Thursday marks the third anniversary of a mass shooting that left 58 people dead and more than 800 people injured.On Oct. 1, 2017, a gunman in his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay fired into a country music festival across the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and injuring 411 others. A total of 867 injuries were reported at the scene.The city will mark the anniversary with a sunrise memorial. But Johnson found a way to stay in his hometown.He went from coal to coding."Going on four years later, we're still hanging in here," says Johnson, who learned coding with several other former coal workers.Johnson's story isn't unique. It seems like everywhere you go in Pikeville, people are finding ways to survive, outside of the coal.About 21 percent of mining jobs have been eliminated statewide since 2016, forcing people to explore other industries.After nine years working in the mines, resident Harvey Maynard had to look for a new career after being laid off 10 months ago. His skills brought him to baking!"Right now, it's baking donuts!” says Maynard. “Which is a huge change.”Maynard doesn’t just bake—he even decorates, too."Even as a kid I loved to draw, paint, and color,” says Maynard. “I was always very artistic."New jobs are even moving to the small eastern Kentucky city to help. A new distillery opened one month ago; the owners wanted to build there, specifically to help hire coal miners who were out of work.It was a blessing for people like Michael Preston, who after 16 years of working in the coal industry, decided to go back to school. There is a nationwide voluntary recall of almost 19,000 bottles of hand sanitizer over concerns the mixture contains methanol.The Food and Drug Administration announced Monday the company ITECH361 is recalling their All Clean Hand Sanitizer, Moisturizer and Disinfectant sold in one liter bottles. The 18,940 recalled bottles have UPC Code 628055370130.According to the FDA, substantial exposure to methanol (wood alcohol) can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, and more serious conditions including death. There are no reports at this time of anyone getting sick from the recalled sanitizer.This may sound familiar. Last month, the FDA warned people about sanitizer from the manufacturer Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico Because of possible methanol concerns.The ITECH361 product was distributed around the country to distributors and retailers.
