Sales of existing homes in the country broke new records, spurred by ultra-low mortgage rates and after a three-month slump earlier this year during coronavirus pandemic lock downs.Home buyers snapped up a dwindling supply of houses in July, leading to a 24.7 percent increase in the number of homes sold over the previous month. The July 2020 surge in purchases reported Friday by the National Association of Realtors marked the second straight month of accelerating sales. June had reached its own high mark, with a more than 20 percent increase in sales over May.Existing homes are defined as single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops.With July’s increase, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.86 million, purchases are now up 8.7% from a year ago. In July 2019, there were 5.39 million sales.“The housing market is well past the recovery phase and is now booming with higher home sales compared to the pre-pandemic days,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist. “With the sizable shift in remote work, current homeowners are looking for larger homes and this will lead to a secondary level of demand even into 2021.”Total housing inventory at the end of July totaled 1.5 million units, a year ago there were 1.9 million available units.“More homes need to be built,” Yun said in a statement on NAR’s website.Properties are staying on the market for an average of 22 days. This is down from 24 days in June, and 29 days in July 2019.Individual investors or second-home buyers, who account for many cash sales, purchased 15% of homes in July, up from both 9% in June 2020 and from 11% in July 2019.The percentage of first-time home buyers was slightly down in July. 1695

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — California’s Senate has approved a measure to increase the scrutiny of hunting licenses used in gun sales, prompted by last year’s fatal shooting at a Poway synagogue. Senate Bill 914, introduced by Democratic Sen. Anthony Portantino, would require gun stores and the state Department of Justice to both check the validity of hunting licenses during a waiting period after gun buyers purchase a weapon and before they pick it up. The bill will now head to the state Assembly.SB 914 comes after a 10News investigation uncovered that the 19-year-old shooting suspect bought the gun used in the attack at a shop in San Diego using an invalid hunting license. 10NEWS INVESTIGATIONS ON POWAY SHOOTING:New bill aims to correct error that allowed Poway suspect to buy gunQuestions about how the synagogue shooting suspect got the gunProcess to get a hunting license in CaliforniaThe suspect, 19 at the time of the shooting, used that invalid hunting license to claim an exemption to a state law that raised the minimum purchase age to 21.California's age limit law, a bill Portantino authored in 2018, kept the minimum purchase age at 18 for military, law enforcement, and those with valid state-issued hunting licenses."The system should have been better, and that's what we're coming to grips with," Portantino said in an interview with 10News reporter Jon Horn. "How do we make it better, so these things have protections so that it doesn't happen again?"The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1535

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — South Salt Lake Police officers pitched in to replace a woman's American flag after they say she used it to fight off a home intruder on Monday.According to the department, 42-year-old Justin Scott Smith attempted to break into the woman's home shortly before 9 a.m.Police say when the suspect entered the front yard through the gate and assaulted multiple people, the woman grabbed the flag pole with the flag attached to defend herself and her family members. They say she hit the suspect multiple times, breaking the pole in the process, and the victims retreated into the home.Smith kicked the door in and continued to assault everyone inside, police say, before officers arrived and took him into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of assault, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, and criminal mischief. After the incident, police say the woman was worried about desecrating the flag because the pole had broken and the flag had hit the ground, so officers took up a collection to replace it. SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered Monday afternoon in a small town south of Portland for a pro-President Donald Trump vehicle rally. It comes just over a week after a member of a far-right group was fatally shot after a Trump caravan went through downtown Portland. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported vehicles waving flags for Trump, the QAnon conspiracy theory, and in support of police gathered at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. The rally's organizers said they did not plan to enter Multnomah County, where Portland is located. Oregon City is about 20 miles south of Portland. 614
