CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A motorcyclist from San Marcos died Sunday after crashing into a truck in Carlsbad.According to Carlsbad police, the 19-year-old motorcyclist was riding along the 4600 block of Carlsbad Boulevard when he collided with a Toyota Tundra around 4:35 p.m.Emergency responders arrived and transported the motorcyclist to the hospital but he was pronounced dead on the way.The driver of the Toyota, a 38-year-old man from Grand Terrace, stopped on the scene.Investigators have not said what caused the collision. Chanel White has missed going to karaoke bars, but when it comes to being in quarantine, she’s used to it.“Life hasn’t been too different from what it normally was for me,” Chanel White said.In 2011, White was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis, an auto-immune disease.“Basically my body just sees myself, my tissue, my organs as something foreign and something that should be attacked,” White said.She gets nutrients through a feeding tube and takes a lot of different medications. She’s also considered high risk of contracting COVID-19.“Pneumonia is basically the number one cause of death for people with my condition.”Based on a report by Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, White should be among those who get the novel coronavirus vaccine as soon as it’s available.“Ethics is the essence of this,” Dr. Eric Toner said.Dr. Toner is a Senior Scholar with Johns Hopkins. Who gets the vaccine first will ultimately be up to the Department of Health and Human Services, but Dr. Toner says the report is meant to offer an ethical framework to help prioritize who gets the vaccine and when.“First of all it’d be health care workers who are taking care of COVID-19 patients. That seems pretty straight forward and non-controversial,” Dr. Toner said.Also in the first tier would be people who are essential to the pandemic response – like those doing the vaccinating, people on the front lines of public health and people working in nursing homes.That first tier would also include the men and women who have helped maintain some normalcy during the pandemic.“Think of front-line transportation workers like bus drivers, think about people working grocery stores, people who work in food production, people who keep the lights on and the water running,” Dr. Toner said.White would be in tier one, but her medical situation is quite complicated.“I right now can’t get vaccines,” White said.She says the treatment she’s receiving heavily reduces her immune response so her body doesn’t attack itself. So depending on the type of vaccine, she would either develop COVID-19, or the vaccine wouldn’t do anything for her.“It’s a weird circumstance because I don’t think the world thinks a lot about people like us. They just think ‘oh the sick people are especially going to need this,’” White said.Dr. Toner says there is an alternative solution.“Vaccinate everyone around them. So vaccinate their families, their caregivers,” Dr. Toner said.“Clearly herd immunity can save an immeasurable number of lives. And so really for someone like me that really is my best shot,” White said.Getting enough people who have an immune response to the vaccine will depend on its effectiveness.“We are ensuring that the vaccine is safe and we’re ensuring that the vaccine is effective. And we will try to get it out as fast as we can, of course, but we won’t cut any corners,” Dr. Toner said.For now, White is choosing to focus on the positive."Hopefully the world will come out better because of this and empathic to their fellow man. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - California Pacific Airlines has canceled all of its January flights in and out of Carlsbad’s Palomar-McClellan Airport. The announcement came after the small airline had already canceled flights from December 21 through the end of the year. CPA launched in November with direct flights to Reno, Las Vegas, San Jose and Pheonix. It had been almost a decade in the making for founder Ted Vallas, who finally opened CPA after taking over a small airline with a fleet of four aging jets. But by December, the problems began. Two of the planes were taken out for repairs, creating several days of canceled flights. Operations resumed for about a week, but a few days before Christmas the cancellations began again causing passengers to scramble to find alternate routes. On Yelp, one reviewer wrote “They canceled my flight last night, and rebooked me to this morning. Then they canceled my flight this morning... on Christmas Eve!! Had to ditch this airline completely and booked a last minute Southwest flight.” Founder Ted Vallas told 10News that all canceled flights will be refunded. He said maintenance issues were still a lingering problem, but they ran into another issue as the holidays approached - a lack of pilots. Vallas said they recently let two of their pilots go. That coincided with two other crews leaving for higher paying seasonal jobs at major airlines. Without enough planes or pilots for all of their scheduled flights, they decided to cancel them across the board at Palomar-McClellan. Vallas told 10News, “Being a scheduled airline and dedicated to this community the North County, it would be better to notify people in advance that we have this pilot problem.” He said they are currently training more pilots and in the process of leasing new planes, but those won’t be available until at least February. Vallas says another one of their planes will be heading in for maintenance during their 30-day shutdown. Palomar-McClellan airport has had a history of failed airline ventures. The most recent was Cal Jet, which folded after less than a year of operations. But big changes are coming. Back in October, the county Board of Supervisors approved a plan to extend the runway, which could help make a business model for an airline more viable. For now, CPA continues to operate out of several other airports. Vallas vows to resume operations out of Carlsbad as soon as possible, but has not yet set a hard date. 2469

(AP) — A Colorado woman suspected of trying to sell three human fetuses from the 1920s and a fetal skeleton online has been indicted in California on charges of violating a U.S. law prohibiting the transfer of human fetal tissue.Emily Suzanne Cain, 38, pleaded not guilty to charges Tuesday, KUSA-TV reported .The case has been delayed until Nov. 20 in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, according to court records.The fetuses are believed to be from stillborn infants from the 1920s, court records said.Cain attempted in October 2018 to mail a package from Canon City in central Colorado to an address in the United Kingdom, according to a criminal complaint.The package, labeled "school teaching aids and T-shirts," caught the attention of U.S. Postal Service workers who noticed there was no signature on a customs form certifying the package did not contain dangerous contents, authorities said in the complaint.An X-ray of the package revealed a human-like shape, according to U.S. customs agents at the San Francisco International Airport cited in the complaint.Cain posted on Facebook that she acquired the fetuses from a university lab collection and was selling them for ,000, the complaint said.The specimens were traced to Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, the complaint said.University policy calls for specimens that are no longer needed to be cremated and not sold, university officials told investigators.
