view already,” The video now has over 3.2 million views. A fat cat might be fun to cuddle, but the reality is being overweight is hard for animals. Brita Kiffney, Cinder's vet, knows that all too well. “It certainly leads to pain, contributes to arthritis, decreased lung capacity, promotes diabetes, some liver diseases, pancreatitis, inflammation throughout the body,” Kiffney said. It can lead to a lot of issues, just like it does for humans. “Upwards of 60% of cats and 56% of dogs are considered to be overweight or obese. So I would say that yeah, that’s becoming a bit of an issue,” said Andrea Clewley. She is in charge of training at Trupanion, a company that provides medical coverage for hundreds of thousands of pets across the country. She says weight gain can really sneak up on pet owners. “You may not notice the incremental increase in weight gain and so it may just be a really slow progression over time that you just don’t notice until all of a sudden you may look down one day and you’re like, holy cow, how did that happen?” said Clewley And just like humans, it’s easier to pack on the pounds than lose them. “It’s going to take her a year or more to reach her goal weight,” said Jan Province. She knows it's going to take a while. She works at the reception desk at Northshore Veterinary Hospital. Province and Cinderblock will be roommates once the feline is back down to her fighting weight. Until then, Province will have to read Cinderblock the fan mail she receives at the hospital. “Dear Cinder, we love you and we’re so proud of you. Keep up the good work. Lovingly, Findley Jack and his human Denise,” reads Province. This envelope came with in cash. The Social Media influencer also is being sponsored by Purina for a free year of weight loss cat food. And she also has her own line of merchandise you can find online. But it’s not all perks for Miss Block. She still has a long way to go on her weight loss journey. “If she started at 22, she’s now at about 20.8 lbs, which is great, she has lost some weight,” said Kiffney. But at the hospital, they want her down closer to 10lbs. If her weight loss is successful, she will have lost more than 50% of her body weight. To put it in human terms, it’s like going from 300 lbs down to 150. No easy feat. But Cinder will have to be successful if she wants a healthy life. 3122

A gender discrimination lawsuit filed by members of the US women's soccer team against the US Soccer Federation has been scheduled for trial starting May 5, a spokeswoman for the players said."We are pleased with the expeditious schedule that has been set by the court and we are eager to move forward this case," Molly Levinson, spokeswoman for the players, said Tuesday. "We very much look forward to the trial in May 2020 when the players will have their day in court."We have every confidence that these world champion athletes will get what they legally deserve -- nothing less than equal pay and working conditions."US Soccer declined to comment. The US Women's National Team's lawsuit was filed in March in US District Court in California, with 28 members of the team listed as plaintiffs. The suit alleges US Soccer's payment practices amount to federal discrimination by paying women less than men "for substantially equal work and by denying them at least equal playing, training, and travel conditions; equal promotion of their games; equal support and development for their games; and other terms and conditions of employment equal to the MNT."Mediation talks between US Soccer and the US women's soccer team broke down, Levinson said last week. The players had previously requested a November 2020 trial date, while US Soccer asked that the trial begin in December 2020.The argumentIn one hypothetical case cited in the lawsuit, if the women's and men's teams both won 20 straight games in a season, the women would make 38% what the men do.Last month, US Soccer said the reigning Women's World Cup champions earned more than the US Men's National Team, with US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro releasing an open letter on Twitter saying that from 2010 through 2018, the federation paid .1 million in salary and game bonuses to the women, compared with .4 million for the men. Those figures did not include benefits, such as health care, that the women receive. Included in the federation's numbers is that US Soccer pays USWNT contracted players a salary to play in the National Women's Soccer League, while the men are paid by their individual teams. The women's and men's compensation structures are different, as those each were collectively bargained. The figures were described as misleading and "utterly false" by Levinson in a July written statement.America's women have been far more successful than their male counterparts, winning four World Cups -- the most recent last month in France -- and four Olympic gold medals. The USMNT said its players, too, "were not impressed" by Cordeiro's letter. "The women's national team players deserve equal pay and are right to pursue a legal remedy from the courts or Congress," the men's team said.Sponsors have added to the pressure to resolve the equal pay fight, with deodorant brand Secret saying in July that it planned to contribute 9,000 to the USWNT players' association.Nike, US Soccer's biggest partner, has also said it's a strong advocate for pay equity. "Regarding gender equality, Nike has been an advocate for women and girls in the US and around the world," a spokesperson said.Minutes after the USWNT's World Cup win on July 7, Nike ran a 60-second ad celebrating the team's victory, centering on the concept that the USWNT's win is about more than winning a soccer title. However, Nike has been criticized for reducing athletes' pay during their pregnancies, a practice it said in May it would discontinue. It emerged this month that US Soccer had enlisted two lobbying firms, FBB Federal Relations and Vann Ness Feldman, to push back against claims of pay disparity after two Democratic senators introduced legislation that would require equal pay for men's and women's national teams. The move had left the team "stunned and disappointed," Levinson told CNN. 3854

A gunman is on the run after killing two people in a car on a Houston freeway as horrified motorists watched during the Thursday evening rush hour, authorities said.Police initially got a call of an accident at 5:55 p.m., but when they arrived seven minutes later, they found a shooting scene. The fatal incident started as a crash involving two cars headed eastbound on Interstate 10, Houston Police Assistant Chief Bobby Dobbins said Thursday evening at a news conference."One of the vehicles struck the other vehicle and spun it out ... similar to a pit maneuver," he said, according to video of the news conference tweeted by Houston Police.Gunman fired as the car rolled downhillTwo occupants of the vehicle that rammed the other car got out, Dobbins said. One had a weapon. The gunman, described by a witness as a Hispanic male, fired multiple rounds at the car that had been rammed, pursuing it as it rolled down a hill, he said.Police found narcotics in the car of the two victims, both middle-aged black men, Dobbins said without further identifying them."Road rage? An accident? Narcotics? We just don't know, yet so I won't speculate," he added. One witness, who had a pistol in his car, fired several rounds when he saw the shooter turn toward him, Dobbins said. It's unclear whether the first gunman was struck by a bullet. He ran back up the hill, got into his car and sped away, Dobbins said."We don't have a good description of the (shooter's) vehicle," he said. "We believe it was a sedan, but we cannot tell you the model yet."Journalist describes an 'unreal scene'Daniel Gotera, a journalist for local station KHOU, heard the gunshots and saw people fleeing, he said."Unreal scene just witnessed on I-10 in Houston," he tweeted. "A guy gets out of his car with gun just shooting in the middle of freeway. Unbelievable."Witnesses provided CPR to the car's occupants until authorities arrived. Houston police urge anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. That part of the freeway was still closed midmorning Friday for investigation. 2072
