WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has agreed to review a court decision that the NCAA has said blurred “the line between student-athletes and professionals.” A lower court ruling removed caps on education-related money that certain football and basketball players can receive. The case will be argued before the Supreme Court in 2021 with a decision expected before the end of June. The NCAA contends that antitrust law allows its member schools to impose certain restrictions, like on athlete compensation, in an effort to promote competitive equity and have a product for dans that is distinct from professional sports, according to USA Today. The NCAA claims a change to this arrangement would have larger implications on professional level sports leagues. An appeals court panel in May upheld a lower court ruling barring the NCAA from capping education-related compensation and benefits for student-athletes in Division I football and basketball programs. Such benefits could include cash payments for academic performance. The lower court's ruling said the NCAA could still set limits on compensation not connected to education. The association has revealed proposed rule changes that would allow athletes to make money from their names, images and likeness. Those proposed changes are set to be voted on in January. VISTA (KNSD) - A Carlsbad man who allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl and raped a woman he met online was charged Wednesday with 17 felony counts.Michael Fangman, 47, faces between 20 and 25 years in state prison if convicted of charges involving the minor, identified only as Jane Doe 1, and the woman, identified only as Jane Doe 2.Fangman was arrested shortly before 8:25 a.m. last Friday at his home, Carlsbad police Sgt. Reid Shipley said.Carlsbad police have been investigating since March when they received the first report of sexual assault. The 16-year-old girl contacted police on March 18 and alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by Fangman, who she had met online, Shipley said.The criminal complaint includes allegations that between March 11 and March 16, Jane Doe 1 was sexually assaulted and was given heroin by Fangman during that timeframe. He faces 14 counts related to Jane Doe 1, as well as three pertaining to Jane Doe 2, including forcible rape.According to the deputy district attorney, Benjamin Barlow, all of the alleged acts took place in Carlsbad in the month of March of this year. The judge ordered a no contact order with Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. (KGTV) — A mom-and-pop manufacturer in Vista got a ,648 tariff bill for importing LCD screens from China.The bill came amid escalating trade tensions with China.RJM Music makes MIDI Foot Controllers that some of the world's most famous bands have used, including Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Brad Paisely, Muse and Fall Out Boy. The company, with three employees, builds its devices in San Diego County. Its main product utilizes 23 LCD screens, a type that co-owner Sheri Minelli says is only available from China. "We're not Apple," said Minelli, who owns the business with her husband Ron. "We don't get to choose and make something that fits exactly. We have to take what's in the marketplace."On Aug. 22, the Minellis got a statement from the Department of Homeland Security billing them ,642 in tariffs. WASHINGTON (AP) — A voter initiative led by Michelle Obama is partnering with a similar group founded by NBA star LeBron James and other prominent Black athletes and entertainers to sponsor events in major U.S. cities starting next week to generate excitement about voting early for the Nov. 3 election.Mrs. Obama’s When We All Vote and James’ More Than A Vote are teaming to provide information, transportation, food, music, personal protective equipment and other support at early voting sites around the country Oct. 18-31.“Millions of Americans have already cast their ballot and with only 21 days until Election Day. Making your plan to vote early is critical,” Mrs. Obama said Tuesday in a statement to The Associated Press. “It’s now up to us to do everything in our power to get our friends and family ready to vote early and safely together. We can’t leave anyone behind.”The former first lady is also launching a challenge to encourage more people to vote before Nov. 3. Her group also announced more than million in grants and supplies to local partner organizations to host their own activities.In-person events are planned for Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Detroit; Los Angeles; Milwaukee; Orlando, Florida; and Philadelphia.
